Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 3 Estate George James Howden George Howden, a Life Member and long-time supporter, died in 2007 and in his Will he left the Club a generous bequest of $20,000. He also instructed Trustees Executors Ltd to set up a Deed of Arrangement to utilise the “residual” funds from his Estate, and invest them to provide a long-term income stream for our Club. The Estate was registered as a charitable entity by the Charities Commission on 30 June 2008. The Club at all times needs to be aware that the initial bequest and all subsequent income generated under the Deed may only be utilised by the Club for the following purposes: (a) The provision of coaching services at all grades; (b) the maintenance, upkeep and improvement of the grounds upon which the Club’s activities are centred or take place; (c) the provision of or improvement to the facilities and amenities of the Club, and (d) the general betterment of the Club as a whole, and the promotion of its interests. To ensure the income is so paid or applied in accordance with the terms of the Trust, it is a requirement that at all times there is an Advisory Committee of three persons who must give prior approval. Upon the death, retirement, resignation or removal from the office of any Advisory Committee member, the remaining two members will appoint another suitable person to fill the vacancy. The Advisory Committee shall make such rules and regulations to govern its functioning as it may determine and any such rules or regulations may from time to time be revoked, amended, replaced or modified with the unanimous approval of all Advisory Committee members. The first persons to hold office are Graham Thorne Dowling, Brian Charles Adams and Grant James Dickson. They, in conjunction with Trustees Executors, have, since 27 November 2009, embarked on a “conservative growth portfolio” strategy that both parties believe is in the best long term interests of the Club. At each balance date, annual accounts are prepared by Trustees Executors, and, once approved by the Advisory Committee, the net income, after setting aside an agreed percentage to add to the Trust Capital, shall be paid to the Club by Trustees Executors Ltd.

The remaining members of the current committee were re-standing for a further season: Paul O’Flaherty, John Thompson, Brett Thomson, Lee McKenzie, Ashley Taggart and Peter Burke. Best wishes and congratulations for Peter were received before the meeting and in absentia from Brian Hastings, Mark Shackleton, Trudy Anderson, Simon Packman, Andy Innes (Cricket Express) and Shane Eglington. General Business Graham Dowling commented on the Club’s ties with the University of Canterbury and expressed satisfaction that there was a competition last season within the University. Graham also noted the potential risk to the Club’s membership and relationship with the University arising from St Albans being based at Ilam Fields as a temporary post-earthquakes arrangement. Graham Dowling noted the post-earthquakes standards and constraints on buildings and queried how the Club was placed to manage this. Paul O’Flaherty replied that there is some strengthening (as opposed to remediation) required to comply with the new regulations. This is on the original downstairs section of the pavilion. These were subject to negotiations with FC2011 and its potential requirements for changes required to be taken undertaken so Senior Mainland grade games can be played at Burnside Park. Jerard Cross asked whether the club is required to have a women’s team for the club to play in Premier grade. Paul O’Flaherty responded that the Club is required only to provide a pathway for Junior girls to progress on to women’s cricket. The Club has plans to ensure this happens by signing an agreement with the Merivale Papanui Cricket Club, which does have women’s cricket.

8 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club Brian Adams enquired why some Club trophies had not been awarded in 2011/12: the J.S. Patrick Cup, the W.S. MacGibbon Trophy and the J.M. McEwan Trophy. Paul O’Flaherty answered that this was due to some dis-organisation relating to the immediate post-earthquakes period and normality would be restored for the 2012/13 awards. Paul O’Grady queried the naming of a member who had not paid his 2011/12 subscriptions in the Annual Report, and noted his disagreement with this practice, particularly on the title page. Paul O’Flaherty outlined why the Committee has instituted this practice as a last resort and that it was one of the consequences that had been advised in advance to club members. He undertook to consider Paul O’Grady’s feedback. Paul O’Grady requested clarification on some detailed aspects of the accounts and Doug Allcock responded. Paul O’Flaherty closed the meeting by welcoming attendees to stay for morning tea, and reminding them that Club Opening Day matches were being played in the afternoon. He noted that Honorary Membership forms were available for those who were not already members The meeting closed at 11.53am, after which Club Patron Graham Dowling was invited to open the new season.

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 9 OBITUARIES

TONY TIMPSON Tony Timpson, who died in Auckland on June 15 2013, was one of the most determined and gritty left-arm spin bowlers to ever play for the club, good enough to play for Canterbury B. He was a member of the senior team from 1956 until 1965 playing 70 matches and scoring 878 runs at 10.2; with the ball he bowled 10,250 balls and took 250 at 16.7. On ten occasions he took five wickets in an innings and once ten wickets in a match. Tony was the top taker in 1961/62 and 1962/63 with 51 and 41 wickets respectively and was club in 1961/62. As captain of the senior team in 1962/63 he said in a typical fortnight comment, “that the fielding was not a sight to capture the imagination and a high proportion of the players pondered their personal problems while contributing little of value to the movement on the field”. He had a sharp mind, enjoyed people and had a marvellous sense of humour well illustrated by a story from Peter Sharp in the 1980 jubilee history of the club. “Christchurch club cricket was exceedingly strong in the 1960s but according to Tony Timpson you waited until after lunch and then wrinkled them out. I couldn’t understand the logic of this strategy until lunch time on my first Saturday. Timpo asked whether I had any lunch. I said no and was invited to his car and thought that was very good of the skipper expecting to have ham and salad his wife had prepared. Astonishment scarcely describes my feelings as we walked through the doors of the Bush Inn and my elderly, wise captain ordered ”Three eights”. Apparently this was the form for most clubs and after lunch the spinners ran riot while everybody else snoozed”. Timpson returned to Christchurch in 1980 for the club’s 75th jubilee celebrations and at the conclusion of festivities made a substantial donation to the club. Timpson also played rugby for Canterbury University and later formed a social team, probably the first of its kind, called Timpson’s Tigers which toured Australia in 1965. The understanding was that there was to be no training but compulsory attendance at McKendry’s bar on the Friday night prior to the Saturday game.

