Nonprofit ON POINT Letter from the President MORE THAN A DECADE OF CONFLICT has placed an unprecedented burden on our Nation’s Marine families. The current generation of veterans has experienced unusually long and frequent deployments; the stress of these deployments leaves a lasting impact. Many of these Marines have young children. Others have returned home to start their families. Whether their children are graduating from high school today or decades from now, our mission remains to provide them with steadfast, faithful assistance, both today and in the future. To that end, we are proud to announce the launch of the $100,000,000 Phase II of the American Patriots Campaign (total campaign goal $160,000,000), an initiative designed to meet the critical future needs of our Marine families. Our ambitious goals are inspired by the following: Margaret B. Davis President and CEO • Our students are highly successful in their educational endeavors, graduating at a rate more than double the national average. 42 percent of them are studying science, technology, engineering, and math—areas critical for our country’s economic growth. • The increasing cost of higher education is outpacing the average military family income growth, making post-high school education financially unattainable for many of our military children without your help. Read more about the campaign, and how you can help, on page 4. While many of our Marines and Corpsmen are finally coming home, their journeys and challenges are just beginning. As the Nation’s oldest and largest provider of scholarships to military children, it is our mission to Honor Marines by Educating Their Children today, and for generations to come. In the spirit of Semper Fidelis, Margaret B. Davis President and CEO Scholarship recipient Antonio Mayo, a communications major at Fayetteville University in North Carolina, pictured with his mother, Sergeant Major Yolanda Mayo USMCR. Antonio and his sister, Sydney, are both scholarship recipients. Nearly 80 percent of Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation recipients graduate from bachelor’s degree programs; the national graduation rate is 31 percent. 2 Student Profile Jeremy Davies I have always looked up to the qualities my father had, the values that were instilled in him by the United States Marine Corps. Nyland,…Thank you for your contributions to this country and making it possible for me to attend college and accomplish my dreams. It is my hope that I am able to accomplish something as worthy and amazing as 37 years’ service in the United States Marines. There [are no] words that can express the gratitude I feel…. Without the aid of [this] scholarship, my future would seem a lot less promising. Thank you so much to all those who made this possible. Sincerely, Jeremy Davies 3 Phase of theAmerican Patriots Campaign At the beginning of June, the 2013 American Patriots Campaign Leadership Cabinet Summit provided an opportunity for investors, Marine Corps leadership, and scholarship recipients to connect and celebrate the successes of the American Patriots Campaign. AMERICAN PATRIOTS CAMPAIGN In early 2007, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation kicked off the first phase of the American Patriots Campaign with a $50,000,000 goal by 2012, the Scholarship Foundation’s 50th anniversary year. Due to overwhelming support, that goal was increased to $60,000,000 in 2011. Thanks to generous support across the country, the Campaign exceeded its goal, raising $62,000,000, and retains tremendous AmericanAmerican Patriots Patriots Campaign Campaign momentum. Recognizing the increasing needs of our Nation’s PhasePhase II andand II II Combined Combined Goal Goal. Marine families and anticipating the future needs of today’s Marine children, the Scholarship Foundation has announced Phase II of the campaign, with a $100,000,000 additional goal through 2016, for a total goal of $160,000,000. The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan represent more than a decade of combat for America, which has had stressful and lasting impacts on our Nation’s Marine families. Many of today’s active-duty Marine families include young children, many of whom are just now experiencing peacetime. The Scholarship Foundation’s ambitious $100,000,000 goal will help secure post-high school education funding for generations of Marine and Navy Corpsman dependents. It will allow the Scholarship Foundation to continue to increase both the number of scholarships awarded, and the amount awarded, each year. At the Summit, rising freshman David Baird APC LEADERSHIP CABINET SUMMIT was awarded the Commandant’s Scholarship in Honor of James F. Amos USMC. When I was 10, my father died in Iraq, and it shattered my world. I did not know how to continue to grow and learn without his important influence in my life…. My dad always gave 100 percent in everything he did, and I have tried to emulate this in my own life. My father’s death has driven me to succeed and uphold myself to greatness in order to pay tribute to his memory. Despite my overwhelming circumstances, and through all my hard work and commitment, I was accepted into my dream school!
