Faith Journey 10-day Pilgrimage Day 1: Toronto/Tel Aviv “Leave your country…for the land I will show you” Ger 12:1. Today is taken up with our physical journey to the Bible lands. This pilgrimage reminds us of our own continuous journey towards God. Today we step forward with the same kind of faith lived by Abraham and Sarah as they set our on their journey. The road to Jerusalem is in the heart – every place is holy ground. Day 2: Israel – Nazareth Peter said, “I am the man you are looking for, why have you come?” Acts 10:21. Shalom! Arrival at Ben Gurion Airport and travel via the Plain of Sharon and Caesarea with its theatre and aqueducts to overnight in Nazareth, the home town of the Holy Family. Day 3: Lower Galilee “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light” Isaiah 9:2. Our first day in Galilee begins in Nazareth, Jesus’ home. We celebrate Eucharist in the Church of the Annunciation and visit Cana, place of Jesus’ first public ministry. Then we renew our Baptismal promises at Yardenit on the River Jordan before going to our hotel on the Sea of Galilee. Day 4: The Sea of Galilee “Jesus left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea” Matt 4:13. We cross the Sea of Galilee by boat and arrive in Capernaum, where Jesus began his ministry of healing and teaching. We spend some reflective time sitting on the Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus taught the qualities of the Kingdom of God. Then we visit Bethsaida, the home of many of the first disciples of Jesus and drive to Mount Tabor, site of the Transfiguration. Day 5 Around the Lake We begin our final morning in Galilee with Mass on the seashore at Tabgha, site of the feeding of the 5,000 and complete the morning at the church of the Primacy. Here the Risen Christ cooked breakfast for his disciples and reinstated Peter as leader of the group. Day 6: Galilee/Jerusalem via Masada “I will lead her into the desert and speak to her heart” Hos 2:14. We drive by Qumran to Masada, Herod’s palace and Zealot stronghold during the first century revolt against the Romans. Afterwards we enjoy time in the Dead Sea. Then we set out for Jerusalem. En route we follow the Jordan valley and pass through Jericho. Turning eastward onto the Judean wilderness, we climb Wadi Qelt and stop at the Valley of the Shadow of Death. We enter Jerusalem by the Mount of Olives. . “I rejoiced when I heard them say: Let us go the house of the Lord” Psalm 122. Day 7: Bethlehem and the Old City We celebrate Mass at Shepherd’s Field, then visit Bethlehem and the basilica of the Nativity. We return to Jerusalem and walk around the Old City with visits to the Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock, and the Church of St. Anne. Day 8: From the Upper Room to Calvary “Having loved his own who were in the world, Jesus loved them to the end” John 13:1 Today we journey the Last Days of Jesus. We celebrate the Eucharist in the Cenacle, the room of the Last Supper. From here we travel down the Palm Sunday Road to the Garden of Gethsemane, and then carry the cross up the Via Dolorosa finishing in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Day 9 Emmaus/Ein Karem “They told what had happened on the road” Luke 24:35. We journey to Ein Karem, birthplace of St John the Baptist and site of the Visitation. Then we celebrate mass in Emmaus before our return to Jerusalem and our final celebration of Pentecost in the Upper Room. Day 10 Tel Aviv/Toronto We take a morning flight back home returning filled with the Holy Spirit – renewed and recharged to tell everyone “all the things that happened on the road and how we recognized him in the breaking of the Bread”.

Just as perfume leaves an odour in the jar after it has been poured out, so God has left traces of his presence in the Holy Land. Tom Rosica

Staff are to cost out the other items in the union’s position for consideration in the budget for 2005-2006. Staff are to initiate a review of the job descriptions of all secretarial staff in elementary and secondary schools. They are also to report back to the Board on the type of help that could be provided to school secretaries during the busy month of June.

Extended French Program to be phased out at Annunciation The Board has approved a recommendation to phase out the Extended French Program at Annunciation Catholic School beginning in September 2005. According to the report, a total of 80 students were enrolled in the grades 5-8 program for the 2004-2005 school year. The downward trend in enrolment is reflected in the lack of students attending the program from other schools in the area, and from within the school. Although the number of students registered on April 30th for the grade 5 Extended French Program for September stands at 20, it would be difficult to maintain that enrolment through to grade 8. Those students who have expressed an interest in taking grade 5 Extended French, will be given the option to take the program at the closest Extended French Centre.

