Timeline / Before 1800 to 1840 / GERMANY Date Country Theme 1700 - 1750s Germany Fine And Applied Arts "Palace Schwetzingen" is bulit and flourised under the Palatine Prince Elector Carl Theodor. The baroque castle complex includes more than 100 sculptures and a "Türkischer Garten" ("Turkish Garden") with a mosque, biult from 1779 to 1791, that makes it the earliest mosque- style in Germany and the largest structure of its kind in a german garden. It was designed by Nicolas de Pigage. However the oriental details are not for religious but for decorative purposes. 1700 - 1750s Germany Cities And Urban Spaces The newly built Palace of Schwetzingen (built on the site of a former palace that actually dates back to 1350) flourishes under the Palatine Prince Elector Karl Theodor. Today a heritage site of great cultural significance, it contains some 100 sculptures and is known for its Türkischer Garten, a garden in the Turkish style with a mosque (constructed 1779–91 and the earliest mosque-style and largest structure of its kind in any German garden), designed by French architect Nicolas de Pigage and with “Oriental” details that are for decorative purposes only. German 3600 Survey of German Literature I SPRING 2018 Instructor: Doris McGonagill Class hours: TR 1:30-2:45 pm [email protected] Classroom: LIB 405 Old Main 341D Office hours: T/R 12-1 pm Phone 435.797.9181 and by appointment Course description: This course is the first half of the yearlong survey of German literature. It is primarily designed to offer an introduction to the most important periods and movements in German literary history. It also serves as an introduction to key methods of literary interpretation and tools for understanding literary genres such as poetry, drama, and narrative. In a broad approach, we will interpret literary works against the backdrop of German history, the arts and sciences, politics, and economics. Students will become familiar with important resources and research tools in the field. The class will be conducted primarily in German, and coursework will specifically advance oral and written proficiency in the German language. In addition to reading original works of German literature, there will be background lectures on their political and historical contexts. During the first half of the semester, we will explore the Middle Ages, Reformation, and Baroque periods (800-1700, roughly), and will treat a wide variety of examples, while in the second half of the semester we will focus on the Enlightenment and Storm and Stress periods (18th century), reading at greater length such classics as Lessing’s Emilia Galotti and Goethe’s Die Leiden des jungen Werthers. We shall conclude the semester with a glance at the Classical period and selected texts by Friedrich Schiller. -

TALKING ABOUT THE AESTHETIC OF THE HUMANE: EXPLORING COMMUNICATION IN THE CONTENT AND STRUCTURE OF HEINRICH BÖLL’S EARLY NOVELS A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School Of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts By David Sebastian Low January 2009 © 2009 David Sebastian Low ABSTRACT In his Frankfurter Vorlesungen Heinrich Böll attempts to formulate an aesthetic program that explains how the moral content of writing might be inscribed in its structure. This “aesthetic of the humane” would involve the subject-matter and orientation of a work’s content toward the representation of the historically real and the truth content of that reality. The “real” as it is in the historical world and that “reality” that contains the truth content of the experienced world are to be unified in the aesthetic of the humane, and it is the author who is burdened with the task of mediating the two for her reader. In many of his essays Böll privileges communication as an inherently moral act, and emphasizes the responsibility of the author to use his vocation humanely. In order to understand how Böll realized the concept of the aesthetic of the humane in his own writing we may look to how he uses communication within his texts to demonstrate moral action. Communication between characters at the level of plot corresponds to the author’s obligation to depict the “real” historical component, and communicative structures in the matrix of his novels relate to the “reality” of mediated experience provided as commentary by the author to the reader. -

humanities Article Narrating a Valley in Max Frisch’s Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän: Material Agency, Rain, and the Geologic Past Kiley M. Kost Department of German and Russian, Carleton College, Northfield, IL 55057, USA; [email protected] Abstract: The complex narrative composition of image and text in Max Frisch’s Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän discloses entanglements between humans and nonhuman entities that impact the narrative and that demand careful consideration. The story depicts the aging protagonist’s struggle with memory loss and his careful examination of the valley’s mountain formations in fear of a landslide. In this analysis, I show that both of these threats can be read as entangled with nonhuman agents. By focusing on the material dimension of the text, two central and related shifts occur: the background element of rain becomes foregrounded in the narrative, and the natural formations of the valley that are assumed to be static are revealed to be dynamic. These shifts lead to an interpretation of Frisch’s text focused on the impacts of rain and the temporal scale of the text’s geologic dimension. Approaching the text through the lens of material ecocriticism unveils the multiple agencies at play, decenters the human, and illustrates the embodied experience of climate change. Abstract The story atmosphere includes the setting, scene components, and all the descriptions the author uses to further advance the plot, events, and introduction of characters. In a good story, none of the words and parts of the story are futile and are used in the direction of the author's purpose for the artistic treatment of events and characters of the story. In the novel "The Silent Angel" by Heinrich Boll, the author uses tools such as dark and negative color like yellow and black, describes the scenes and people with negative words and uses several statues to create a cool and sober atmosphere of war also confusion and discouragement of people and inconvenient events and shows them more tangible and powerful to the reader of the story. Heinrich Boll, using the power of symbols in colors and words, brings the reader fully into the story atmosphere and creates all the emotions in the reader that can be seen and received from the warrior city and its people.
