Pherson, Enrico Rava, Tim Berne, Bob Mover, Giorgio Gaslini, Pietro Tonolo, Mario Raja, Furio Di Castri, Rudj Migliardi, Stefano Zenni, Marcello Piras, Claudio Fasoli und Bruno Tommaso. Seit 1997 lebt Alessandro Palmitessa in Köln. Dezember 1910. So. 03.04.2011 Peter Tenner Jazz-Orchester Modern Jazz 21.00 Uhr Nico Lohmann, Katja Gangoly (as) / Dirk Steglich, Birgitta Flick (ts) / Nik Leistle (bs) / Greg Bowen, Lukas Fröhlich, Nikolaus Neuser, Donat Kubrinski (tp) / Nils Marquardt, Andrej Ugoliev, Petra Krumphuber (tb) / Arne Fischer (btb) / Matti Klein (p) / Ralf Graessler (b) / Tobias Backhaus (dr) / special guest: Maria Helmin (voc) Liner notes for Peter Tenner's „10117 Berlin“ Peter Tenner is a musician's musician. Perhaps this statement deserves a short explanation. There are musicians who have gained the admiration of the general public but are accepted, rather than admired by their colleagues. This is not the case of Peter. He's loved and respected by his theory and harmony students at the JIB because he's simply a hell of a theory teacher. He is deeply respected by his colleagues for his consumate knowledge of music in all its facets. In class he may be talking about a particular chord progression in a particular classical piece, then, without taking a breath he sits down at the piano and quotes a passage in a Duke Ellington piece with a similar progression. His knowledge is so formidable that this kind of cross-referencing is automatic. This is only one of the facets of Peter Tenner, musician's musician. Only about a year and a half ago I was made aware of the fact that Peter is also an accomplished arranger. He invited me to a concert at the Schlot, a club in Berlin and I was, again, full of admiration for yet another of his talents! The tunes were interesting and the charts skillfully architected. Shortly after the gig Peter mentioned that he was going into the studio to record these and other newer tunes. I mentioned that I was curious about the results and he asked me if I would write the liner notes. Isn't that what I've been doing the whole time? Ah, yes...“10117 Berlin“ is the title of Peter's new CD and the title tune is one of my favorites on the album. It's a dark and moody excursion in 5/4 with a haunting melody that immediately grabs you. It's then directly followed by ”March in Edinburgh“, a quirky scottish flavored piece with a lovely melody calling to mind not only the scottish bagpipes, but also the ornamentation style of Bach. The first piece on the album is a very personal rendition of the jazz standard, ”All the things you are“, which keeps it's little ”secret“ till well into the first half of the piece. Well done! I won't spoil the surprise by describing each piece. The exciting thing about music is the discovery that comes with really listening. So, sit back and check out Peter Tenner's ”10117 Berlin“. Resident at the Flamingo was the Kenny Graham group and the club was known for weekend ‘all-nighters’ at this time. Date, artist and name of tune all taken from annotations on the label. This acetate was backed with The Ronnie Scott Group playing Seven Eleven Part I & II/Night & Day/Trottin’/Scott Theme. The discs are aurally crude amateur recordings but represent the earliest re- cordings of Hayes as a leader at age 18.
