The genera covered in this treatment are those found in the lowland areas around Townsville as far north as Bluewater, south to Alligator Creek and west to the base of Hervey’s Range. Most of these genera will also be found in neighbouring areas although some genera not included may occur in specific habitats. The aim of this book is to provide a description of the grass genera as well as a list of species. The grasses belong to a very widespread and large family called the Poaceae. The original family name Gramineae is used in some publications, in Australia the preferred family name is Poaceae. It is one of the largest flowering plant families of the world, comprising more than 700 genera, and more than 10,000 species. In Australia there are over 1300 species including non-native grasses. In the Townsville area there are more than 220 grass species. The grasses have highly modified flowers arranged in a variety of ways. Because they are highly modified and specialized, there are also many new terms used to describe the various features. Hence there is a lot of terminology that chiefly applies to grasses, but some terms are used also in the sedge family. The basic unit of the grass inflorescence (The flowering part) is the spikelet. The spikelet consists of 1-2 basal glumes (bracts at the base) that subtend 1-many florets or flowers. -

However, a range of non-target environmental impacts eventuated from these introductions, including spatial displacement of indigenous ecosystems, and induced changes to soils and nutrient re-cycling. The accumulation in biomass of flammable and senescing grasses predisposes grassland and woodland ecosystems to increasing impacts from wildfires, threatening indigenous plants and animals, and the recovery after fires of natural ecosystems. Very few detritivores have adapted to feed on and decompose detritus from African grasses in Australia and the USA, resulting in accumulation of dead leaves and a build-up of fuel increasing the risks from wildfires. In grasslands and woodlands of the Northern Hemisphere, epigeic detritivores and leaf-shredders include groups of invertebrates such as earthworms and isopods. In Australia, larvae of leaf-shredding moths, beetles and several other insects are important detritivores including oecophorid moths, cryptocephaline beetles, termites and cockroaches; some specifically adapted to breakdown of sub-surface plant materials in dry and moist ecosystems. -

It is a predominantly flat land with several shallow depressions, which act as seasonal wetlands after monsoon and during winter its converts into sedge mixed grassland, an ideal dual ecosystem. An attempt was made to document ecology, biomass and community based assessment of grasses in Banni, we surveyed systematically and recorded a total of 49 herbaceous plant species, being used as fodder by livestock. In which, the maximum numbers of species (21 Nos.) were recorded in Echinocloa and Cressa habitat; followed by Sporobolus and Elussine habitat (20 species); and Desmostechia-Aeluropus and Cressa habiat (19 species). A total of 21 highest palatable species were recorded in Echinocloa-Cressa communities followed by Sporobolus-Elussine–Desmostechia (20 species and 18 palatable species) and Aeluropus–Cressa (19 species and 17 palatable species). For long-term conservation of Banni grassland, we also suggest a participatory co-management plan. Stone August 1988 clacmiIST OF VASCULAR PLANrs OF HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK The following checMist is a campilation of all previous lists of plants for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HAVO) since that published by Fagerlund and Mitchell (1944). Also included are observations not found in earlier lists. The current checklist contains names from Fagerlund and Mitchell (1944) , Fagerlund (1947), Stone (1959), Doty and Mueller-Dambois (1966), and Fosberg (1975), as well as listings taken fram collections in the Research Herbarium of HAVO and from studies of specific areas in the Park. The current existence in the Park of many of the listed taxa has not been confirmed (particularly ornamentals and ruderals). Plants listed by previous authors were generally accepted and included even if their location in HAVO is unknown to the present authors. Exceptions are a few native species erroneously included on previous HAVO checklists, but now known to be based on collections from elsewhere on the Island. Other omissions on the current list are plant names considered by St. John (1973) to be synonyms of other listed taxa. The most recent comprehensive vascular plant list for HAVO was done in 1966 (Ihty and Mueller-Dombois 1966). In the 22 years since then, changes in the Park boundaries as well as growth in botanical knowledge of the area have necessitated an updated checklist. -