10 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club After leaving University Timpson worked in Christchurch as a carpet salesman before he moved to Auckland in 1965 to work with Bremworth carpets. Later he went into partnership with two friends to form Cavalier Carpet Corporation, the highly successful carpet manufacturer which was to eventually have a staff of over 500 people. He was made an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2010 for his services to business and the community and at the time of his death he was ranked high in the NBR Rich List. Mike Crean captured his personality perfectly when he wrote “Timpson epitomised the dinkum Kiwi bloke, reliable, honest, generous, loyal, sociable and ready to give anything a go”. Brian Adams

TONY FARRANT Tony Farrant, who passed away on 9 March 2013, was every inch the club man. As a teenager, he would toil for hours in the Burnside nets to any senior batsman who was keen to work on his game. He later became a popular senior team member. He plied his trade as a demanding and economical right-arm medium-pace bowler who moved the ball around in the air and off the pitch. Tony played for Burnside West Christchurch University from 1976 to 1985. In the two day competition he played 71 matches and took 243 wickets at 17.4. He took a 5 wicket bag on nine occasions (7-46 against Sydenham was his best), and 10 wickets in a match once. He could also “hold a bat”, with 52 being his best score. In the one day format, Tony played 15 matches, taking 33 wickets at 18.3, with 5-41 against Riccarton being his best return. Tony exceeded 40 wickets in a season on five occasions.™

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 11 Tony played four first class matches for Canterbury between 1980/81 and 1982/83 and a one day match in 1982/83. Tony’s connections here include his brother David and nephew Matt, the current Premiers captain. It is indicative of Tony’s strong ties to the Club that we had the privilege of hosting his memorial service in the Club pavilion.

SIMPSON GUILLEN Simpson (Sam) Guillen, who died in Christchurch on 2 March 2013 at the age of 88, was a West Indian international wicketkeeper/batsman who later emigrated to Christchurch. He then played three tests in 1956 for New Zealand against his old team and famously effected a stumping to finalise this country’s first test win against any nation. Mr Guillen’s initial club years, before a move to St Albans, were spent at our club from 1952 to 1956. During that time he played 34 matches and scored 1719 runs at an average of 36.5, including a top score of 179 not out. He also made 66 dismissals as a wicketkeeper.

NICK RENOUF Club members were shocked to hear that Nick Renouf from our 2B team had died in a tragic accident on the night of 13 March 2013. 19 year old Nick, from Tauranga, was in his third year as an engineering student at the University of Canterbury and had become established as a popular and respected figure amongst his team-mates. It was a sad and poignant moment when Nick’s team joined a number of his University colleagues, and his mother, father, sister and brother for a minute’s silence before a match in which Nick had originally been picked to play, on the Burnside Park number two field on Saturday 16 March 2013.

12 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club PETER BURKE

Peter Burke became a Life Member of the club at the 2012 Annual General Meeting. This honour goes to those club members who have a made a sustained and significant contribution to the club. It is not bestowed lightly; Peter is only the 26th life member in the club’s 108 year history. The story of Peter’s immense involvement with the club to date also provides an interesting account of many aspects of the club’s last twenty years. Peter began with the club in the 1993/94 when he enrolled his young sons William and Freddie. Within a week of joining, he had not only become a coach but a committee member under the guidance of Bob Marriott, Errol Saunders, Dennis Rae, Derek Cockburn and Graham Norquay. By the beginning of the 1994/95 season Peter had found coaching and committee involvement to his liking until – to his horror in that pre-computer age – he was given five sheets of paper with about 120 names to sort out into 55 teams. In those days there were up to 600 junior players. In 1995/96 Peter became convenor of Burnside Junior Cricket. There were certainly some stressful times at registration, especially making up the teams. Peter’s wife Diane says from the 1st of October till the end of the season, he always sinks into a ‘Cricket Coma’. Peter says that it was also becoming more noticeable that greater emphasis needed to be placed on junior team coaching, so the club set this up under the guidance of Wayne Noon. It is still in place today. In 1996/97 with pressure being placed on grounds for over fifty junior teams and the need for coaching for young members, Peter saw an opportunity for the club to initiate Friday night cricket. So at the end of the season, the club surveyed the parents and players and asked if they preferred to play on Friday evenings or Saturday mornings. Over 70% requested the former. Peter says the hierarchy was horrified that cricket was not only to be played on Friday evening, but also that all the Kiwi and Junior Average games were to be played internally. With the changing times of cricket, there was also a need to introduce modified cricket at a junior level. So on Monday nights the club introduced a form of 15 overs-a-side knockout competition with short boundaries, played with an indoor cricket ball. This was the basis for the change to modified cricket as we know it in junior cricket in Christchurch. Two players Peter remembers well playing the short version of the game were Mark Harding and a now opposition St Albans Captain Aaron Johnston.

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 13 1997/98 was the first season of Friday night cricket with over 230 players participating. Peter remembers Friday nights as a great social event for parents, players and committee members: Pete Doody, Dennis Rae, Dave Biddick and Paul McGirr spent many an hour drinking the odd stubbie and cooking over 100 pottles of chips and sausages. A great community spirit prevailed. Until 1998 the junior club committee took no active role in the decision-making or finances of the overall club. For the club to move forward both areas had to be united so that all stakeholders in the club could take an active role on the committee. The vote for change was carried. Peter’s two main areas of responsibility became Junior Convenor and club funding. In 1999/200, with the game changing, there needed to be further training for players and coaches alike. One of the roles of Alec Astle, who was coaching his young son at the club, was to write the Milo, Have a Go and Kiwi cricket programmes at . The club saw this as a great way to keep kids playing cricket. 2000/01 saw the introduction of Have a Go cricket. The club was the second one in Canterbury and in NZ to undertake this programme which is still in place today. Peter recalls that one of his first Have a Go coaches was Lee McKenzie who still plays a very active role in the club today. A feature on Friday nights at Burnside Oval was the New Zealand Cricket van arriving and handing out posters and banners to the young cricketers at the club. In 2001/02 Peter coached the Junior Premier team with Grant Penlington. He says that perhaps it was his style of coaching but he seemed to produce better Canterbury Soccer players like Tom Batty and Jeremy Wild or All Blacks like Colin Slade. From 2002 to 2005 Peter was President of Christchurch Junior Cricket. However he still took an active role in the club, coaching and organising the year 6, 7 and 8 Western Zonal tournament teams, who played before and after Christmas at Burnside Oval. In 2003/04, with the lack of grounds and unfavourable cricket wickets, Peter saw the need for junior cricket to be played on artificial wickets. He remembers the discussion at NZ cricket asking, “How could this be? Our great summer game played on artificials?” However, after consultation they certainly saw the benefits. Peter took a six month break from cricket in 2005 after three family deaths. However after some persuasion and with the batteries recharged, he was back on 1 October coaching Friday night cricket once more. Since 2006, Peter has once again been Junior Cricket Convenor.

