Archbishop Don Bolen Class of '82 volume 28, no. 2 fall/winter 2016 The University of Regina Magazine Archbishop Don Bolen Class of '82 The glass Annunciation mosaic of Gabriel and Mary, entitled “Joy to the World” Annunciation in the Chapel at Holy Family Cathedral in Saskatoon. The mosaic is just one of the stunning works of art in the Cathedral by internationally recognized artist Sarah Hall, RCA. Known for her large-scale art glass installations and solar projects, Hall and the subject of our cover story, Archbishop Don Bolen, co-authoured the 2012 book Transfiguring Prairie Skies. The commemorative book takes an in-depth look at the Cathedral’s signature glass art works. The book features photos accompanied by reflections by Bolen on the five scriptural themes depicted by Hall’s vision. Hidden among the mosaic tiles that make up the earth are a few with barely visible, daintily etched words such as Saskatoon, Paderborn, Holy Land (in the tradition of artists hidden humour in their work) and Roughriders. • An Interview with Bishop Donald Bolen, Chairman of The
1 An Interview with Bishop Donald Bolen, Chairman of the Commission for Justice and Peace of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops on Catholic Responses to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action By Kiply Lukan Yaworski March 24, 2016 Why is the Catholic Church in Canada issuing statements on the Doctrine of Discovery and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples? The statements are both responses to Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Calls to Action #46 and #49 invite faith communities to repudiate concepts used to justify European sovereignty over Indigenous lands and peoples, such as the Doctrine of Discovery and terra nullius. Call to Action #46 also invites the full adoption and implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Call to Action #48 expands on that, drawing specific attention to the right to self-determination in spiritual matters, calling for internal reform where necessary, encouraging public dialogue and actions in support of the Declaration. Like many other Christian communities, the Catholic Church has supported the TRC process, and is eager to engage with its Calls to Action. Why now? The TRC specifically invited each religious denomination to issue a statement no later than March 31, 2016 indicating how they would implement the UN Declaration. Regarding the Doctrine of Discovery, the Justice and Peace Commission of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has been working on a statement for over a year. Controversies about what the Doctrine of Discovery means, calls for its repudiation, and the request from some quarters for Pope Francis to revoke certain papal statements from the 15th century, invited both comment and clarification.

  • Pope Francis and Church Accused of Covering up Abuses of Former U.S. Cardinal
Pope Francis and Church accused of covering up abuses of former U.S. cardinal A former apostolic nuncio to the United States accused church officials, including Pope Francis, of failing to act on accusations of abuse of conscience and power by now-Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick. In an open letter first published by Lifesite News and National Catholic Register Aug. 26, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, who served as nuncio to the United States from 2011-2016, wrote that he was compelled to write his knowledge of Archbishop McCarrick’s misdeeds because “corruption has reached the very top of the church’s hierarchy.” Archbishop Vigano confirmed to the Washington Post Aug. 26 that he wrote the letter and said he would not comment further. Despite repeated requests from journalists, the Vatican had not responded to the allegations by midday Aug. 26. Throughout the 11-page testimony, which was translated by a Lifesite News correspondent, the former nuncio made several claims and accusations against prominent church officials, alleging they belong to “a homosexual current” that subverted church teaching on homosexuality. Citing the rights of the faithful to “know who knew and who covered up (Archbishop McCarrick’s) grave misdeeds,” Archbishop Vigano named nearly a dozen former and current Vatican officials who he claimed were aware of the accusations. Archbishop Vigano criticized Pope Francis for not taking action against Cardinal McCarrick after he claimed he told the pope of the allegations in 2013. However, he did not make any criticism of St. John Paul II, who appointed Archbishop McCarrick to lead the Archdiocese of Washington and made him a cardinal in 2001.