Full copy of the Paper can be sourced from the Plant Protection Quarterly Vol 17(1) 2002 Summary A list of 200 invasive naturalised species was prepared as a working document for the compilation of an environmental weed list for southeast Queensland. Species were selected from the 1060 naturalised taxa and were ranked based upon invasiveness and frequency in non-agricultural areas. The list was compiled using records of 1413 vegetation sites, 10163 herbarium specimens and ranking scores of a thirteen member assessment panel. The study area was defined by the Southeast Queensland Environmental Weeds Strategy Working Group and was based on Local Government Areas. It covers in the North from Shires of Monto across to Miriam vale and down to the border. The task of distinguishing weeds of disturbance (ruderal) from weeds of natural areas (environmental) was addressed by categorising species invasiveness and referring to a panel of thirteen weed scientists and field botanists. The expert assessment panel included members of four organisations. Tom Anderson, Trevor Armstrong and Dane Panetta are weed scientists at Alan Fletcher Research Station, Department of Natural Resources and Mining. George Batianoff, Anthony Bean, Paul Forster, Ailsa Holland, Bill McDonald, Sue Phillips and Kathy Stephens are botanists at Queensland Herbarium, Environmental Protection Agency. Michael Olsen and John Swarbrick are environmental consultants representing private enterprise. Paul Grimshaw is a technical officer representing Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. -

Phillips Annuals or perennials, tufted or sometimes with creeping rhizomes or stolons. Leaf blades flat or rolled, linear to narrowly lanceolate; ligule a line of hairs. Inflorescence an open or contracted panicle, rarely spikelike. Spikelets with 1 floret, subterete, not compressed or keeled, glabrous; rachilla disarticulating above glumes; glumes usually shorter than lemma, unequal, membranous, deciduous or persistent, 1-veined or veinless, apex obtuse, acute or acuminate; lemma elliptic to narrowly ovate, thinly membranous, 1–3-veined, glabrous, rounded on back, awnless; palea equaling or shorter than lemma, depressed between veins and often splitting lengthways as grain grows. Stamens 2–3. Grain globose to ellipsoid, rounded or truncate, pericarp free, commonly swelling when wet and expelling the grain, which often adheres to spikelet apex. x = 9, 12. About 160 species: tropics and subtropics, extending into warm-temperate regions; eight species (one introduced) in China. Most species of this genus in China are fodder plants. The culms are used for weaving. A specimen (H. Y. Liang 64044, US) collected from sandy soil near the seashore of Hainan appears to be Sporobolus gloeoclados Cope (Kew Bull. 47: 656. 1992), from SW Asia, and is presumably an introduction. 1a. Genus Sporobolus Was Agrostis

Br. is 4 3 here In Malesia the genus Sporobolus (Gramineae) representedby sections, newly indicus has 5 1 and distinguished, with 10 species, 2 new. Sporobolus (L.) R. Br. varieties, new, var. (R. & Veldk., and var. 3 with a new rank: var. creber (De Nardi) Veldk., flaccidus S.) major Baaijens [S. creber De Nardi, S. diandrus (Retz.) Beauv., and S. fertilis (Steud.) Clayton, respective- S. laxus Simon from ly]. Some other non-Malesian taxa have also been reduced to varieties, e.g. Queensland (var. queenslandicus Veldk.), and S. pyramidalis Beauv. [var. pyramidalis (Beauv.) Veldk., incl. S. jacquemontii Kunth] from Africa and America. The Indian species generally known - S. as S. tremulus a superfluous name for S. virginicus (L.) Kunth -is reduced to a subspecies of humilis Presl. Sporobolus poiretii (R. & S.) Hitchc., long misapplied for S. indicus, is a synonym ofS. junceus (Beauv.) Kunth. Five new sections are distinguished. The correct name for Thysanolaena maxima (Roxb.) O. Ktze is T. latifolia (Roxb. ex Hornem.) Honda. Introduction The described R. Brown for three genus Sporobolus was by (1810) taxa repre- sented in his Australian collections which had previously been included in Agrostis close because is L. He regarded A. virginica L. as very (which was quite correct that but he retainedit in a species of Sporobolus as well), Agrostis, possibly because he had not seen any fruiting material (which is rare) and also because this species has exceptional long glumes.
