January 31, 2005 SUBJECT: 2 FROM THE BOARD A MONTHLY SUMMARY OF BOARD HIGHLIGHTS AND DECISIONS January 2005 Acting Director appointed by TCDSB John Guyatt, Deputy Director and Chief Financial Officer of the Board, has been appointed as Acting Director until such time as an Interim Director can be appointed. Revised policies approved The Board has approved a revised permit policy, which will be posted on the Board’s website at http://www.tcdsb.org/policyregister/B.R.05,%20Permits%20Policy.pdf. The Board has also approved a revised Playground Equipment Policy, which can be viewed at: http://www.tcdsb.org/policyregister/BG01.html. Catholic Missions of Canada The Board has indicated its support for the Catholic Missions of Canada awareness campaign. The week of May 23rd will be declared Catholic Missions of Canada Week within TCDSB schools. Support for “Get Off Your Buttathon” The TCDSB is supporting the Canadian Diabetes Association in promoting the “Get Off Your Buttathon” event in all TCDSB schools. Information about the activity from the Canadian Diabetes Association will be distributed to all schools. Approval has been given to the Association to approach TCDSB schools regarding rallies and other assemblies for the event. Board approves Borrowing By-law #156 The Board has approved Borrowing By-law #156 which authorizes the Board to maintain a sixty-five million dollar ($65,000,000) demand operating line of credit. Board to investigate acquisition of St. Joseph’s College School At the Administrative and Corporate Services Committee meeting of the Board held on Monday, January 17, 2005, the Board of Trustees agreed to investigate the acquisition of St. Joseph’s College School from the Sisters of St. Joseph. A letter was sent to the community on January 20th. The CUPE 1328 – OCT Collective Agreement, Article 16.15, provides employees the opportunity of participating in a DSP. The Board will grant leaves of absence of one year to CUPE 1328 – OCT employees on the basis of spreading four (4) years’ salary over five (5) years. Any permanent full-time CUPE 1328 – OCT employees who have completed at least two (2) years employment with the Board are eligible. Application forms are now available from the Human Resources Department and must be returned to Linda Moynagh, Supervisor, Human Resources Department, on or before March 1, 2005. The CUPE 1280 Collective Agreement, Article 16.12, provides Custodial and Trades & Maintenance employees the opportunity of participating in a DSP. The Board will grant leaves of absence of one year to custodial and trades & maintenance employees on the basis of spreading 4 years salary over 5 years. Any permanent full-time custodial or trades & maintenance employees who have completed at least two (2) years employment with the Board are eligible. Application forms are now available from Human Resources and must be returned to HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT, ATTENTION: LINDA MOYNAGH, SUPERVISOR - SUPPORT STAFF, on or before March 1, 2005. To request a DSP application form, please call Agnes Leung – Human Resources extension 2335. Further details of the DSP are outlined in Article 16.12 of the CUPE Local 1280 Collective Agreement SUBJECT: 4 TO ALL EMPLOYEES 25-YEAR EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION PROGRAM WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE 25-YEAR EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION PROGRAM? Any employee with 25 years of service with the Board as of December 31, 2004 is eligible to participate in the program. Please refer to Policy H.M.09. Service may be full-time, broken or unbroken, and include leaves of absence and pregnancy leaves. The Board, at the meeting of November 16, 1989, approved the eligibility purposes. YES/AGREE = 29.51 % I agree you should attend your closest high school, however when different programs are offered at different schools, then grade 8 students should be given the option of attending those schools if those programs fit their educational choice. This if fine as long as the school in the child's area is a "regular" high school, I would feel sorry for children who are forced to attend a high school like Mary Ward where the kids learn at their own pace without the same level of instruction that regular high schools offer. Only excellent learners can excel in a school like that. Agree with have option based on home address NO/DISAGREE = 69.46% Taking away the choice from parents is arrogant. Forcing students to schools will only push them to the public board or private schools. Shame on us for this type of arrogance! This process is very restrictive and eliminates choice for the student to select a school that is best suited for their individual needs and interests. The proposed changes does not offer best fit for each individual student.
