This sketch by Norman Appleton, shows what it must have been like. 2 BRAMHAM AIRBASE BRAMHAM AIRBASE 3 THE PROJECT IN BRIEF The project to record the life and times of the former Airbase that sits just outside Tadcaster and whose one remaining artefact – a large, black Hangar – is visible to all who drive along the A64 between Bramham Crossroads and Headley bar – was inspired by the initiative of the Heritage Lottery Fund deciding to fund community groups to write down their stories at the centenary of the end of World War One. Some of the stories around the airbase are known to a few in the vicinity – primarily those involved in Historical Societies such as those at Bramham and Tadcaster. -

Exploring human experience in the North research arƟ cle “Indigenizing” the Bush Pilot in CBC’s ArcƟ c Air Renée Hulan Saint Mary’s University, Halifax Abstract When the Canadian BroadcasƟ ng CorporaƟ on (CBC) cut original programming in 2014, it cancelled the drama that had earned the network’s highest raƟ ngs in over a decade. Arc c Air, based on Omni Films’ reality TV show Buff alo Air, created a diverse cast of characters around a Dene bush pilot and airline co-owner played by Adam Beach. Despite its cancellaƟ on, episodes can sƟ ll be viewed on the CBC website, and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has conƟ nued broadcasƟ ng the popular show. Through a content analysis of Arc c Air and its associated paratext, read in relaƟ on to the stock Canadian literary fi gure of the heroic bush pilot, this arƟ cle argues that when viewed on the CBC, the program visually “Indigenizes” the bush pilot character, but suggests only one way forward for Indigenous people. On the “naƟ onal broadcaster,” the imagined urban, mulƟ cultural North of Arc c Air—in which Indigenous people are one cultural group among others parƟ cipaƟ ng in commercial ventures—serves to normalize resource development and extracƟ on. Broadcast on APTN, however, where the show appears in the context of programming that represents Indigenous people in a wide range of roles, genres, and scenarios, Arc c Air takes on new meaning. Theory of aces: high score by skill or luck? M.V. Simkin and V.P. Roychowdhury Department of Electrical Engineering, University of California, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1594 We studied the distribution of WWI fighter pilots by the number of victories they were credited with along with casualty reports. Using the maximum entropy method we obtained the underlying distribution of pilots by their skill. We find that the variance of this skill distribution is not very large, and that the top aces achieved their victory scores mostly by luck. For example, the ace of aces, Manfred von Richthofen, most likely had a skill in the top quarter of the active WWI German fighter pilots, and was no more special than that. When combined with our recent study [10], showing that fame grows exponentially with victory scores, these results (derived from real data) show that both outstanding achievement records and resulting fame are mostly due to chance. During the “Manhattan project” (the making of nuclear bomb), physicist Enrico Fermi asked General Leslie Groves, the head of the project, what is the definition of a “great” general [1]. Groves replied that any general who had won five battles in a row might safely be called great. Fermi then asked how many generals are great. Groves said about three out of every hundred. Fermi conjectured that if the chance of winning one battle is 1/2 then the chance of winning five battles in a row is 1 25 = 1 32 . “So you are right, General, about three out of every hundred. Mathematical probability, not genius.” Similarly to a great general, an ace is a fighter pilot who achieved five or more victories. -

A PLAN FOR THE FUTURE: THE LEGACIES OF THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH AIR TRAINING PLAN IN CANADA'S PRAIRIE PROVINCES by Allan Newell B.A. University of British Columbia, 2005 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AUGUST 2007 © Allan Newell, 2007 ABSTRACT The establishment of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) saw the creation of more than one hundred air training schools across the country. In the West, the wide-open spaces facilitated many of these sites, and a sophisticated network of airfields sprang up across the prairies almost overnight. The substantial and enduring impact of the BCATP's airfields and schools in the Canadian West is curiously overlooked by historians, who (for the most part) often focus on the Plan's overall operation at the expense of its lasting influence. The construction of the BCATP sites prompted extensive modernisation of the existing infrastructure in many of the small communities selected for schools. Moreover, the vast sums of money poured into the region and the tens of thousands of Commonwealth airmen who came to train at the airfields had a significant and long-term cultural and economic impact on the region. Along with improved infrastructure, the BCATP brought a new cosmopolitanism and a strong regional affinity for the Air Force. More importantly, the Plan influenced the perceptions and perceived roles of women in the prairies and has had an enduring effect on the Canadian women's movement. In the postwar years, the demographics of the prairies shifted as thousands of BCATP alumni returned to take-up residence in the region they had trained in, while at the same time Canadian war brides departed to be with their new husbands abroad. -

Greetings Members and Friends of EAA Chapter 866, We certainly have a wonderful group of folks in our chapter, and we had a terrific annual party last month at the Indian River Golf Preserve in Mims! If you were able to attend the party, I hope you had a great time and enjoyed socializing with your fellow chapter members. A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to Kimberly Brennan for all the effort she put into planning the many little details of the event!! Thanks Kimberly! I’ve been spending a little more time at the airport these past couple of weeks, working on the new Panther kit project with my partners Eddie & Bob. I’ll save an update on that for later, but I will say that we’re all very impressed with the quality of the kit, and with the way it goes together, and we’re really moving along on the project. Stop by and see it if you have a chance, but if you’re not careful, we might put a pair of Cleco pliers in your hand! I thought I’d use a little space in the newsletter this month to give you some insight into my thinking as it relates to our great little EAA Chapter. Staying with the Macedonian theme, we also have a great piece by Boris Ciglic titled "Premier Serbian Fighters", on the use of French fighters with Serb forces in WW1. We have the second article on Guy Duncan Smith, plus one on his brother, Harold Beaumont Smith. We also have the continuation of Mick Davis' excellent series "Gazetteer of UK Flying Sites" (which gets to Pett) and Paul Leaman's "Atlas of German & Foreign Seaplanes", which reaches Zeppelin-Staaken. -