14 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club In 2008, to Peter’s surprise, he received a letter from NZ Cricket informing him that he had won the best female cricket initiative award. He was puzzled by this, since he had never been involved in female cricket initiatives. Discussion ensued with NZ Cricket followed by another letter stating that the award was for best junior initiative for the 2000+ players participating in the Friday night cricket programme. Peter says the awards night was a great event. In 2008 Chairman John Thompson twisted Peter’s arm to come back on the club committee to look after the Juniors and club funding. Peter says these are jobs he really enjoys doing. In 2010/11 Peter introduced coloured clothing for junior cricketers and a season later Tom Latham become the first Friday night cricketer to become a New Zealand Black Cap. Peter Burke – cricket administration career summary to date: Coached at the club from 1993-2001 and from 2005 to the present day. Served on the club committee 1993-2002 and from 2008 to the present day. President of Christchurch Junior Cricket Association from 2002-2005. Canterbury Junior Cricket Association Junior selector from 1997-1999. Christchurch Red South Island Primary Schools team manager from 2000-2005.

In the 2013 New Year’s Honours List, Life Member Brian Adams received the Queen’s Service Medal for services to cricket. The club congratulates Brian on this extremely well-deserved recognition. Brian’s involvement in club, provincial and national cricket has been extensive. His achievements are too many and varied to print in full here. 16 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club SCOTT INGLIS

On Saturday 12 January 2013, when the Premiers played St Albans at Ilam Fields, Scott Inglis, who joined Burnside West University in the 1999/2000 season, played his 100th two day match for the club. Fittingly, this wonderful achievement was marked by a comprehensive win over St Albans the next week. In the meantime, after the first days’ play, Scott’s milestone was celebrated in the clubrooms. Club Patron Graham Dowling presented Scott with a trophy to mark the occasion, and also took the opportunity to present a thank you gift to Liz Inglis. A second award was also presented to celebrate Scott’s 200th match for the club in all formats, which occurred the previous season on the 8th February 2012 in a two day match against Lancaster Park Woolston. This match also resulted in a victory. Scott is only the 17th player to play 100 two day matches in the 108 year history of the club. By the end of this season, Scott had taken 290 two-day wickets for the Premiers, the fourth highest in the club’s long history. Scott has taken 430 wickets in all three formats of the game, the third highest after only Peter Sharp (549) and Stephen Bateman (445). In all three formats of the game, Scott is the second most capped player with 220 appearances, behind only Russell Haglund’s 224 caps. Scott has indicated he will be back for the 2013/14 season, so we look forward to more milestones ahead. Congratulations Scott, and thanks.

Scott Inglis receives a trophy to mark his 100th two-day match from Club Patron Graham Dowling.

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 25 AUDITOR’S REPORT

I have audited the attached financial report The financial report provides information about the past financial performance of the Club and its financial position as at 30 April 2013. The information is stated in accordance with the accounting policies. Committee Responsibilities The Committee is responsible for the preparation of the financial report, which fairly reflects the financial position of the Club as at 30 April 2013 and of the result of its operations for the year ended on that date. Auditor’s Responsibilities It is my responsibility to express an independent opinion on the financial report presented by the Committee and report my opinion to you. Basis of Opinion An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence relative to the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. It also includes assessing: • the significant estimates and judgements made by the Committee in the presentation and preparation of the financial report; • whether the accounting policies are appropriate to the Club’s circumstances, consistently applied and adequately disclosed. I conducted the audit in accordance with the New Zealand Auditing Standards. I planned and performed my audit so as to obtain all the information and explanations which I considered necessary in order to provide me with sufficient evidence to give reasonable assurance that the financial statements are free from any misstatements, whether caused by fraud or error. In forming my opinion I also evaluated the overall adequacy of the presentation of information in the financial statements. Other than in my capacity as auditor I have no relationship with, or any interest in, the Club. Qualified Opinion In common with other organisations of a similar nature, control over revenues from the various activities prior to its being recorded is limited and there are no practical audit procedures to determine the effects of the limited control. In this respect alone, I have not obtained all the information and explanations I have required.

26 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club In my opinion, except for adjustments that might have been necessary had I been able to obtain sufficient evidence concerning various sources of income, the financial report reflects the operations of the Club for the year ended 30 April 2013. In my opinion, the attached financial report reflects the financial position of the Club as at 30 April 2013. My audit was completed on 11 September 2013 and my qualified opinion is expressed as at that date. (Signed) B A McCRORIE CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT (Hon Retired) Christchurch

