There is still much to be done before the end of June. I ask all councils to work on the following programs in the next 6 weeks.

 Sign up at least 1 new member before the end of June.  Work to achieve Star Council  Make sure your council is Safe Environment Compliant.  Complete your SP7---Columbian Award Application.  Submit the list of your GK, FS, Membership Director, and Council Chaplain to Gerry Gieni, Executive Secretary, by June 10th.  Hold a Church Drive in your council and hold an Admission Degree in honor of the Bishop in your diocese.  Develop a yearly plan of activities for next year so that you can hit the ground running on July 1st. Councils should be active all year round and should not be inactive in July and August. Masses are still held during July and August and Knights can still be active with some great family projects.

I thank all of you for all that you have done during this past year. I look forward to finishing the year strong to the end of June as well as to a great start to next year’s Columbian Year.

If you would like to serve the State Council at the State Level in the area of a Regional Program and Membership Consultant or as a State Program Director, please give me a call—240-8872 or email [email protected].

May 2019 State Chaplain’s Message

In this month of May, a month in which we honour our Blessed Mother Mary and thank her for all the times that she has interceded, on our behalf, to her Son Jesus, the faithful turn to her, more and more, for her support and strength to face the growing difficulties in the world today.

In recent years devotion to the Virgin Mary of Medjugorje, the yet unauthenticated sightings of Mary at a location in Bosnia-Herzegovina, has grown to rival Church authenticated devotions such as Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of Guadalupe. Devotions in Medjugorje are centred around the account of six young people who claim to have first seen visions of Our Lady, at this location, in June 1981 and that these visitations continue to occur.

In early May, took the step of authorizing pilgrimages to Medjugorje, officially organized by Churches and Diocese’. In the past, such tours were organized privately, without the authorization of the Catholic Church. With this announcement, Pope Francis is “encouraging and promoting the fruits of good," holding that if this devotion brings forth good, then the Church will not stand in the way of that good.

However, this announcement also came with a warning. It was stated that this papal authorization must be accompanied by "care to prevent these pilgrimages from being interpreted as authentication of known events, which (Continued on page3 )

www.kofcsask.com Page 3 May 2019

(Continued from page2 ) still require examination by the Church.” This is to say that Pope Francis’ allowing of Catholic Church and Diocese sponsored pilgrimages to Medjugorje IS NOT an authentication of the declared appearances of Mary at this location nor the miracles attributed there. The process surrounding authentication of those events is on-going and the allowing of authorized pilgrimages to Medjugoje does not, in any way, confirm the reported visions and miracles.

Pope Francis is telling us to focus on the good that comes, from Jesus, through Mary, and that we should not let worldly issues, such as authentication of the events at Medjugorje, to draw our attention away from Mary, Mother of us all, and our thanking her for always pointing us toward her Son.

Greetings Brother Knights, I have learned that fear limits our vision and us. It serves as blinders to what may be just a few steps down the road for us. To have a journey is valuable, but believing in our talents, our abilities, and our self-worth can empower us to walk down an ever-brighter path.

Being a Knight, I transform my fear into freedom. My goal as Chairman of the Cultural Diversity is to reach the Ethnic Catholic immigrants here in Saskatchewan and thanks to our Worthy State Deputy Chris Bencharski for giving me an opportunity to go around in some places in our jurisdiction to talk and meet different people. Finding new members is the number one responsibility of our Order. However, where are they? The answer is too easy it is in the Church and in the community, the only questions is how to interact with them properly, how to get their interest so we can invite them to join in any councils here in Saskatchewan.

Doing Pulpit announcements in the Church drives is still a very effective way of approaching people; we just need to speak in front of them of what we are doing and why we are doing this. “If you can tell a story well, you can move people to do something.” In addition, after the announcement never be afraid to approach them and start a conversation. Never be afraid to admit about how we the Knights and the Church start losing so many of our young people especially when they go to college. Be honest and let them understand the significance of this loss for the Church; because a loss for the Church is also a loss for them.

