Plaichinger war Werkstoffchemiker bei BMW und gehörte seit den frühen 1920er Jahren zum Kern der Münchner NSDAP. Plaichinger wurde auf Wankel durch dessen Engagement in der militärischen Jugendausbildung aufmerksam. Keppler sollte später zu ei- nem der größten Förderer Wankels werden, deren Beziehung auch nach dem Kriege fortdauerte. Keppler sollte für Wankel zahllose Kontakte zur Industrie, vor, während und nach dem Krieg herstellen. Diese Kon- takte ermöglichten es, Entwicklungsaufträge zu gewinnen und sich einen Namen als Erfinder zu machen, Auch der spätere Kontakt zu NSU, die in einer Kooperation und schließlich in der Produktion der legendären Ro 80 mit Kreiskolbenmotor münden sollte, geht auf eine Initiative Kepplers zurück. 1927 Mit Wankels Firma PAKIH geht es weiter bergauf Der „Teufelskäfer“ wurde weiter entwickelt und mit einem selbst gebauten Getriebe ausgestattet. Die Auf- tragslage war zufriedenstellend. Auch die Entwicklung von Drehschiebersteuerungen wurde erfolgreich vo- rangetrieben. Erstes Patent Wankels für einen Kreiskolbenmotor 1927 Auf Drängen Plaichingers ließ sich Wankel seine Entwürfe für den Kreiskolbenmotor patentieren. Dies war im Jahre 1927 noch gescheitert; im Jahre 1929 hielt Wankel sein erstes Patent für einen Kreiskolbenmotor in Händen. 1931 Wankel wird Gauleiter der Hitlerjugend in Baden Wankel hatte das Amt kaum ein Jahr inne. Er entwarf in dieser Zeit ein innovatives Dokumentationssystem für die gut 500 Mitglieder. Bald darauf stritt er sich mit dem badischen Gauleiter Robert Wanger um die Ausrichtung der Hitlerjugend. Wankel befürwortete eine technisch-mlitärische Jugendausbildung innerhalb der NSDAP, Wagner jedoch eine politische. Der Streit eskalierte und Wagner erkannte Wankel das Amt als badischer Gauleiter der Hitlerjugend bald darauf wieder ab. Umzug nach Lahr 1931 Seine Mutter konnte Wankels Zimmer nicht mehr zahlen, so dass er zu ihr nach Lahr zog. Dennoch arbeitete er weiterhin in der Heidelberger Werkstatt. 1932 Wankel wird aus der NSDAP ausgeschlossen Nachdem Wankel sich immer mehr mit dem Gauleiter Wagner überworfen und ihm schließlich öffentlich unterstellte, an fortgeschrittener Syphilis zu leiden, wurde er im Oktober 1932 aus der NSDAP ausgeschlos- sen. Eine erfolgreiche Freilassung konnte jedoch erst sein Bekannter Wilhelm Keppler erreichen. Dieser war Wirt- schaftsberater von Adolf Hitler geworden. Keppler überzeugte Hitler, Wankel freizulassen. Hitler sendete im September 1933 ein persönliches Telegramm an Gauleiter Wagner und forderte ihn auf, Wankel auf- grund seiner technischen Leistungen sofort freizulassen. 1934 Wankels Mutter stirbt an Krebs 1934 Wanklels erster großer Industrieauftrag Drehschiebersteuerungen von Wankel Wankel sollte Drehschiebersteuerungen für BMW-Flugzeugmotoren entwickeln. Wankel sammelt seine al- ten Weggefährten aus der Heidelberger Werkstatt um sich. Gemeinsam gründen sie einen neuen Betrieb in einem Nebengebäude des von der Mutter vererbten Hauses in Lahr. Bei der Erprobung von Dreh- und Walzschiebersteuerungen für BMW-Flugzeugmotoren und bei der Arbeit an Kolbenringen gewann Wankel neue Erkenntnisse. Verschiedene Patente folgten. Schierigkeiten hatte Wankel nur beim Rotationskolben- motor DKM 32. Der außenachsige Motor war nach einem anderen Prinzip als der später erfolgreiche DKM 54 konstruiert. Drei parallel liegende Achsen trugen rotierende Arbeits- und Steuerkolben. Letztendlich er- wies sich die Weiterentwicklung des DMK 32 aber als aussichtslos. 