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 27 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT One of the themes of this annual report is Junior Cricket. We are renowned for our quality Junior cricket programme and in 2012 the Junior Premiers lived up to that standard by winning their competition for the third year running, an excellent achievement. Junior Cricket is kept vibrant by the large group of volunteers, like Amanda Simmons who won the club’s Junior Merit Award this season. Peter Burke, our Junior Convenor was recently awarded life membership of the club. Congratulations to all concerned. Junior Cricket is indicative of a club that is thriving overall. While there is more to do yet – and some much coveted silverware proved frustratingly elusive this season – there is much of which to be proud: a good Premier side that is now competitive with anyone; a core of enthusiastic and committed senior teams; two senior trophies this season, to the 2Bs and the Foxes (Presidents); a talented and hard-working committee, a solid financial foundation which is now seeing the beginnings of some re-investment in the club. The key challenges ahead are: ● Continuously improving the development and performance of our Premier side. While not bettering last season’s overall results across the three competitions, they came extremely close to winning the two-day title this season. The bowling unit was arguably the best in the grade but the batting was inconsistent. From the 229 innings played for the Premiers this season, there were only 13 fifties and no centuries. If we can be better at batting time and overs, there will be Premier trophies in our cabinet pretty quickly. As Brett Thomson notes in his 2A report, this is an issue not confined just to Premier level; it is food for thought that in this report’s Honours Board there are twenty bowling but only two batting achievements. ● On-going investment in the club’s assets. Doug Allcock has summarised this well in his Treasurer’s report. Two immediate issues are finalising the earthquake strengthening needed in the original part of the pavilion, and refurbishing and modernising the lounge, kitchen and restrooms upstairs. The latter has been deferred until the extent and cost of the former is fully understood. We are very grateful for the on-going financial support from the George Howden Trust, which provides us with more options than would otherwise be available: ● Diversifying and maximising our revenue, so that we can continue to re- invest in our assets; ● Earning sufficient revenue to fund an operating budget that reduces the risk of an over-reliance of already busy volunteers, and allows them to focus on their areas of expertise.

28 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club My thanks to the captains or managers of our senior teams, Matt Farrant, Brett Thomson, Dan Vedder, Rob Hoysted, Regan Wilson, Chris Peters and David Robertson – we appreciate all you have done in setting up, organising and leading your teams. We are also fortunate to have Brendon Donkers as Premier team coach. Thanks again to our committee. John Thompson continues to provide a wide array of services to the club, notably preparing quality pitches – this season despite the absence of a heavy roller for half of the season. Peter Burke was a fund-raiser extraordinaire and his other achievements are recorded elsewhere in this report; Lee McKenzie is our Secretary and works with Merivale-Papanui Cricket Club to run the excellent youth club North West Youth Cricket – we are grateful for the graduates it sends us. No-one envies Brett Thomson his job of putting enough senior players on the park each Saturday, but he does it with expertise and good humour. Doug Allcock, along with his assistant Hazel Curtis, continues to improve our financial systems, and we are grateful to Marriotts Chartered Accountants for their support. Ashley Taggart’s oversight of our Premier and senior cricket, and his thoughtful long-term planning have been an invaluable part of our recent improvements. Thanks to Tony Feely, our Premier scorer. I am also grateful to our regular newsletter contributors. They are informative, entertaining and provide a detailed permanent record of the season. Carl Huyser worked alongside John Thompson for another season of preparing pitches and surrounds, this season including all the extra effort with the watering and the light roller. After a few seasons, Carl, while continuing to play for us, is moving on to another role and we wish him well. Thanks also to the spouses, partners and families of our players, coaches and committee members. Without your contributions, patience and forbearance, this club would not be possible. Paul O’Flaherty Chairman

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 29 TREASURER’S REPORT The 2012-2013 financial year reflects the determination of the committee to continue to develop the facilities and services provided by the Burnside West University Cricket Club. Our vision is to provide an enjoyable cricketing environment with the best facilities reflecting one of the foremost Premier cricket clubs in the city. In achieving this goal, we believe we will continue to attract players of both quality and quantity, thereby ensuring the prosperity of the club into the future. The club, as with most not-for-profit organisations, relies heavily on pub charity funding and we are continually indebted to Peter Burke for the wonderful job he continues to do in this area. The deficit of $12,711 for the year needs to be read in conjunction with the $21,393 surplus from the 2011-2012 year. The accounts perhaps more accurately reflect the true cost of running the club as we have sought to pay bar staff and cleaners, rather than rely on those that give so much of their time to the club already. We have also undertaken capital purchases totalling almost $20,000 (2011-12: $2,000), including heat pumps and a TV for the clubrooms, replacement pitch covers and a Super Sopper for the grounds. It is hoped we can continue to develop the club and its facilities in this way for the ensuing season. We as a committee remain acutely aware of the need to balance affordable subscriptions and the availability of external charitable funding with the need for a degree of fiscal responsibility whilst driving the continued development of the club and its resources. We look forward to seeing a stronger well-resourced club translate into greater successes “out in the middle” long into the future. Doug Allcock Treasurer

The club committee is very grateful for the support it receives from Marriotts Chartered Accountants who provide financial services to the club throughout the season.

30 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club GROUNDS AND MACHINERY REPORT

This year I am pleased to report good overall improvements to both wicket performance and ground preparation. The usual dramas were encountered with machinery malfunctions and vandalism but, apart from “blowing an engine” on our four-ton roller, most other problems were overcome with “rubber bands and Kiwi ingenuity”. Plant and equipment has been upgraded with the addition of a super-sopper to extract water from covers, new scrim, a new block mower to speed up the mowing of blocks, plus a ride-on mower for ease of mowing around areas not covered by Council. The addition of a lock-up shed underneath the balcony for storage of covers, mower and super-sopper will enable better access to equipment required for game day. All blocks including the practice area have had total renovation work carried out during the off-season. A portion of this work was carried out under the CCA programme at the end of the season and the results are now very evident. We applied just under a quarter of a ton of high grade fertilizer to all blocks including our junior wickets and the results are very encouraging with good grass root structure showing through. Our thanks to Carl Huyser and Angus Harman for their help in rolling and marking each week, enabling our wickets to remain the best overall in Christchurch. This season will be full-on with T20 Tournaments and World Cup 50-over games scheduled for Burnside. Hopefully you all enjoy this coming season – your committee work hard to ensure our club remains top of the pecking order. John Thompson Convener Grounds

