The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications by Helen Patterson A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Helen Patterson 2013 The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications Helen Patterson Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines the hymns of the Antiphonary of Bangor (AB) (Antiphonarium Benchorense, Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana C. 5 inf.) and considers its musical implications in medieval Ireland. Neither an antiphonary in the true sense, with chants and verses for the Office, nor a book with the complete texts for the liturgy, the AB is a unique Irish manuscript. Dated from the late seventh-century, the AB is a collection of Latin hymns, prayers and texts attributed to the monastic community of Bangor in Northern Ireland. Given the scarcity of information pertaining to music in early Ireland, the AB is invaluable for its literary insights. Studied by liturgical, medieval, and Celtic scholars, and acknowledged as one of the few surviving sources of the Irish church, the manuscript reflects the influence of the wider Christian world. The hymns in particular show that this form of poetical expression was significant in early Christian Ireland and have made a contribution to the corpus of Latin literature. Prompted by an earlier hypothesis that the AB was a type of choirbook, the chapters move from these texts to consider the monastery of Bangor and the cultural context from which the manuscript emerges. As the Irish peregrini are known to have had an impact on the continent, and the AB was recovered in ii Bobbio, Italy, it is important to recognize the hymns not only in terms of monastic development, but what they reveal about music. -

Bennett) This project – the first in-depth analysis of clerical concubinage in medieval England – examines cultural perceptions of clerical sexual misbehavior as well as the lived experiences of priests, concubines, and their children. Although much has been written on the imposition of priestly celibacy during the Gregorian Reform and on its rejection during the Reformation, the history of clerical concubinage between these two watersheds has remained largely unstudied. My analysis is based primarily on archival records from Hereford, a diocese in the West Midlands that incorporated both English- and Welsh-speaking parishes and combines the quantitative analysis of documentary evidence with a close reading of pastoral and popular literature. Drawing on an episcopal visitation from 1397, the act books of the consistory court, and bishops’ registers, I argue that clerical concubinage occurred as frequently in England as elsewhere in late medieval Europe and that priests and their concubines were, to some extent, socially and culturally accepted in late medieval England. -

Late Anglo-Saxon Finds from the Site of St Edmund's Abbey R. Gem, L. Keen
LATE ANGLO-SAXON FINDS FROM THE SITE OF ST EDMUND'S ABBEY by RICHARD GEM, M.A., PH.D., F.S.A. AND LAURENCE KEEN, M.PHIL., F.S.A., F.R.HIST.S. DURING SITE CLEARANCE of the eastern parts of the church of St Edmund's Abbey by the then Ministry of Works, followingtheir acceptance of the site into guardianship in 1955, two groups of important Anglo-Saxon material were found, but have remained unpublished until now. These comprise a series of fragments of moulded stone baluster shafts and a number of polychrome relief tiles. These are illustrated' and discussed here; it is concluded that the baluster shafts belong to around the second quarter of the 11th century or shortly thereafter; and that the tiles belong to the same period or, possibly, to the 10th century. HISTORY OF THE BUILDINGS OF ME LATE ANGLO-SAXON ABBEY The Tenth-Centwy Minster Whatever weight may be attached to the tradition that a minster was found at Boedericeswirdein the 7th century by King Sigberct, there can be little doubt that the ecclesiastical establishment there only rose to importance in the 10th century as a direct result of the translation to the royal vill of the relics of King Edmund (ob. 870);2this translation is recorded as having taken place in the reign of King Aethelstan (924 —39).3 Abbo of Fleury, writing in the late 10th century, saysthat the people of the place constructed a 'very large church of wonderful wooden plankwork' (permaxima miro ligneo tabulatu ecclesia) in which the relics were enshrined.' Nothing further is known about this building apart from this one tantalising reference. -