1934 Kooperation mit der Deutschen Versuchsanstalt für Flugzeugbau DVL Über eine Initiative seines Förderers Keppler erlangte Wankel die Aufmerksamkeit von zwei Ingenieuren des DVL. Durch seine Dichtungen konnten vom DVL entwickelte Drehschiebersteuerungen einsatzfähig gemacht werden. Dadurch wurden seitens des DVL große Hoffnungen in Wankel gesetzt und er erhielt reichliche Fördergelder. Ein Angebot für eine Anstellung beim DVL schlug er aus. Nach weiteren Verhand- lungen erhielt er einen Blankoscheck für die Errichtung eines eigenen Forschungsinstitutes an einem Ort seiner Wahl. Er ging nach Lindau. Wankel ging besonders wegen seiner Liebe zum Bootsbau nach Lindau. Er suchte nach einem Grundstück mit Seezugang, wollte aber nicht im Herrschaftsbereich des badischen Gauleiters bleiben. Daher zog es Wankel ins Bayerische. Wankel bezog Werkshallen in der Bregenzer Straße 152, welche die DVL für ihn pachteten. So entstanden die WVW, die Wankel-Versuchs-Werkstät- ten. Wieder begleiteten ihn seine Freunde Paul Kind, Albert Melasch, Edmund Holdmann und Arthur Kirn und dessen Schwester Emma, mit der Wankel zwischenzeitlich verlobt war. 1936 Wankel heiratet seine Frau Emma Nachdem seine Verhältnisse gesichert waren, baute er für sich und seine Frau ein Wohnhaus in der Bre- genzer Straße 82, in dem er bis zu seinem Tod 1988 wohnen blieb. Hauptarbeitsgebiet der WVW blieben zunächst die Drehschiebersteuerungen für Flugzeugmotoren. 1939 Prototyp für ein Schnellboot, „Zisch 39“, wird über den Bodensee geschleppt Zisch 42 vor der Silhouette Lindaus Der „Zisch 39“ war ein Versuchtsträger für Gleitflächenboote. Der Nachfolger „Zisch 42“ erweckte das Inte- resse von Waffen-SS und Marine. Der „Zisch 42“ wurde mit einem 23 PS-Motor ausgestattet und erreichte ca. 60 km/h. Später wurde mit positivem Ergebnis geprüft, ob der Zisch mit Torpedos ausgestattet werden konnte. Gedacht war er als schnelles und wendiges Boot in Ergänzung von Schnell- und Torpedobooten. 1940 Massenhafte Erprobung der Drehschiebersteuerung Stuka mit Wankel´schen Für die DVL/WVW-Drehschiebersteuerungen wurden mit Auto-Union, Hanomag und NSU Optionsverträge Drehschiebersteuerungen geschlossen, mit Daimler-Benz stand man in Verhandlungen. Forschungskooperationen mit verschiedenen Universitäten und Instituten folgten. Die Drehschiebersteuerungen für Flugzeugmotoren wurden auch von BMW und Daimler-Benz erprobt. Auch im „KdF“-Wagen wurden Drehschiebersteuerungen von Wankel ge- testet. Aus der Zeit zwischen 1936 und 1945 liegen knapp dreißig Patente vor. 1940 Aufnahme in die SS als SS-Obersturmbannführer Besondere Aktivitäten Wankels im Rahmen seiner SS-Mitgliedschaft sind nicht bekannt. Die SS zog im Jahre 1941 bei der NSDAP Erkundigungen ein, weshalb Wankel damals aus der Partei ausgeschlossen wurde.     ENRESO WORLD - ILab Different Car Engine Types Istas René Graduated in Automotive Technologies 1-1-2019 1 4 - STROKE ENGINE A four-stroke (also four-cycle) engine is an internal combustion (IC) engine in which the piston completes four separate strokes while turning the crankshaft. A stroke refers to the full travel of the piston along the cylinder, in either direction. The four separate strokes are termed: 1. Intake: Also known as induction or suction. This stroke of the piston begins at top dead center (T.D.C.) and ends at bottom dead center (B.D.C.). In this stroke the intake valve must be in the open position while the piston pulls an air-fuel mixture into the cylinder by producing vacuum pressure into the cylinder through its downward motion. The piston is moving down as air is being sucked in by the downward motion against the piston. 2. Compression: This stroke begins at B.D.C, or just at the end of the suction stroke, and ends at T.D.C. In this stroke the piston compresses the air-fuel mixture in preparation for ignition during the power stroke (below). Both the intake and exhaust valves are closed during this stage. 3. Combustion: Also known as power or ignition. This is the start of the second revolution of the four stroke cycle. At this point the crankshaft has completed a full 360 degree revolution. While the piston is at T.D.C. (the end of the compression stroke) the compressed air-fuel mixture is ignited by a spark plug (in a gasoline engine) or by heat generated by high compression (diesel engines), forcefully returning the piston to B.D.C.