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 31 The 2012/13 season started off with a great PREMIER GRADE pre-season programme both indoor and out which also involved a small tour to Blenheim. It was a fantastic initiative by the club and Brendon, which allowed a number of players to have a decent hit-out on a great deck before the season started. Sadly this didn’t initially translate into results as we started our one-day campaign with three losses before scraping home on Duckworth-Lewis against Sydenham at home. The team showed its potential in patches over the remainder of the competition, putting in a couple of great performances to post victories against Riccarton and Canterbury Country, but sadly they weren’t regular enough for our liking. This saw us finish the one-day campaign in ninth place. Although we had a difficult start to the season the boys really came together as a unit, building a great team culture. Our desire for success also saw us put in the extra effort to get back the winning feeling as we even added in weekly fitness sessions lead by Mitch Croft. The two-day campaign started off poorly against Marist-Harewood as we surrendered first innings points at home, before the second day produced a real season-defining moment. Set 232 to win in 70 overs with our backs against the wall we finally stood up – reaching the target with three wickets in hand and overs to spare. That performance really gave us some momentum going into the Christmas break and the belief our hard work was finally starting to pay off. The New Year brought about a special occasion with Scott Inglis playing his 100th two-day game for the club. Scott is such an integral part of this team and has been for a long time so everyone wanted to put in a performance worthy of his achievement. We played St Albans at Ilam Park and after a dominant display with the ball, we managed a 64-run first innings lead. The second day saw St Albans fight back with the bat and we were set a tricky 161 to win. No one told that to our openers as we chased the total down in 22 overs with eight wickets in hand. Tinus Huyser and George Worker both registered half centuries as they put in a great performance to honour Scott’s achievement. We struggled to back up our first two performances as we lost outright to both East Shirley and Old Boys Collegians. Frustratingly we were in both games for long periods but just lacked the killer punch to get us over the line. We got it back against Riccarton in style, amassing 246 batting first before bowling them out for 129. We were in the rare position of enforcing the follow-on as we pressed home our advantage, bowling Riccarton out again for 125. David Sewell was the chief destroyer taking ten wickets for the match. That left us with 25 runs to chase down which we did for the loss of one wicket.

32 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club Next up we put in a great day’s cricket against Sydenham to all but beat them in a day as we eventually won by an innings and 77 runs. After four outright victories we were now locked at the top of the table with Lancaster Park Woolston, and our final game against them was basically a final, as the victor would decide the winner of the competition. We drew first blood on day one, securing first innings points but lead by only nine runs in a low scoring affair as 76 played 85. At the end of the day Park were 80/2 as luck deserted us, setting the game up for a grandstand finish the following week. The last day of the season started promisingly as we took the remaining eight wickets for 60 runs. That left us with a 132 runs to make and the trophy would be ours. Sadly it wasn’t meant to be as we crumbled from 71/2 to be 94 all out. It was a real heart breaker with the silverware within our grasp but it has certainly made us hungry for more success as we look forward to the new season. Matt Farrant Captain

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 39 The team started the season in high hopes SECOND GRADE 2A after making some good leaps forward in the back half of the previous season. A good pre- season and the arrival of some new players had us in a positive frame of mind. The one-day competition, which was probably our best format, got off to a great start with us jumping out to an early lead. However, with our students departing in November, we started to lose games that we ought to have won. We managed to get into the semis and faced Old Boys. With a pretty strong team and winning the toss we sent them in. The boys dug really deep and, on the back of Mike Allcock’s four wickets and his amazing run out, we had OBC reeling at 130 odd for 8, only for their veteran Jason Middlemiss to steady the ship and see up 200 on the nose. We thought a target of four an over was very gettable. However some really good bowling by OBC sent us crashing out by a large loss in the finish. There were no large stand-outs in this form of cricket, just a lot of tidy performances which should bode well for next season. The T20 competition was one we targeted. We had a good mix of experience and youth and we were able to get Mark Harding out of retirement. Mark, along with Mike Allcock, was fairly dominant for us. Both boys paved the way for us to enter the final, where again we met Old Boys. The result did not go in our favour, but it was encouraging that the boys played with great spirit when the chips were down. Which brings us to the two day competition where, it is fair to say, we massively under-achieved. Injuries, rugby, hockey, weddings and students coming and going dented our playing roster. A few guys played well above their weight, none more than Nicky Johnston. Nicky played his heart out week in and week out and was dependable with both bat and ball. In the coming season the boys will need to put a big price on their wicket and dig in to score more runs consistently, as we only had a handful of fifties and one century, which is not good enough if you want to compete in this arena. I would like to thank Brendon Donkers for all the work with the guys – much appreciated. You can really see his values and disciplines starting to come through. We have recruited well for the coming season and it looks like there will be some great competition for spots. So all things going to plan we will bring some silverware back to the club. We are in a good place for the 13/14 season. Brett Thomson Captain

