Brauhaus Faust – a Brewery with History Brauhaus Faust – A Brewery with History Brauhaus Faust was founded in Miltenberg in 1654 by Kilian Francois Mathieu Servantaine. At that time it still carried the name Löwenbrauerei. Today, the brewery, which is located in the historic Schwarzviertel, is the oldest in the Rhine-Main region, and it is already in its fourth generation of ownership by the Faust family. „The best quality beer and a great taste for the region“ is the philosophy that guides this regional family brewery. The brewery‘s long-standing customer and supplier relationships, some of which have lasted more than 100 years, and the loyalty of many longtime employees speak for themselves. Our brewery is a founding member of the Bavarian Brauerbund e.V., and it goes without saying that we brew according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Meanwhile, the designation „Bayerisches Bier“ has even been recognized as a protected geographical indication by the EU. This is a success for all those who produce and cherish the traditional local specialties. Churfranken – A Region with a Heart w We are proud and happy to be able to call the charming Churfranken and Miltenberg region, the pearl of the Main River, our home. That we are heartily involved in our region in a variety of ways is self-evident. The Brauhaus Faust sees itself as a living part of the region‘s commitment to Franconian-Bavarian beer and culture, and it is one of the tourist destinations of the region. Regionalism is for us both a guarantee of quality and sustainability as well as a declaration of the love that we have for our homeland. For example, we prefer to invest in the malting barley of the farmers of Lower Franconia rather than goods on the stock exchange. Moreover, we believe that appreciation for regional tastes is of great importance. We consciously distance ourselves from national mainstream beers, which must tailor their offerings so that they achieve the widest possible acceptance. That we nevertheless – or perhaps because of our philosophy – were one of the few breweries in many years to record stable national growth means a lot to us. Unique Quality and Taste For more than 360 years, the Brauhaus Faust has been based in Miltenberg. It goes almost without saying that our philosophy is to provide the best beer quality and a great taste for the region. Sustainability forms part of our under- standing of quality. We have already received the Bavarian Environmental Medal, the Environmental Award of the Miltenberg District, and the Climate Protection Award of the Bund Naturschutz in Bayern e.V. in recognition of our successful environmental management efforts. High quality standards imbue the thoughts and actions of Brauhaus Faust. It is therefore not at all surprising that the beer enjoys such great popularity in its homeland. Faust‘s beer specialties and delicacies are brewed with lots of love, expertise, and the best regional ingredients. It is a difference that you can taste. Our beer is openly fermented according to an ancient tradition. An extra long aging period, particularly gentle filtration and controlled oxygen-free bottling also play a part in our product‘s quality. Faust Beer Specialties – The Art of Brewing with Character For generations, Faust beer specialties have combined traditional knowledge, modern technology, craftsmanship, love for the art of brewing as well as the best ingredients to provide an authentic and distinctive taste that has commanded the highest prices. Whether classic brews like a tangy Pils or a sparkling Hefe-Weizen, traditional bock beer or fiery dark Schwarzviertler, Faust Beer always provides a characteristic taste and the highest quality product. We have the right beer for every taste and every occasion: Whether you love stronger beers or alcohol-free thirst-quenchers, we have just what you are looking for. Not to mention our popular, very drinkable festival beer, which is one of our seasonal specialties. Faust Beer Rarities – Enjoyment with History Faust beer specialties are complemented by an exclusive selection of Faust Beer rarities, of which we can confidently say: „Elsewhere treasures are sought. Here we brew them.“ Our beer rarities are exceptional specialties. Their preparation and history make them very special. They are stored in the Faust Schatzkapelle, a torch-lit rock cellar. They mature 30 meters under sandstone cliffs in historic vaults, well protected so that they can age into a very special treat. Our barrel-matured Eisbock, the two-time world champion at the World Beer Cup, is nationally famous. It makes us proud to say: Our Eisbock is the best strong beer in the world! Simply Excellent It‘s always nice when passion, brewing craftsmanship, and the joy of providing quality shine through in a product in the truest sense of the word. Every year, Brauhaus Faust accepts awards and honors in various categories. Let us mention just a few examples. Our several star Superior Taste Award was granted by a panel of flavor experts. The iTQi awards are based on blind tastings by renowned chefs and sommeliers. We are very pleased by the fact that Brauhaus Faust is listed in the Gault&Millau Bavaria. Our beer specialties received excellent reviews from „Genuss“ magazine‘s „selection“ tasting competition. We also were able to secure silver and „big gold“ medals from the Meininger International Award. We are particularly proud, however, of our silver and gold medals from the World Beer Cup and the European Beer Star. The experts from Öko-Test were also inspired by Faust‘s beer rarities. Our Brewery Tours The goal of our guided tours is to make the history of the Brauhaus Faust as well as the art of brewing beer perceptible to guests. Beer lovers can expect a sensual experience as they are guided high up through the brewhouse in the brewery‘s tower and deep into the torch-lit Schatzkapelle in order to see the storage and fermentation rooms, taste the malt and learn much of interest. The historic brewery goes beyond an appeal to „the good old days“ by combining the best of tradition and modernity. If you would like to brew your own beer together with friends or colleagues, then the opportunity to immerse yourself for a few hours in the world of Faust brewing should not be missed. This is possible due to the intimate atmosphere of our little „creative brewery“. If you would like to drop in and be inspired or take a bit of the aura of our brewery home, the Faust Brewery shop offers all sorts of delicacies both for the palate and for the heart. Whether you are spending an exciting day in the Miltenberg Schwarzviertel or want to enjoy a pleasant evening with one of our beer specialties, Faust is always an experience. We look forward to many more decades of operation and to making our region more livable and lovable. Abstract The study of values in Europe, observable through the prism of welfare, consists of an examination of the values of various groups in the domain of welfare, e.g. in the expression and provision of ‘basic’ individual and group needs. The different values and practices of the majority and the minorities are a source of tension in the German society. German policy tries to direct the interaction between majority and minorities towards more cohesion and solidarity. At the same time it becomes more obvious that minority groups influence and challenge majority values.

Two grants from the German Academic Exchange Service allowed me to spend considerable time in Germany. The first enabled me to attend a summer seminar at the Universität Regensburg. This experience greatly improved my German language skills and kindled my deep love of Bavaria. The second allowed me to spend a year in various archives throughout Bavaria collecting the raw material that serves as the basis for this dissertation. For this support, I am eternally grateful. The generosity of the German Academic Exchange Service is matched only by that of the German Historical Institute. The GHI funded two short-term trips to Germany that proved critically important.
