BYTON LYONSHALL SHOBDON STAUNTON-ON-ARROW GROUP MOORCOURT PEMBRIDGE THE OF PARISHES ARROWVALEmessenger August - Septmber 2016 Byton Bar-b-que after the group service at 11.00am on the 7th August Service details and magazine content available on-line at www.arrowvalechurches.org.uk 1 Our churches are increasingly popular with visiting groups. This U3A group totalled fifty and visited Shobdon and Pembridge on the same day. Church Warden Gill Smith is seen talking to them about the Pembridge Tapestries. 2 The Rural Dean writes Friday June 24th was the day when, if we are to believe the politicians and commentators, The United Kingdom changed for ever. It changed for ever because the outcome of the referendum means that we are soon to begin the process of leaving the European Union. Many are delighted with the referendum result, but pretty much equally as many are distressed by it. However, the people have spoken, and our country must now move on into a new, uncharted and, by almost common consent, uncertain future. Whichever way they voted I think most people would agree that the “debate” leading up to the vote was not always the most edifying of spectacles. There were times when it deteriorated into the worst kind of “yah-boo” politics, with those on opposing sides slagging each other off, launching personal attacks on each other, and making outrageous claims and accusations against their opponents. There were times when, sadly, the plight of refugees, the hopes and dreams of migrants and even the appalling murder of an MP, Jo Cox, were used as ammunition in the fight to gain the upper hand. There were also times when, as I heard one commentator put it, it was very difficult for those of us looking on to know whose lies to believe. But all that is in the past now. The sun still came up the morning after the vote, even if it shone on a very different Britain. Life goes on, and will go on, and, as one wise friend said to me, We will find a way through…we always do. The tricky bit is going to be moving on together. Whatever else the vote results showed, they showed that the United Kingdom has never been less united. As a people, this vote split us right down the middle, and if we are to find a way through – as we must - then there is an awful lot of healing of wounds and divisions to be done. I believe it is vitally important that all people of faith in our country pray for healing, reconciliation and unity in the weeks and months ahead. I believe it is vitally important that all people in our country – of faith or not – put the past behind us, reach out to friends, neighbours, colleagues who were on “the other side”, and determine to work together for the better future we all hope for – for everyone. Whatever we might think about the referendum result, we are where we are. We won’t get to where we want to be unless we go there together. May this be our prayer and our aim… Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy.
