In Brazil, the cotton boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis, is the most important cotton pest. The use of insecticidal proteins and gene silencing by interference RNA (RNAi) as techniques for insect control are promising strategies, which has been applied in the last few years. For this insect, there are not much available molecular information on databases. Using 454-pyrosequencing methodology, the transcriptome of all developmental stages of the insect pest, A. grandis, was analyzed. The A. grandis transcriptome analysis resulted in more than 500.000 reads and a data set of high quality 20,841 contigs. After sequence assembly and annotation, around 10,600 contigs had at least one BLAST hit against NCBI non- redundant protein database and 65.7% was similar to Tribolium castaneum sequences. -

In total, 77 species from 13 families have been identified. Their seasonal occurrence in this habitat was also investigated, with most species recorded in wet season between September and April, but with clear peak in February and March. The family Noctuidae was by far the most speciose (38 recorded species), followed by Crambidae (8 spp.), Sphingidae (6 spp.) and Arctiidae (4 spp.). All other families were represented by 1–3 species. For each species listed date of collection is given, and data on its global distribution. Lepidoptera fauna of Namibia has recently attracted attention of European entomologists. However, thorough surveys were conducted hitherto in a few areas only, such as Brandberg and Hobatere. The northern regions of the country were especially badly neglected. The cluster will create a $2.5M biofuel investment opportunity and is part of a larger government plan to develop a biofuel park in Ethiopia. This park is a critical step to reduce the country's commitment of 87% of free cash on imported crude while at the same time creating local job opportunities and an ecosystem of value added businesses. Phase 1 is a 2,000 plus acre footprint under a collaborative model involving the participation of a local partner bringing in land and labour, investors putting the capital and VayuGrid providing the IP and downstream contracts, thereby creating a sustainable and replicable business model. TD The long term goal is to create biofuel cluster and replicate a certain scale of footprint in 100,000 acres. During a recently concluded roadshow in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Doctor Abera Deressa, former state minister for Agriculture, indicated that Pongamia tree products can be an important factor in community development and environmental protection. VayuGrid's IP in elite Pongamia combines high-yield plant technology along with customised practices to ensure economic returns that assure such biofuel parks are financially sustainable to governments and investors. Activity patterns of caterpillars of three species of Lasiocampidae were long-time monitored by electronic data acquisition. We used these data to test the hypothesis that the coloration of a caterpil- lar corresponds to its activity patterns. Caterpillars with warning colours (usually supposed to be chemi- cally or physically well-defended) should forage conspicuously throughout the day whereas cryptic caterpillars (supposed to be 'palatable') should have behavioural mechanisms for reducing exposure to natural enemies (hiding, nocturnal feeding). In terms of predator avoidance and thermoregulation social caterpillars should be strongly synchronized when foraging. Social caterpillars of Eriogaster lanestris (Linnaeus, 1758) were strongly synchronized and fed day and night, but synchronicity was low during moulting time and at the end of the last instar. Caterpillars of Macrothylacia rubi (Linnaeus. 1758) despite their aposematic colour and urticating hairs proved to be strictly nocturnal while larvae of Gastropacha populifolia ([Denis & Schiffermüller]. -
Four Noctuid (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Taxa New for the Fauna of Iran
Four noctuid (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) taxa new for the fauna of Iran Mehdi Esfandiari, Mohammad Saeed Mossadegh, Parviz Shishehbor, Kauri Mikkola and Seyed Hosein Hodjat Abstract. Three species, Grammodes boisdeffrii (Oberthür, 1876), Dysmilichia flavonigra (Swinhoe, 1884), Mythimna congrua (Hübner, [1817]), and the nominate subspecies Drasteria kabylaria kabylaria (Bang-Haas, 1906), are reported for the first time from Iran. These species were collected in sugarcane fields' areas of Khuzestan province, south-west Iran. Adults and genitalia of each species are illustrated, with notes on their identification, bionomy and distribution. Samenvatting. Vier Noctuidae-soorten (Lepidoptera) nieuw voor de fauna van Iran Drie soorten, Grammodes boisdeffrii (Oberthür, 1876), Dysmilichia flavonigra (Swinhoe, 1884) en Mythimna congrua (Hübner, [1817]), en de nominale subspecies Drasteria kabylaria kabylaria (Bang-Haas, 1906), worden hier voor het eerst uit Iran vermeld. Deze soorten werden verzameld in suikerrietvelden in de provincie Khuzestan (Zuidwest-Iran). De adulten en genitalia van elke soort worden afgebeeld, en info over hun identificatie, bionomie en verspreiding worden gegeven. Résumé.