School remembers 'beautiful' girl Fundraiser being held in memory of Taylor Gordon Scarborough Mirror, June 3, 2005 DAVID NICKLE

Taylor Gordon had only been at St. Brendan School for a few months before she died last December - but the severely-disabled junior kindergarten student left a profound impression among students and staff alike. "She had a huge impact - particularly with students who had an opportunity to interact with her," said Olimpia Crosby, vice-principal of the West Hill Roman Catholic elementary school. "She had big, beautiful eyes and the children were just drawn to her.

They knew she couldn't talk, but they would talk to her and ask open-ended questions. She loved to have her hand held or stroked and even the children in the junior kindergarten class loved to be paired up with her."

Taylor, who was classed as Globally Delayed, was unable to eat, talk or move without assistance - and when she died from complications arising from her condition, the school felt her absence.

That's why starting this week, the student body has decided to do something special in her honour: raise funds to help rebuild an Indonesian school for disabled children that was levelled in last December's tsunami.

"We had planned to make a mural to remember her but it seemed appropriate that we found a charity for special needs to help in her honour," said Crosby.

The school is operated by the Yayasan Nur Abadi Foundation, a name which translates into Eternal Light. To raise money, the students will be participating in a run-a-thon in Centennial Park June 16. Today (Friday, June 3) they are holding a pep rally and para-liturgy.

CSA Video Conference at Transfiguration by Chani Gatto-Bradshaw Grade 8 Congregated Gifted Transfiguration of Our Lord

On Friday, May 20th 2005 the TCDSB succeeded in conducting our first live video conference at Transfiguration of Our Lord Catholic School with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). Although miles and miles away, our internet connection allowed us to partake in activities live with the Canadian Space Agency on RADARSAT technology.

To conduct the partnership took over two months of testing and preparation. The first set-up and dry run system matches were difficult. But after hard work on behalf of the TCDSB technology department the link was successful. Many thanks to the CSA and Louisa Caporuscio, CSA Communications Officer, who was able to lend us the Tandberg 550 videoconference system in order to overcome streaming difficulty between the two systems. It provided amazing image quality, video and sound. This opportunity to share with and plan an effective and curriculum-relevant session meet students needs.

Forty students from Transfiguration of Our Lord in the 6, 7, and 8 Congregated Gifted Program classes greatly enjoyed a two-hour presentation on “Reading and Understanding Radar Images.” Mr. Stéphane Coté, a scientist from the Canadian Space Agency, led us through with an introduction to radars, reading radar images, and applications to storm readings. This live broadcast gave an opportunity to report back topographic findings. Mr. Cote was able to respond to questions live and provided a power point and clarified feedback through the presentation materials.

The end result was 40 captivated students. This is an amazing example of what the possibilities of technology can offer education. This one connection through the internet ended off with an exhilarating amount of knowledge provided first hand by professionals. We all really enjoyed it! Hopefully the future will bring more successful ventures through our CSA partnership.

Thanks to Mr. Quentin D’Sousa for facilitating the technological side and our teacher Arlene Martin, a teacher at Transfiguration school, who has participated in a number of the Educator Training Events at the Canadian Space Agency during the summers that helped prepare her for this type of videoconference.

This year’s Educator’s Conference event takes place from August 9 to 11, 2005 at the John H. Chapman Space Centre in Longueuil, Quebec. The conference fee is $25 and attendees are responsible for their own travel, food and accommodation. For more information: http://www.space.gc.ca/asc/eng/educators/ .Don’t forget to order your FREE “Science of Spacesuits CD-ROM” while you are there. http://www.space.gc.ca/asc/eng/educators/spacesuit_form.asp

The videoconference could not have taken place without Arlene Martin (Transfiguration), the teachers at Transfiguration, Margaret Izzo-Dolson, Maria Fantauzzi, Keith Chung(Computer Services), Louisa Capruscio(Canadian Space Agency) and Stéphane Coté (Canadian Space Agency) and the AICT Team.
