Protection of Pandora Moth (Coloradia Pandora Blake) Eggs from Consumption by Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus Lateralis Say)

McComb Endemic populations of pandora moths (Coloradia pandora Blake), a defoliator of western pine forests, proliferated to epidemic levels in central Oregon in 1986 and increased dramatically through 1994. Golden-mantled ground squirrels (Spermophilus lateralis Say) consume adult pandora moths, but reject nutritionally valuable eggs from gravid females. Feeding trials with captive S. lateralis were conducted to identify the mode of egg protection. Chemical constituents of fertilized eggs were separated through a polarity gradient of solvent extractions. Consumption of the resulting hexane, dichloromethane, and water egg fractions, and the extracted egg tissue residue, was evaluated by randomized 2-choice feeding tests. Consumption of four physically distinct egg fractions (whole eggs, "whole" egg shells, ground egg shells, and egg contents) also was evaluated. These bioassays indicated that C. pandora eggs are not protected chemically, however, the egg shell does inhibit S. lateralis consumption. Egg protection is one mechanism that enables C. pandora to persist within the forest food web. G. – Eggs of 9 species belonging to 5 genera of Lasiocampidae were examined with the use of scanning electron microscopy. Descriptions and comparative morphological analysis are provided for all these species. As a result, all the examined species are divided into 2 groups and 2 subgroups; the diagnostic charac- ters for genera and species are chosen. Introduction There is a number of recently published papers concerning the use of SEM (scanning electron microscopy) for the investigation of the surface eggshell structure in Lepidoptera. Hinton (1981) published a voluminous review of various chorion structures of insect eggs, including Lepidoptera. Many works are devoted to the egg morphology of Heterocera, mostly of Noctuidae and Geometridae (Salkeld, 1975; 1976; 1977; 1983; 1984; Hill, 1982; Fehrenbach & al., 1987; Suludere, 1988 a). -

Among these vertebrates, birds rank first. Insectivorous birds are accepted as active agents in the control of forest and agricultural pests. They protect the natural balance by eating the adults, larvae, pupae and eggs of insects. In this review, we aimed to especially give information about the importance of birds that are effective in protecting against pests of forests within biological control. Key words: Biological control, entomophagous, birds, forest pests Özet: Zararlı böcekler üzerinde omurgalıların baskısı oldukça yüksektir. Bu omurgalılar arasında kuĢlar ilk sırayı almaktadır. Böcekçil kuĢlar, ormanlarda ve tarımda zararlı olan böceklerin mücadelesinde potansiyel etkin etmen olarak kabul görmektedirler. Böceklerin erginlerini, pupalarını, larvalarını ve yumurtalarını yiyerek doğal dengeyi korunmaktadırlar. Bu derlemede özellikle ormanların zararlılara karĢı korunmasında etkili olan kuĢların biyolojik mücadeledeki önemi hakkında bilgiler verilmeye çalıĢılmıĢtır. Anahtar sözcükler: Biyolojik etmen, entomofag kuĢlar, orman zararlıları GiriĢ KuĢlar yüksek oranda enerji tükettiklerinden sık sık beslenmek zorundadırlar. Beslenmeleri için gerekli olan adaptasyonları kuĢların evriminin çarpıcı bir özelliğidir. Bu adaptasyonlar yalnızca beslenirken hareket etmeleri ve besinlerini yakalamaları değil aynı zamanda çok çeĢitli dil yapılarıyla baĢlayan sindirim sistemlerinin tamamının özelleĢmiĢ olmasıdır (Kasarov 1996). KuĢlar diğer omurgalılar gibi diĢlere sahip olmadıkları için gagalarını yalnızca kabuklu tohumların kabuklarını ayırmak için ya da ağızla alınamayacak kadar büyük olan avlarını parçalamak için kullanırlar. Besin gagayla alındıktan sonra ilk olarak proventrikulusta kimyasal enzimlere maruz bırakılır, sonrasında fiziksel sindirim için gizzarda gönderilir ve sindirim olayı gerçekleĢtirilir. -

Seasonal distribution of moths of the Koakoland (Mopane) Savanna in Ogongo, northern Namibia Grzegorz KOPIJ Department of Wildlife Management, University of Namibia, Katima Mulilio Campus, Private Bag 1096, Katima Mulilo, Namibia; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: During the years 2011–2013, moths were collected in Koakoland (Mopane) Savanna in the Cuvelai Drainage System, Ovamboland, northern Namibia. In total, 77 species from 13 families have been identified. Their seasonal occurrence in this habitat was also investigated, with most species recorded in wet season between September and April, but with clear peak in February and March. The family Noctuidae was by far the most speciose (38 recorded species), followed by Crambidae (8 spp.), Sphingidae (6 spp.) and Arctiidae (4 spp.). All other families were represented by 1–3 species. For each species listed date of collection is given, and data on its global distribution. Lepidoptera fauna of Namibia has recently attracted attention of European entomologists. However, thorough surveys were conducted hitherto in a few areas only, such as Brandberg and Hobatere. The northern regions of the country were especially badly neglected.