The Wankel engine simulation and prediction of its performance is still limited. The current work reviews rotary engine’s flow field inside the combustion chamber with different commercial software used. It studies different parameters effect on the performance of the engine, such as the effect of the recess sizes and the shape-factor.     History of Major Automotive Developments 1920-1940 - The main components of the cars were well designed and efficient, and a variety of accessories were introduced, such as reversing lights, radios, automatic chokes, windshield wipers, and chrome-plated trim. Since World War II, most commercial vehicles are fitted with the magnetic speedometer, which was originally developed in the 1920s. Tires, until the 1920s, were of narrow cross-section and ran at relatively high air pressures. As technology improved tires and they were made wider, they operated at lower pressures. The tire alone would not provide much comfort, however. Between the wheel and the body of the car it is necessary to have springs. Some carriages had had the body suspended by straps from the chassis ends, but the semi-elliptical multi-leaf spring was an early development. Leaf springs are still widely used on cars, especially on the rear axles. Early "shocks" were of the friction type, often consisting of a simple pivoted arm attached to the axle so that its movement turned friction discs like a clutch. Between WWI and WWII, several very high quality cars were built, and some of these represented such an exceptionally high standard of craftsmanship and durability that, owing to changing economic circumstances, it is unlikely that cars of comparable quality will ever be built again. These include such classics as the Bugatti "Royale," Hispano-Suiza, Rolls- Royce "Phantom III," Bentley 8 litre, and the Delage. In America the trend was to power and luxury, while European manufacturers concentrated on small, low-priced cars like the Austin 7 in England, and the Italian Fiat 500.

    WANKEL ENGINE Wankel Engine in Deutsches Museum Munich, Germany The Wankel rotary engine is a type of internal combustion engine, invented by German engineer Felix Wankel, which uses a rotor instead of reciprocating pistons. This design promises smooth high-rpm power from a compact, lightweight engine; Criticism Wankel engines however are criticized for poor fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions. Naming Since its introduction in the NSU Motorenwerke AG (NSU) and Mazda cars of the 1960s, the engine has been commonly referred to as the rotary engine, a name which has also been applied to several completely different engine designs. Although many manufacturers licensed the design, and Mercedes-Benz used it for their C-111 concept car, only Mazda has produced Wankel engines in large numbers. As of 2005, the engine is only available in the Mazda RX-8. How it works The Wankel cycle. The "A" marks one of the three apexes of the rotor. The "B" marks the eccentric shaft, turning three times for every revolution of the rotor. In the Wankel engine, the four strokes of a typical Otto cycle engine are arranged sequentially around an oval, unlike the reciprocating motion of apiston engine. In the basic single rotor Wankel engine, a single oval (technically an epitrochoid) housing surrounds a three-sided rotor (a Reuleaux triangle) which turns and moves within the housing. The sides of the rotor seal against the sides of the housing, and the corners of the rotor seal against the inner periphery of the housing, dividing it into three combustion chambers. As the rotor turns, its motion and the shape of the housing cause each side of the rotor to get closer and farther from the wall of the housing, compressing and expanding combustion chamber similarly to the "strokes" in a reciprocating engine.

In 1921 he joined the Heidelberg branch of the Deutschvölkischer Schutz und Trutzbund and in 1922 he became a member of the NSDAP, the National Socialist German Workers Party (or "Nazi Party") , which was banned soon afterwards. Wankel founded and led youth groups associated with a cover-up organization of the NSDAP. With them he conducted paramilitary training, scouting games and night walks. When his high esteem for technical innovations was not widely shared among the German Youth Movement, he was offered instead the opportunity to talk about the issue of technology and education to Adolf Hitler and other leading National Socialists in 1928. In the meantime Wankel's mother had helped founding the local chapter of the NSDAP in his hometown Lahr. Here Wankel not only rejoined the party in 1926, but also met Gauleiter Robert Heinrich Wagner. In 1931 Wagner entrusted Wankel with the leadership of the Hitler Youth in Baden.

    Wankel Rotary Engine A cut-away of a Wankel engine shown at the Deutsches Museum inMunich, Germany The Mazda RX-8, a sports car powered by a Wankel engine Norton Classic air-cooled twin-rotor motorcycle The Wankel engine is a type of internal combustion engine using a rotary design to convert pressure into rotating motion. Over the commonly used piston designs the rotary engine delivers advantages of: simplicity, smoothness, compactness, high RPM and a high power to weight ratio. All parts rotate moving in one direction as opposed to the common piston engine which has pistons violently changing direction. Its four stroke cycle occurs in a moving combustion chamber between the inside of an oval-like epitrochoid-shaped housing and a rotor that is similar in shape to a reuleaux triangle with sides that are somewhat flatter. The rotary engine has the unique advantages of compact design and low weight over the most commonly used internal combustion engine which employs reciprocating pistons Mazda and NSU signed a study contract to develop the rotary engine in 1961 and competed to bring the first rotary powered automobile to market. Mazda displayed two and four rotor Wankel engines at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show. Mazda's first rotary engine car was the 1967 Cosmo 110S. The company followed with a number of rotary vehicles, including a bus and a pick up truck. Customers often cited the cars' smoothness of operation. However, Mazda chose a method to comply with hydrocarbon emission standards that, while less expensive to produce, increased fuel consumption, unfortunately immediately prior to a sharp rise in fuel prices.
