NOV. 10, 1982 TWENTY-FOUR PAGES Happy Birthday Marines Birthday messages It's my honor as commander-in- chief to extend congratulations to the United States Marines on their 207th anniversary. As Marines,, you're upholding an honored tradition stretching back through our history to 1775. Your motto, "Semper Fidelis" - always faithful - says it all. Whenever and wherever our country is needed, you were there, from riggings of ships during the American Revolution to the brutal island battlefields of the second world war. As we celebrate your birthday, your fellow Marines stand watch in Beirut. Their mission in the finest tradition of the corps is that of peacekeepers. Today, we peace is understand that through strength , ' , more than a slogan. In a world such as ours it's a moral necessity .96,* and in the tough job of preserving the peace and defending our nation's independence and freedom, the United States Marines agr have always been there, ready to do their duty. I'm grateful for this opportunity to thank all of you for upholding this noble mission. Whether on the land, sea or air, you're making your family, friends and country safer by what you do. This is a precious gift and we're grateful for it. So, to the United States Marines, Happy Birthday, congratulations, and carry on. President Ronald Reagan Greetings to the world's most elite fighting force on the occasion of your 207th birthday. You may be justifiably proud that your enduring reputation for military professionalism, for courage and valor, for honor, and for your famed spirit is not surpassed by any military organization in the world. None. For you, "first to fight" and "semper fidelis" are not mere slogans. They are the essence of the Marines, high standards of morale, training, and readiness. They are the essence of each Marine. As your fellow Marines ashore in Lebanon have again - as so often in the past - spearheaded America's continued efforts in pursuit of world peace, you may reflect on a magnificent history spanning over two centuries. Your fellow Americans are most grateful for the sacrifices that you and your families have made in the past, and are making today in a turbulent world of swiftly changing and often threatening conditions. Never before have the exemplary qualities of the Marine Corps been more important to America than they are today. It is with the deepest pride and respect that I send these greetings to each Marine. I want you to know I consider it a high honor to serve with such a peerless organization. Happy Birthday to each of you, and to each member of your families - Marines all. Arrugah. John Lehman, ...secretary of the Marine Corps Adesweissiehessesiesielv We, who are Marines, are the most fortunate of American men and women. We are entrusted with the privilege of service in a Corps unsurpassed in valor, fidelity, and success. In the two hundred seven years of our history, Marines have responded to protect the nation's interest - from Nassau to Lebanon and every clime and place between. On this special day, as always, those who rely on us can be confident that, if needed, we are ready. As we celebrate this birthday, I can propose no more appropriate words than those which have characterized Marines since 1775, and which I am certain will continue to distinguish Marines for generations to come SEMPER FIDELIS! - R.H. Born in Washington, D.C., on November 6, 1854, Sousa followed in the footsteps of his father, a musician in the U.S. Marine Corps, and enlisted by the age of 14. Before this, Sousa had studied violin with John Esputa. While active in the Marines, he composed his first march, "Salutation." Around the age of 16, Sousa began studying harmony with G.F. Benkert, then worked as a pit orchestra conductor at a local theater, followed by jobs as first chair violinist at the Ford Opera House, the Philadelphia Chestnut Street Theater, and later led the U.S. Marine Corps Band (1880- 1992). Although most famous for his marches, Sousa composed in other styles as well, including a waltz, "Moonlight on the Potomac"; a gallop, "The Cuckoo" (both in 1869); the oratorio "Messiah of the Nations" (1914); and scores for Broadway musicals The Smugglers (1879), Desiree (1884), The Glass Blowers (1893), El Capitan (1896; which was his first real scoring success), American Maid (1913), and more.
