Spence, B.M., M.M., M.B.A. Denton, Texas December, 1995 Spence, Marcia Louise, Carl Nielsen's Quintet for Winds, Op. 43: A Critical Edition, A Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works for Horn by Atterberg, Ries, Mozart, Rosetti, Musgrave, Larsson, and Others. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), December, 1995, 143 pp., 14 examples, 3 appendices, bibliography, 29 titles. The purpose of this dissertation is to prepare and present a critical edition of Carl Nielsen's Quintet fbr Winds, Op. 43, a major work in the woodwind quintet repertoire. Written for the Copenhagen Wind Quintet in 1922, it is also considered a pivotal composition in Nielsen's artistic output. The only published edition of this piece, by Edition Wilhelm Hansen, is rife with errors, a consistent problem with many of Nielsen's compositions.

  • Baptismal Clothing from Immigrant Families, Which Opened May 28, Celebrates the Richness
America Letter THE DANISH IMMIGRANT MUSEUM An International Cultural Center August 1999 Box 470 • Elk Horn, Iowa 51531 Vol. XIII, No. 3 The exhibition, A Consecration of Hope: Baptismal Clothing from Immigrant Families, which opened May 28, celebrates the richness of the Museum’s textile collection The display fea- tures thirty-five small baptismal garments, plus bonnets and booties. Six of the garments are on loan; the rest are from the Museum’s perma- nent collection, at- testing to the range and extent of the Museum’s holdings, which are significant for a young institu- tion. Some of these garments have been worn by successive generations of babies. One of the beautiful dresses in the exhibit features hardan- ger inserts and was made from the donor’s mother’s wedding gown. on this baptismal dress are embroidered the names of 28 babies who have worn it over the years (see photo at right). The oldest garment in the exhibit is a lovely long dress with lace inserts that was made for a baptism in 1888 and has since been worn by two great grandchildren of that infant. another Christening outfit on display was worn for a baptism in Denmark. Years after that baby grew up and immigrated to the United States he returned to Denmark on a visit in 1938 and brought the garments back with him. They have since been worn by a great-grandchild. The over forty garments on display include baptismal dresses, slips, coats, bonnets, and booties. The love and skill that went into the mak- ing of these tiny garments is immediately apparent.

  • Carl Nielsen Studies 5 (2012)
EDITORIAL With a few exceptions, the contributions to this fi fth volume of Carl Nielsen Studies are revised and enlarged versions of papers presented at the international Carl Nielsen symposium, “Carl Nielsen. Inheritance and Legacy”, held in The Royal Library in Copen hagen in November 2011. The size of this issue, which is the largest CNS so far, is a token of the increasing interest abroad in Nielsen and his music, and it also marks the two most recent monographs on Nielsen in English – by Anne-Marie Reynolds and Daniel Grimley – through comprehensive reviews of both books. By agreement with our English publisher, Ashgate, and after having obtained permission from the authors, volumes 1-4 are now available, complete, on the inter- net through CNS’s home page (http://www.kb.dk/en/kb/nb/mta/cnu/cnstudies/index. html). Future volumes, including this one, will be available on line 12 months after their publication. The year 2015 will mark Nielsen’s 150th anniversary. To celebrate this, ambitious col- laborative plans have been made by a number of cultural and educational institu- tions in Denmark, including among others Radio Denmark, The Royal Academy of Music, The Royal Library, Odense City Museums, The Royal Theatre and all the profes- sional symphony orchestras in Denmark. As may be seen from the preliminary list below, the events will be directed at the general public (of all ages), including music students, music scholars and the wider musical world. At the time of writing the project envisages, among many ideas and visions, the