44 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club It’s hard to sum up the 2Bs’ season in a THIRD GRADE 2B sentence or two. Coming into the Skipper’s role very late in the piece, I wasn’t sure what sort of team I’d have to work with or even if we’d have a regular eleven. With my fears being unfounded, we developed a core of regular players but still managed to retain the traditional 2B revolving door policy. With the likes of Sam Jones and Geoff Fosbender turning out consistent performances all season long, our traditional strength while University is sitting and the occasional return of some of the legends of 2Bs past, we had a good foundation to build with an eye towards winning some silverware. I think it’s fair to say that despite the way Foz bats, T20 isn’t really our natural game and our position on the table reflected that. Our experience of the two day competition this year was that we could be competitive with any team in the grade and it seemed right up until the beginning of the last round that we were a chance for the title. One of the great things this season was having a team that wanted to play an aggressive style of cricket, and this paid off most satisfyingly against Old Boys in a rain delayed match won outright by BWU. Some of the standout team performances came in the two-day competition, with Sami Swadi picking up his first ever half-century in the first innings against Hornby and then 50 at number two in the second. Sami had a stand-out half season on his break from medical school, picking up the fielder of the year award. Had he played the whole season he would surely have challenged for both the batting and bowling trophies as well. Other stand-outs in the two day format included Sam Caldwell and Chandan Kapoor. Special mention to Kyle “Mr Consistent” Turnbull. In the 50-over competition we made a particularly slow start as the team came together and we figured out the game we wanted to play. We lost games we should have won and won some games we probably should have lost. However we did enough to scrape into the semi-finals to play a formidable old rival in top-placed Riccarton. Setting them only 163 for the win after a 45 run partnership for the last wicket, we put out an outstanding bowling effort. Rhys Barron with five wickets and Sahib Singh with 3/7 booked us a date with Old Boys at Burnside Park in the final. Old Boys, despite talking a fine game, only managed 85 as Nicky Johnston picked up 3/10; the batsmen bringing the trophy home for the loss of only three wickets. All round a great season on the field for the 2Bs. During the season we suffered the tragic loss of Nick Renouf, who was a regular part of the eleven and is sorely missed by the team. 46 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club THE CANNONS The Cannons went in to the 2012/13 season proud and cocky as all hell after spending the winter sipping from the coveted golden chalice that is the Christchurch Metropolitan Cricket 3B trophy. And we had reason to be. With new principal sponsor NicoWear Sportswear on board, we looked awesome in our all-new strip, and we were paying even money at the TAB to take out Best Dressed 3B Team at the very least. The season started with a hiss and a roar with good wins over Old Boys and Sumner, and it wasn’t long before we started to see some stellar individual performances. The Badger O’Keefe found his groove with the two-piece against Hornby Chicken Korma to take 4/15. In a fiery home derby against the Brawlers, the ever-consistent Jellyman did some serious damage to stumps and rib cages, finishing with 6/11. Hat Evans, a new face at the Cannons, was impressive throughout, swinging the ball in from a great height to finish the season with 19 wickets and an impressive economy rate of just 3 and over. Dilla Smith was destructive early, earning a hat trick against Sumner, and shone again after the Christmas break with a best of 6/17. He went on to claim the Cannons’ Best Bowler award. The Viking (the man with the coolest nickname) was dependable as always behind the stumps, taking 15 catches and tidying up some terrible throws to exact several run outs. But it has to be mentioned he spent the most time (110 overs) in the infamous Drop Catch Helmet. Sorry Viking. With Michael Cook going AWOL this season, the Cannons batting line up was looking for a new rock at the top of the order. Early success was found by Rabbit Millar, with a huge 92 vs. LPW, the current Cannons high score. Rabbit was also impressive against the Goats later in the season, after a subdued innings of 35 off about 55 balls, quickly turned into a run-a-ball 65*. I think he had a dinner reservation. With captain Magnum Peters returning from AFL duties, the decision was made to throw The Main Event Moseley to the top of the order to join him, pushing Rabbit to #3. The experiment couldn’t have gone better. The new opening pair grew into a formidable force, with half a dozen opening stands over 50. The Rock Moseley proved the calm head locking it down at one end, while Magnum destroyed bowling line-ups and souls from the other. Magnum finished the season with four 50s, a high score of 72, and earned Cannons’ Best Batsman for the second year running. Despite the dominance at the top, the Cannons middle order was still called on to save its fair share of games. A blistering innings of 60 from the part-timer Roadblock Smith at Sydenham Park reminded us that class is permanent.

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 47 In another example of this, and probably the most famous of all Cannons victories, was the New Brighton game three days out from Christmas. A standout opening spell from Radar Kinraid which saw the ball swinging both ways was backed up by tight bowling from Peters, and New Brighton were dismissed for 72. This proved to be the most difficult and exciting 72-run chase I have ever witnessed. The Cannons started poorly, very poorly, reaching 2 for 3, then 4 for 10, and stumbled to 33 for 9. Enter Ando Anderson and self-confessed specialist fielder, Mick Burr. For those of you who don’t know Mick Burr, his top score in all forms of cricket is 8, coming from two nicks through slips to the third man boundary. What followed was a roller coaster ride that remains vivid in my memory. Some impeccable power hitting from Ando saw him despatch a bowler who was probably looking forward to finishing the day with figures of 5/10, as well as anyone else who tossed the ball up. Burr was no slouch either, joining in with exquisite timing and speed between the wickets, turning 2s into 3s, and running many overthrows. Somehow, somehow, these two fine young men put on 40 for the final wicket to see the Cannons home. The Cannons finished the season Minor Premiers, and went on to the semi-final against Marist White. Burr’s confidence with the bat had continued to grow, and, chasing 180, he put on an 80 run middle order stand with the ageing Bruck Hitchcock, scoring 46 and 48 respectively. This nail biter was wrapped up by the Badger, crushing a 6 over long on with 7 balls to spare. Against New Brighton in the Grand Final, the Cannons were chasing 205 for the win. Despite our best efforts, we fell agonisingly short at 200/7. Although disappointed by the loss, I believe we all walked off the field that day knowing we left it all out in the middle. Very fitting of a Grand Final, it was probably the cleanest, fairest, and hardest game both teams had played all season. Hats off to you New Brighton, you were gracious in victory as we were in defeat. But if any of you read this, know that that is our trophy, its rightful place is on the Cannon’s mantle, and you are just keeping it warm for us. See you next year. 52 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club The year started with high hopes for the newly THE BREWERS formed Burnside Brewers. The first year as a closed team brought with it consistency of players and the promise of a well- balanced team to take on the competition. After the first three games the Brewers were 0-3 and despair filled the changing room. It appeared that the hours of pre-season training at the nets had not been quite enough as team scores fell each week from 122 to 96 to 68. The only real highlight was Harry Potter’s stunt double, Isaac Davis, taking season best figures of 5-31 versus New Brighton, with one notable wicket where he turned the opening batsman into a frog. The fourth game played showed glimpses of things to come for the Brewers with the first score over 200 as well as the first time the full 40 overs were used, amassing 201/8. Karl ‘Shades’ Grant hit his season high 74, the first of his five fifties, and showed the form which would eventually lead him to holding the much-coveted Al Brown Trophy for the 2012/13 season. He was supported by the Muslim extremist Nyoman Sanjuku’s blazing 60*, a game for which he will thoroughly deserve his 50 virgins in death. The Brewers entered into the first win streak of the season the following game. The total of 148/9 was only achievable with two more season highs from Tony Edlin and Regan Wilson – contributing 70 and 49* respectively. Isaac Davis (3/18) and Bala Cole (3/23) ripped through the Merivale Papanui line-up to give the Brewers our second win on the trot. The highlight of the match however was an LBW appeal turned down off the bowling of Tony Edlin with the reason given being the ball bounced outside the off stump. When advised of the LBW rule the umpire stormed off, but not before threatening the bowler and our captain with violence when told to go home and google the rules. A loss to the Cannons by four wickets the next week was followed by a much improved performance versus Sumner. Opening batsman Sean Armstrong hit a season high 46 to help set a low total of 132/7 on a small ground. The Brewers needed something special and up stepped Karl Grant (5/8), who destroyed the Sumner top order and remarkably took their first five wickets for no runs. Sumner was reeling at 8/6 but after a gallant fight-back, they eventually succumbed and fell short by 27 runs. After a disappointing loss to the Sydenham Goats, the next opponent was Marist- Harewood where the Brewers reached 145/9 off the back of four scores above 20 but with no one going on to post a big score. Regan ‘Skip’ Wilson (4/22) and Karl Grant (3/21) ensured the opposition would fall 15 runs short of their target.