In the future, I propose to create a simple gathering or an event to be hosted by any council willing to be involved to have a concept of intentional spiritual conversation with the parishioners of their parish. Will invite them for at least two hours (the most) having a conversation with them over a cup of coffee. The council with the help of the Parish Priest or Chaplain will invite maybe at least 10 families or 10 couples in a spiritual session. Most of us know that young generations even they are born and raised as Catholic are now no longer practicing their faith as Catholic. All of them have a common question, “What did I do wrong?” This is not a rhetorical question but we have an answer for this. “It’s not a matter of what we did wrong, but of what we Catholics, by and large, haven’t yet learned to do. This program of intentional spiritual conversation might not sound simple, while all of us understand the idea of conversation, we might be uncertain about what it would mean to them or how to go about initiating them. Nevertheless, if we succeed in doing this, a relationship between us will be born and trust and respect will follow.

In one of my articles, we need to do the culture encounter reaching different people as Pope Francis said, “Christ is constantly reaching out to us, but an encounter only happens when the invitation is acknowledged and responded to. By encountering Christ, we can encounter others. This means reaching out, building friendship beyond our circle and meeting people on the peripheries, the poorest and vulnerable, migrants and refugees.”

We need a relationship; we need a bridge to reach them. I believe being a Knight we need to spend more time with other people as this will elevate our integrity and will boost our outlook. It will help to reach our goals; encouragement from us will boost their willpower for us to increase our chance of success. Having active communication with them always will help reduce the isolation that is a major contributing factor to depression. Remember having a relationship is a two-way street and the “give” side of the give-and-take contributes to your own self-worth. Being there for them makes you feel needed and adds purpose to our life. The values and the benefits of having a relationship will make our Order strong. When there is a relationship, any idea will make sense, but when there is no relationship it will only become a world of debate.

Let us continue to build a relationship to any stranger and bring it to our Order. We need an encounter with them, people that are already part of our community sometimes being ignored and never approached.

As of now, we have lots of new brothers belonging to Ethnic Catholic Immigrant like people from the Hispanic (Continued on page5 )

www.kofcsask.com Page 5 May 2019

(Continued from page4 ) community, East Indian from Sylo-Malabar, Brothers from Ghana, Kenyans, Chinese, Filipinos, Chaldeans, Indonesian, and Vietnamese, etc. These ethnic Catholics bring an intrinsic quality of Catholicism and in addition to them are people from Irish, German, Polish, Ukrainian and French and others. These are composed of Catholic ethnicity or maybe now having mixed ethnicity. But we are the Church whatever race we came from.

The basis for all of this is that we the Church believes about the moral dimensions of economic life is its vision of the transcendent worth - the sacredness - of human beings. The dignity of the human person, realized in community with others, is the criterion against which all aspects of economic life must be measured.

"Are you capable of risking your life for someone? Do it for Christ." Pope John Paul II

Culture of Life Report

During my remarks to the assembled, at the recently held 2019 State Knights of Columbus Convention, I briefly discussed Bill C-418 as a Bill meant to protect the Freedom of conscience for Doctors in Canada. In order for one to gain information on this Bill and the type of action one can take, I referred you to go to Campaign Life site and pull up “help us pass the freedom of conscience protection act”. The first hour of debate in the House of Commons is scheduled for May 29, 2019.

The following is a copy of a letter I would encourage each Knight of Columbus member to sign. Members are encouraged, also, to have family members and others from their community and Parish to as well sign the letter. Once signed, simply send it in an envelope, no postage necessary, with your name and home address on the envelope to: Brad Trost, MP Saskatoon-University House of Commons , ON K1A 0A6

Dear Minister Lametti: I would like to draw your attention to Private Members Bill C-418, the Protection of Freedom of Conscience Act because l believe it deserves your consideration and support.

Bill C-418 amends the Criminal Code to make it an offense to intimidate a medical practitioner, nurse practitioner, pharmacist or any other health care professional for compelling them to take part, directly or indirectly, in the provision of medical assistance in dying. It also makes it an offense to dismiss from employment or to refuse to employ a medical practitioner, nurse practitioner, pharmacist or any other health care professional tor the reason only that they refuse to take part directly or indirectly, in the provision of medical assistance in dying.

I believe it's time to stand up for doctors and health care providers who aren't willing to leave their core ethics behind when they're at a patient's bedside. The protection of conscience rights for medical professionals is part of protecting the fundamental freedom of conscience and religion guaranteed to all Canadians in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Re: Council #8215 Celebrity Dinner Supporting the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation

Dear Brother Knights,

Over the past five years with the help of many generous people, we have managed to raise well over $300,000 to the benefit of the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. This success was achieved in no small part due to the solidarity of several councils. We are very grateful to:

#5256 - Fr. Hermes, St. Walburg, SK. #5549 - Mount Carmel, Landis, SK. #5707 - Unity, SK. #8215 - Denis Mahoney, Saskatoon, SK. #8279 - Msgr. Robinson, Saskatoon, SK. #10239 - Fr. Zimmerman, , SK. #13214 - Resurrection, Regina SK.

Together we have helped to build a place of treatment and healing for our province’s children and grandchildren. For our efforts, the Knights of Columbus have been recognized in the dedication of a Maternal Care Room (#3705) in the Pediatric Care Unit of the hospital. Additionally, we have been given an opportunity, in which the Knights would be involved in the spiritual care of the hospital. There is also potential to help facilitate a private family respite room. This is a great honor and responsibility; if we are to move forward successfully, we will need additional support in the important work ahead.

The 6th Annual Knights of Columbus Celebrity Dinner, presented by Les & Irene Dubé will again be hosted by Council #8215 on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019. The guest speaker for this event will be Todd Burpo who co-authored the book "Heaven is For Real", a #1 New York Times Bestseller which recounts his young son's near-death experience. The book also inspired a movie of the same name. The event will include live music entertainment by both St. Joseph's High School Choir and "Kids of Note". As well there will be a live auction, a major prize raffle and other draws to round out the evening. The attached brochure speaks in greater detail about what can be expected by those in attendance.

We have major supporters committed to working with us in 2020 thru 2022, but still, require additional councils to help make this fundraiser the success that it needs to be. Thank you for your careful consideration in supporting this event, ensuring the Knight’s continued strong witness to The Church that Christ established, inside this hospital, for many years. We look forward to hearing from you.

Vivat Jesus!

As an organization of Catholic men, the Knights of Columbus were granted a charter on March 29th, 1882 in New Ha- ven, Connecticut. Led by Michael J. McGivney, an Irish-American priest, the organization began as a mutual benefit society for working-class and immigrant Catholics in America. The group evolved into a fraternal benefit society dedi- cated to providing charitable, education, insurance, and other services to anyone in need. The organization grew throughout the U.S. and into Canada.

On July 13, 1919, the Yorkton Council Number 2031 was granted a charter to create a local society. As the “strong right arm” of St. Gerard Parish, the members of Council 2031 dedicate their time and funds raised for the betterment of their Parish and Community. The Knights of Columbus organization is dedicated to the principles of Charity, Unity, Fra- ternity, and Patriotism. Charity is the foremost principle, and our council enacts this in our community in a number of ways.

Some of our recent charitable activities, in no specific order:  $1,000.00 donation to the Health Foundation  $100.00 scholarship x2 for Yorkton Music Festival participants  $1,500.00 donation to SaskAbilities for Camp Easter Seals program  $650.00 raised and participation in Bowl for Kid's Sake event  $500.00 scholarship x2 for students graduating Sacred Heart High School  $950.00 for Local and Provincial Special Olympics

We provide funding, hosting, and volunteers for a variety of community programs and projects including Youth camps, Salvation Army, Sponsored refugee family, Zion 8th Group Scouts, Big Brothers Big Sisters, SIGN Seniors Mobility vehi- cle, Habitat for Humanity, Shelwin House, Families in need, Kids help phone, our local Schools, and support many other groups and individuals in our community.

For our 100th anniversary, our council will be raising funds to purchase an anniversary park bench that will be located in the Knights of Columbus Park in Yorkton. In addition, we will continue to support our Parish and Community. We will be augmenting this effort by establishing a special anniversary program entitled “100 Acts for 100 Years” with the goal of achieving 100 Acts of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, or Patriotism during the anniversary year of celebration. We invite everyone in our Parish and Community to help us achieve this goal.