Procedures for Reverencing the Tabernacle and the Altar Before, During and After Mass Key Terms: Eucharist: The true presence of Christ in the form of his Body and Blood. During Mass, bread and wine are consecrated to become the Body and Blood of Christ. Whatever remains there are of the Body of Christ may be reserved and kept. Tabernacle: The box-like container in which the Eucharistic Bread may be reserved. Sacristy: The room in the church where the priest and other ministers prepare themselves for worship. Altar: The table upon which the bread and wine are blessed and made holy to become the Eucharist. Sanctuary: Often referred to as the Altar area, the Sanctuary is the proper name of the area which includes the Altar, the Ambo (from where the Scriptures are read and the homily may be given), and the Presider’s Chair. Nave: The area of the church where the majority of worshippers are located. This is where the Pews are. Genuflection: The act of bending one knee to the ground whilst making the sign of the Cross. Soon (maybe even next weekend – August 25-26) , the tabernacle will be re-located to behind the altar. How should I respond to the presence of the reserved Eucharist when it will now be permanently kept in the church sanctuary? Whenever you are in the church, you are in a holy place, walking upon holy ground. Everyone ought to be respectful of Holy Rosary Church as a house of worship and prayer. Respect those who are in silent prayer. -

RUNAWAY WIVES: HUSBAND DESERTION IN MEDIEVAL ENGLAND By Sara Butler Loyola University New Orleans Scholars of the medieval family would generally agree that the lot of the me- dieval wife was not an easy one. Medieval husbands held the upper hand in the power relationship, both legally and socially. Although Lawrence Stone's view of niarried life in the Middle Ages as "brutal and often hostile, with little communication, [and] much wife-beating" has since been called into question, more recent historians have still painted a somewhat unflattering picture.' Ju- dith Bennett writes that "[m]edieval people thought of conjugality as a hierar- chy headed by a husband who not only controlled his wife's financial assets and public behavior, but also freely enforced his will through physical violence."^ Indeed, she argues that wife-beating was "a normal part of marriage."^ Even Bar- bara Hanawalt, who has optimistically described peasant marriage in medieval England as a partnership, still concedes that occasional violence was acceptable and expected in marriage.'' What is more, the rules of coverture, which adhered to the biblical principal of husband and wife as one flesh represented at law by the husband, left a wife economically vulnerable. Because all real and movable property legally belonged to the husband as head of the household, a wife who fell out of favor with her husband might well find herself expelled from the family home, without any resources to fall back on.^ From a modern perspective, mari- tal practices hardly provided any sense of reassurance. At a time when families, more often than individuals, took the lead in spousal selection, and inheritance and status were the chief criteria, strong bonds of affection were not guaranteed. -

A Comparison of the Two Forms of the Roman Rite Mass Structures Orientation Language The purpose of this presentation is to prepare you for what will very likely be your first Traditional Latin Mass (TLM). This is officially named “The Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” We will try to do that by comparing it to what you already know - the Novus Ordo Missae (NOM). This is officially named “The Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” In “Mass Structures” we will look at differences in form. While the TLM really has only one structure, the NOM has many options. As we shall see, it has so many in fact, that it is virtually impossible for the person in the pew to determine whether the priest actually performs one of the many variations according to the rubrics (rules) for celebrating the NOM. Then, we will briefly examine the two most obvious differences in the performance of the Mass - the orientation of the priest (and people) and the language used. The orientation of the priest in the TLM is towards the altar. In this position, he is facing the same direction as the people, liturgical “east” and, in a traditional church, they are both looking at the tabernacle and/or crucifix in the center of the altar. The language of the TLM is, of course, Latin. It has been Latin since before the year 400. The NOM was written in Latin but is usually performed in the language of the immediate location - the vernacular. The Bishops Frome Parish has undertaken to prepare an NDP and this process has been subject to environmental appraisal pursuant to the SEA Directive. The Parish comprises of two main settlements of Bishops Frome itself, and Fromes Hill. Majority of the population live in these two settlements and the remainder are scattered in homes and farms throughout the parish. The parish of Bishops Frome lies approximately 9 miles north of Ledbury and four miles south of Bromyard. -

It is situated about four miles north east of Kidderminster in the county of Worcestershire. The Conservation Area encompasses a small rural hamlet containing buildings that mainly date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, together with adjoining landscape features. This document aims to set out the special architectural and historic characteristics of the Conservation Area.