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 53 The most crucial loss of the season followed when OBC, aided by the mass- murdering Charles Manson taking five wickets, ran through the Brewers batting order and a total of 88 was never going to be enough on such a fast outfield. A win here would have seen the Brewers make their way to the top tier of the competition and be in the running for the title. Instead the Brewers were resigned to competing in section two and the team set the goal of finishing the season without dropping another game. LPW were forced to sleep on their stomachs as newly promoted opener James Jacques (79) and Karl Grant (52) showed why these two batsman ended up scoring over 1000 runs between them and were the rocks of our batting line up. Such was the brutality of the batting, that the fielders were often retrieving the ball after it crashed into the Garrick Park boundary, not at all far from a blood-thirsty pit-bull lurking over the fence waiting to rip a throat out. Hornby fell next with James Jacques providing the overall season highlight by carrying his bat and blasting an unbeaten 118 to help the Brewers reach 210/7. Bala Cole (5/17) bowled extremely well and helped restrict Hornby to 123. The next game versus LPW was the most convincing game the Brewers played all year. Batting first the Brewers reached 228/9. James Jacques (70) and Karl Grant (41) continued their good form and along with Ren Watane (32) dined out on the LPW bowlers. LPW’s reply of 22 all out was woeful with their innings lasting only 63 balls. Tony Edlin (5/10) and Karl Grant (4/8) the destroyers on the day. A 206 run win – the pinnacle of the season. Sumner were next to feel the full force of the Brewers’ hunger for amassing scores over 200. Batting first the Brewers made 211/7, with Karl Grant (64), James Jacques (47) and Nyoman Sanjuku (40*) all getting amongst the runs. Honours were spread evenly with the ball for a comfortable 37 run win. Sydenham All Stars came out firing, desperate to claw back some respectability after their previous losses. Ren Watane (6/23) took the Brewers’ season best bowling figures to help restrict Sydenham to 119. Wickets fell regularly with James Jacques (37) and Tony Edlin (20*) seeing the Brewers home amidst some controversial umpiring decisions. OBC failed to turn up mentally in the next outing and could only manage to post 70 runs with Regan Wilson and Karl Grant taking three wickets each. The target was easily chased down with eight wickets to spare. A less than convincing batting performance by the Brewers against Hornby in the next match meant a modest total of 109 was set and the Brewers were left feeling slightly vulnerable. If it wasn’t for Karl Grant pasting the Hornby bowlers for 53 it

54 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club would’ve been an early day. James ‘Unicorn’ McIntyre’ (3/20) and Bala Cole (3/8) ensured that the win streak continued for the Brewers and Hornby were trundled for 85. In what would arguably be described as the worst decision this millennia in world cricket, LPW sent the Brewers into bat, apparently forgetting the 206 run annihilation the last time the two teams met. With the help of pinch hitter Bala Cole (61) along with Sean Armstrong (37), the Brewers recorded the highest opening partnership of the season, putting on 96 in quick time, leading LPW to regret their decision to create a cricket team as opposed to a book club. To add insult to injury the innings came to a close in the 39th over with a final score of 221/7 declared. In the field the Brewers kept the foot on the throat with James McIntyre being the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 for 8 off 4 overs. Sumner was quickly overcome with the Brewers knocking them over for 128 and comfortably scoring the required runs with four wickets in hand. Jonno McCarrison hit a flawless innings of 21* at number three, a position he owned throughout the season. The final game was again an exhibition of the Brewers’ two best batters as Karl Grant (59) and James Jacques (68) put on the season’s highest partnership of 111. Regan Wilson, apparently conscious of the addition of strike rate to the batting stats, promptly hit 43* from 32 balls to help the Brewers to a total of 209/4. In reply the Sydenham All Stars could only muster 73 with a solid all-round bowling performance from the team. The boys played extremely well all year, albeit with a shaky start to the season. The six losses in the first ten games proved one too many and we found ourselves in the bottom rung of the ladder. We then found our feet and won ten games on the trot. With a total of seven team scores over 200 and being bowled out only six times in the season, our batting was solid. Karl Grant finished the year with 556 runs and James Jacques with 489. Five players reached the milestone of fifty in an innings and James Jacques carried his bat to score the only century for the team, 118*. The bowling stocks are looking very promising for next season, although we will lose our inspirational opener Isaac Davis who has been the lynch pin of the attack for the past three seasons. Four players took 26 wickets each this season, in a four way tie at the top of the leader board; Karl Grant, Bala Cole, Isaac Davis, and Regan Wilson. Five players took five wickets in a match and Ren Watane took the season’s best figures of 6 for 23 with his pacey leg spinners. Jonno McCarrison was fantastic behind the stumps with the gloves and was constantly testing the batters’ reactions when standing out of their crease. Mike

