Context

Historical Note After the Russian October Revolution in 1917 both communism and nationalism gained in strength in the Near East; to further communism in Iran, Turkey and other countries of the Near East the COMINTERN set up a Council of Propaganda and Actions of the Peoples of the East in Baku, Azerbaijan, which had become a republic within the Soviet Union in 1920; the Congress of Peoples of the East was held here in 1920 too and in the same year the Iranian Adalat (Justice) Party which was founded in Baku in 1917, changed its name into Ferqeh-e Komunist-e , (حزب عدالت ) Iranian communists ;( حزب کمونیست ایران Communist Party of Iran)فرقه کمونیستی ایران Irān ,in the north of Iran , (گیلان) played an important role in the Soviet Socialist Republic in Gilān ,after his seizure of power in Iran in 1921; in Turkey (رضاخان) which was destroyed by Rezā Khān communists participated in the national liberation struggle but were forced into illegality after the chairman of the Türkiye Komnist Partisi (TKP), and other , (مصطفی صوفی) killing of Mustafa Suphi TKP leaders by the nationalists in 1921.

Acquisition The archives were purchased by the IISH from the Central State Archives of the Social Movements and Political Parties of the Azerbaijan Republic in 1995.

Content and Structure

Content Records from the archives of the Council of Propaganda and Actions of the Peoples of the East, including documents relating to the Communist Party of Iran (CPI) and the Communist Party of Azerbaijan (CPA). Council of Propaganda and Actions of the Peoples of the East (CP&APE): correspondence with the CPI and the TKP, including reports on the situation in Egypt, Iran, Palestine, Turkey and other countries; minutes of meetings of the presidium of the CP&APE and documents on the Congress of Peoples of the East. Communist Party of Iran (CPI): minutes of its second congress, of general meetings and of meetings of its Central Committee, its Foreign Bureau and its Organizational Bureau; correspondence with its members, with the CPA, the COMINTERN and other organizations; party programs; financial documents; files concerning the , (کامران آقازاده) Maherram Agayev, Kamran Agazāde , (بهرام آقایف) CPI members Bahrām Agayev documents ; (حمید سلطانف) Salamullā Madatzāde and Hamid Sultanov , (کولی زاده) Kulizāde concerning workers' and peasant movements in Iran, the Persian school, and other subjects; نریمان) and documents from Nariman Narimanov (گ. بیگدلی ) manuscripts by G. Begdeli (Hurriyat, Haqiqa , (بیرق عدالت )copies of CPI periodicals, including Beyrag-e Adalat ; (نریمانف and other printed material. Communist Party (ستاره سرخ) and Setareh-e Sorkhحریت حقیقت)
