Manteca”--Dizzy Gillespie Big Band with Chano Pozo (1947) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Raul Fernandez (Guest Post)*
“Manteca”--Dizzy Gillespie Big Band with Chano Pozo (1947) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Raul Fernandez (guest post)* Chano Pozo and Dizzy Gillespie The jazz standard “Manteca” was the product of a collaboration between Charles Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie and Cuban musician, composer and dancer Luciano (Chano) Pozo González. “Manteca” signified one of the beginning steps on the road from Afro-Cuban rhythms to Latin jazz. In the years leading up to 1940, Cuban rhythms and melodies migrated to the United States, while, simultaneously, the sounds of American jazz traveled across the Caribbean. Musicians and audiences acquainted themselves with each other’s musical idioms as they played and danced to rhumba, conga and big-band swing. Anthropologist, dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham was instrumental in bringing several Cuban drummers who performed in authentic style with her dance troupe in New York in the mid-1940s. All this laid the groundwork for the fusion of jazz and Afro-Cuban music that was to occur in New York City in the 1940s, which brought in a completely new musical form to enthusiastic audiences of all kinds. This coming fusion was “in the air.” A brash young group of artists looking to push jazz in fresh directions began to experiment with a radical new approach. Often playing at speeds beyond the skills of most performers, the new sound, “bebop,” became the proving ground for young New York jazz musicians. One of them, “Dizzy” Gillespie, was destined to become a major force in the development of Afro-Cuban or Latin jazz. Gillespie was interested in the complex rhythms played by Cuban orchestras in New York, in particular the hot dance mixture of jazz with Afro-Cuban sounds presented in the early 1940s by Mario Bauzá and Machito’s Afrocubans Orchestra which included singer Graciela’s balmy ballads. -

DESCRIPTORS Audiovisual Aids; *Classroom Communication; Classroom Techniques; *Communicative Competence (Languages); Inservice Teacher Education; Instructional Improvement; Intermediate Grades; *Lesson Plans; Secondary Education; *Second Lenguage Instruction; *Teacher Developed Materials ABSTRACT This collection of 98 lesson plans for foreign language instruction is the result of a series of eight Saturday workshops focusing on ways that language teachers can develop their own communicative activities for application in the classroom. The ).essons wert produced by 30 foreign language teachers, each of whom was required to write a brief report on how techniques and methods of instruction covered in each workshop session could be incorporated into lesson planning, and to create an actual lesson plan based on the report. Most were successfully implemented before inclusion in the collection. While the reports and plans are language-specific, the activities can be adapted for any modern language. Strategies on which the lessons are built include confidence-building, student-centered communication, use of audio-visual materials, development of oral/aural skills, increasing motivation, introducing and stimulating cultural awareness and appreciation, and evaluating skill development. Some lesson plans are illust.rated or contain reproducible materials. Reviews: Baby It’s Cold Outside Chris Pasin, trumpet; Patricia Dalton Fennell, vocals; Armen Donelian, piano; Ira Coleman, bass; Rich Syracuse, bass; Peter Einhorn, guitar; Jeff Siegel, drums Today’s Deep Roots Christmas Pick. December 20, 2017: Chris Pasin and Friends – ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ Deep Roots, David McGee Here’s a holiday outing that should satisfy traditionalists and adventurous spirits alike, a true rarity. Trumpeter/flugelhorn master Chris Pasin, whose resume includes several years touring as a soloist with Buddy Rich and backing giants on the order of Sinatra, Torme, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, Ray Charles and Tony Bennett, as well crafting his own projects with some of New York’s finest jazz players, has brought some Gotham friends together, along with upstate New York-based vocalist Patricia Dalton Fennell (in a dual role as vocalist and producer), and given the holiday season the scintillating Baby It’s Cold Outside. For those more interested in new insights into seasonal warhorses, Pasin and friends offer a five-and-a- half-minute journey through “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” featuring discursive solos by Pasin on trumpet and pianist Armen Donelian, as well as a tasty drum-and-bass dialogue between Jeff Siegel and Ira Coleman, respectively, plus a couple of nice tempo changes for added texture. Similarly, “We Three Kings of Orient Are” is almost unrecognizable when Pasin soars into upper register impressionistic flurries before giving way to Donelian skittering across the keys and taking the melody line into uncharted waters over the course of six-and-a-half minutes. -
A Little Book of Eternal Wisdom
A Little Book of Eternal Wisdom Author(s): Suso, Henry (1295-1366) Publisher: Burns, Oates, & Washbourne Ltd., London Description: ªThe Little Book of Eternal Wisdom is among the best of the writings of Blessed Henry Suso, a priest of the Order of St. Dominic, who lived a life of wonderful labours and sufferings, and died in the Fourteenth century with a reputation for sanctity which the Church has solemnly confirmed. It would be difficult to speak too highly of this little book or of its author. In soundness of teaching, sublimity of thought, clearness of expression, and beauty of illustration, we do not know of a spiritual writer that surpasses Henry Suso.ºÐfrom the introduction by C. H. Translating Rubén Darío's Azul…
Translating Rubén Darío’s Azul… A Purpose and a Method Adam Michael Karr Chesapeake, Virginia B.S. International History, United States Military Academy at West Point, 2005 A thesis presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for a Degree of Master of Arts English Department University of Virginia May, 2014 TABLE OF CONTENTS Thesis Text……….3-47 References………..48-50 Appendix A: “Stories in Prose”………51-88 Appendix B: “The Lyric Year”……….89-116 2 George Umphrey opens the preface of his 1928 edited assortment of Rubén Darío’s prose and poetry with the familiar type of panegyric that begins much of the dissemination and exegesis of Darío’s work – “No apology is needed for [this] publication…he is one of the great poets of all time.” To Umphrey it was nothing more than a quip and a convenient opening statement. Darío had passed away just 12 years earlier but his posterity was assured. The Nicaraguan modernista poet has inspired an entire academic and publishing industry in Spanish language literature that is analogous to Milton or Dickens in English.1 He has had every possible commendation lavished on his legacy, is credited with revolutionizing the Spanish language, dragging it out of two centuries of doldrums following the glorious “Golden Age” of Cervantes and Lope de Vega, and creating the ethos and the identity for an independent Spanish America that would later inspire Borges, Neruda, and García-Márquez. Umphrey had no reason to doubt that any reproduction and exploration of Darío’s work, regardless of language, would be self- justifying, but he unwittingly makes assumptions about the future of language study in universities, priorities and structure in literature departments, the publishing industry and commercial audience, and a myriad of other contextual factors that would complicate Darío’s legacy. -