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 55 ‘Fresh Meat’ Banks’ bowling improved throughout the season and he was energetic in the field, taking some crucial catches. He was also known to make opposing batsmen aware of any increase in the required run rate or if there were any demons in the pitch! Reuben Le Roux showed his raw talent on numerous occasions and the Brewers hope to gain his services full time next season. Many thanks to the Brewers Arms Tavern for sponsoring us, to our regular supporters, and to the players who filled in during the year to help us field a team. An original team member Rory Coulston managed to play a few games despite work commitments, along with cameos from Lee James, Mike Chun, Dan Stone, Heath Johnston and Ryan Smallbone. Overall 2012/13 has been a thoroughly enjoyable and successful season for the Brewers and we look forward to next season. Regan Wilson Captain

58 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club There are certainly some heavy FOXES (PRESIDENTS) hitters in the CCA Presidents Grade. East Shirley Gold, Park Woolston and Sydenham’s Cardinals are perennial challengers for the title race – while Burnside tends to linger mid-table. Not for 37 years had we prevailed in the grade and, even with a satisfying third place finish last season, we didn’t really harbour serious hope of doing so in 2012/13. But victory would be ours, the silverware plentiful and the smiles wide. Oddly, it was my teeth that ignited the spark of success for the season. They hurt, so I sought assistance from North-West Dental, and Christopher Peter Kennedy in particular. Dental visits for me inspire fear, but time spent in the chair was passed with discussion about cricket, sponsorship and planning. What resulted was remarkable. Pre-Season ales, furtive discussion and a dose of recruiting followed. With four sponsors on board we ordered and subsequently took possession of new playing shirts, plus shirts for after-play. A pre-season canter against the Cannons steeled our resolve. The season was a success from the start. We quickly rose to the head of the table, secured the Frampton Shield and amused ourselves with Facebook photos of it in strange places – police cells, the MCG, Shane’s drinking venues and more. Games were won comfortably and uncomfortably. Match reports flowed like a river, bubbly with humour and sentiment. We travelled well and celebrated better. Momentum gathered as Turner grasped a miracle against Sumner, and Conway plastered Brougham Street. We settled the batting order and developed a four-pronged pace attack, with slip catches dropped like kids off the school bus. Double defeats short of Christmas re-focused us, while Barrett, Kerr and Hintz became increasingly available. Someone once said that statistics are like bikinis—they show a lot but not everything. Ours show the brutal dominance of Conway with bat, and Kember with ball. Everyone else played their parts, as we again climbed the ladder, and we found ourselves playing Merivale Papanui in a virtual, “winner take all” final. We squeezed the former Suburbanites with ball and Turner played an extraordinary hand to see us home. We celebrated well and Kennedy deservedly pressed multiple fleshes in accepting the various trophies at the CCA awards. A big thanks to our sponsors – Fox & Associates, North-West Dental, Drayton Cartage and NZDDA. Looking like a team helps you to feel like one. Roll on 2013/14! David Robertson Captain

62 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club Friday night cricket was well attended, JUNIOR CRICKET especially in Have a Go where numbers have been increasing. Have a Go cricket was coached by Angus Harman, Alex Reese and myself, ensuring all players fully participated in various drills and skills. Carl Huyser coached Kiwi Cricket, teaching the players various games and skills, preparing them well for Super 8s and hardball. On Saturdays we fielded teams in Senior Premier, Senior one-day, Junior one-day and Junior Super 8s. Our Senior Premier team was coached by Peter Hay. Pre-Christmas this young team performed extremely well, winning the Christchurch Junior Cricket Year 8 competition for the third year in a row. Post-Christmas the team finished second. Although some of our lower grade teams struggled at times, there were some sterling performances with both bat and ball that will place the club in a good position for the seasons to come. Congratulations to these players for their selection in the following teams:

We wish him well for the future. Well done to Angus Harman and Alex Reese for coaching our Saturday morning Junior teams. Special thanks to groundsman John Thompson for preparing first class wickets during the season for our Juniors to play on.

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 63 Thanks to the following coaches, managers and scorers for their help during the season: Peter Hay, Colin Chaney, Angus McIntosh, Matt Stocks, Richard Hartshorn, Murray Hawes, Matt Forster, Shane Young, Amanda Simmons and Mike Dunlop. Congratulations to Amanda Simmons for your Junior Club Merit award. Finally on behalf of the club I would like to thank all parents, supporters and sponsors for your contribution during the season. Junior Premiers Champions pre-Christmas and runners-up post-Christmas all equates to an excellent season for the Juniors Premier side and continues the proud record this team has had in recent years. The year 8 Premier competition is literally a season of two halves as we lost the year 8 boys after Christmas, off to join the youth ranks. In the first half of the season we won 7 out of 8 games but importantly won the final and also held the Derek Cockburn shield. This was a well-balanced side with 6 year 8 boys and 5 high quality year 7 players. The batting was dominated by Simon Yorston (267 runs), Louie Chapman (149 runs), Mitchell Hay (142 runs) and Rishav Dhakal (134 runs) with others chipping in at important times. The bowling attack had plenty of options with all picking up wickets. Ankur Patel was unplayable at times with his pace. However the most successful wicket takers were Dominic Cornish (12 wickets) and Jack-Charles Morrow (9 wickets). Of this team Simon Yorston, Fergus McIntosh & Rishav Dhakal played at the South Island Primary Schools tournament. After Christmas six new players joined the team and we hardly missed a beat, winning 7 of the 8 games played and ending up a very credible second. A number of boys contributed with the bat with Mitchell Hay (147 runs), Tom Dunlop (139 runs), Dominic Cornish (134 runs and Louie Chapman (126 runs) leading the charge. Dominic (10 wickets), Kobe Beecroft (8 wickets) and Louie Chapman (8 wickets) led the bowling, helped by our two excellent keepers in Mitchell and Tom. Both teams were well supported by a loyal group of supporters. Peter Hay Coach
