Kentucky’s “Atomic Graveyard”: Maxey Flats and Environmental Inequity in Rural America By Caroline Peyton In 1962, with powers vested by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commis- sion (AEC), Kentucky licensed a low-level radioactive waste disposal facility, the Maxey Flats Disposal Site.1 Located in northeastern Ken- tucky’s rural Fleming County, the site’s shallow trenches welcomed nuclear garbage, ranging from medical scrubs to highly radioactive “special nuclear material” from 1963 to 1977. 2 During the mid-1970s, a state investigation detected the presence of plutonium, a transuranic radioactive chemical element, in offsite water sources. Soon thereaf- ter, an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study revealed what many feared: plutonium had moved beyond the site’s trenches and would conceivably continue to do so. The findings challenged the 1 Local residents refer to the area as “Maxey Flat.” I employ the name Maxey Flats, per government documents. • Teddy Pendergrass - If You Don’T Know Me
TEDDY PENDERGRASS - IF YOU DON’T KNOW ME A Documentary Film by Olivia Lichtenstein 106 Mins This is the story of legendary singer, Teddy Pendergrass, the man who would have been the biggest R&B artist of all time. The story of a childhood in a Philadelphia ghetto; of the murders of his father and first manager; of sex, drugs, money and global fame; of the triumph against injustice; and of the tragic accident that changed his life forever at the age of only 31. His was a life where, despite poverty, racism, and violence, he managed to become one of the first African-American artists to go multi-platinum over and over again. A man who actively championed the rights of black artists when discrimination was rife. A man who in the years after becoming quadriplegic, overcame depression and thoughts of suicide and resumed doing what he loved best - making music. A man who left a priceless legacy after his death, with the music he had made and the people he touched. With revealing and exclusive interviews from the people who knew Teddy best, a soulful soundtrack, and rarely seen archive, it’s a story that all too few really know and which is crying out to be told… Hammersmith Odeon, London, February 3rd 1982. It’s a cold night and fans – almost all of them women - are swarming at the entrance eager to see their idol, the biggest male R&B artist of the time, even bigger then than closest rivals, Marvin Gaye and Barry White. Teddy Pendergrass – the Teddy Bear, the ‘Black Elvis’ - tall and handsome with a distinctive husky soulful voice that could melt a woman’s clothes clean off her body! 'It took Teddy eleven seconds to get to the point with a girl that would take me two dinners and a trip to meet her parents,' says Daniel Markus, one of his managers.

  • A Study of Music Publishers, Collecting Societies and Media Conglomerates'
Prometheus, Vol. 17, No. 2, 1999 163 The Changing Location of Intellectual Property Rights in Music : A Study of Music Publishers, Collecting Societies and Media Conglomerates' MARTIN KRETSCHMER, GEORGE MICHAEL KLIMIS & ROGER WALLIS ABSTRACT This article reports the results of a major study, conducted between 1996 and 1999, examining the impact of de-regulation and digital technologies on the global music industry . 14/e analyse four negotiations in the process of bringing music to the world market: commod#ication, globalisation, delivery, and royalty management. 141e show that the location of intellectual property rights in this process depends on the mutual bargaining power of the parties involved, within a statutory frame vesting music copyright initially in the author. 14,e describe the forces which have led to the appropriation of rights accounting for 80% of global publishing and recording revenues 1y only five companies : LA71 (U)) Bertelsmann (Germany), 141'arner (US), Sony (Japan) and Universal (Canada) . 14'e predict that this regime will not last and consider the likely future location of intellectual properly rights in music . Keywords : globalisation, information society, intellectual property, music copyright, royalty, vertical integration . Introduction Music is covered by complex intellectual property provisions . A right arises if an original musical idea is given a fixed expression ; for example, if a song is written down or recorded in some other from . This right is located in the creator of that musical idea . By an act of legislation, the musical idea turns into a copyrighted work, owned by the creator, who will have the power to prevent others from using it .

The Record Producer as Nexus: Creative Inspiration, Technology and the Recording Industry A submission presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Glamorgan/Prifysgol Morgannwg for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Michael John Gilmour Howlett April 2009 ii I certify that the work presented in this dissertation is my own, and has not been presented, or is currently submitted, in candidature for any degree at any other University: _____________________________________________________________ Michael Howlett iii The Record Producer as Nexus: Creative Inspiration, Technology and the Recording Industry Abstract What is a record producer? There is a degree of mystery and uncertainty about just what goes on behind the studio door. Some producers are seen as Svengali- like figures manipulating artists into mass consumer product. Producers are sometimes seen as mere technicians whose job is simply to set up a few microphones and press the record button. Close examination of the recording process will show how far this is from a complete picture. Artists are special—they come with an inspiration, and a talent, but also with a variety of complications, and in many ways a recording studio can seem the least likely place for creative expression and for an affective performance to happen. The task of the record producer is to engage with these artists and their songs and turn these potentials into form through the technology of the recording studio. The purpose of the exercise is to disseminate this fixed form to an imagined audience—generally in the hope that this audience will prove to be real.
