30-POINT SCORING GAMES - Jon Davis scored a Halton Arena record 38 points against Marshall (1/11) which marked his second career 30-point scoring game. Davis recorded his third career 30-point scoring game with 37 points against FIU (3/1). Charlotte has had a player score at least 30 points in a game 108 times in school history.

CONFERENCE USA HISTORY - The 49ers, who were an original member of Conference USA from 1995-2005, are in their sixth year back in Conference USA after spending eight years in the Atlantic 10. During the 49ers time in Conference USA, Charlotte has captured two Conference USA Tournament titles (1999 and 2001) and a share of the 2004 Conference USA regular-season title. During the 49ers’ 15 years in Conference USA, Charlotte has made seven trips to the NCAA Tournament and one trip to the NIT. The 49ers have compiled an overall record of 254-209 and a Conference USA record of 130-112 during their 16 years in Confer- ence USA. Six times the 49ers have won 20 games while a member of Conference USA. Two former 49ers standouts (DeMarco Johnson - 1998 and Eddie Basden - 2005) were named Conference USA Player of the Year. Former 49ers coach Melvin Watkins was named Conference USA Coach of the Year in 1997. Basden earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year honors twice (2004 and 2005). Rodney White was the 2001 Conference USA Freshman of the Year and Torin Dorn was 2015 Conference USA Freshman of the Year. Seven different 49ers earned first-team All-Conference USA honors. Galen Young was named Conference USA Tournament MVP in 1999 and Rodney White was named C-USA Tourney MVP in 2001.

Sanchez had been an integral part of three-time National Coach of the Year Tony Record at Charlotte: First Season Bennett’s staff for the last 12 years as they built Washington State and Virginia Career Record: First Season into national powers during their tenures.

Coach, 2006-09 For the last nine years, he has been a part of Bennett’s staff at nationally-ranked Washington State Dir. of Ops, 2003-06 Virginia, including the past three seasons as associate head coach. During his time Indiana Volunteer Asst. Coach, 2001-03 at Virginia, the Cavaliers have won 212 games, three ACC regular-season titles and two ACC Tournament titles, while making six appearances in the NCAA SUNY Delhi Assoc. Head Coach, 1999-01 Tournament and one NIT Appearance. The Cavaliers have earned an NCAA num- SUNY Oneonta Assistant Coach, 1998-99 ber one seed, three times. Virginia has won 29 or more games in four of the last five years.

ESPN Insider listed Sanchez among the top recruiters in the nation. CBSSports.com listed Sanchez as one of the top assistant coaches in the country who are likely to be head coaching stars.

In the 2017-18 season, Sanchez played a major role in helping Virginia reach number one in the national polls while winning a school-record 31 games.

Before his time on the coaching staff at Virginia, Sanchez was an assistant coach at Washington State. While at Washington State, the Cougars played in the NCAA Tournament twice and the NIT once. In 2006-07 and 2007-08, the Cougars tied the school-record with 26 wins. In 2008, the Cougars reached the Sweet 16 and played in Charlotte’s Spectrum Center. He played a major role in the recruitment of NBA All-Star and former Washington State standout Klay Thompson.

Prior to becoming an assistant coach at Washington State, he spent three seasons as the program’s director of basketball operations from 2003-06. Prior to those three years, he spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Indiana. While at Indiana, Sanchez earned a master’s degree in athletic administration/ sports management. During his two seasons at Indiana, the Hoosiers reached the NCAA Tournament Championship game in 2002.

Sanchez is a 1997 graduate of the State University of New York College at Oneonta where he starred on the basketball team. He earned State University of New York Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship Most Valuable Player honors in 1996.

Sanchez began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater for the 1998-99 season. Then, he was the associate head coach at Delhi College (N.Y.) for two years (1999-01). In the 2000-01 season, Delhi won 31 games, captured the Region III championship and finished fourth in the National Junior College Athletic Association Championship Tournament.

Not only has he enjoyed success as a college basketball coach but in the summer of 2013, Sanchez was an assistant coach for the Dominican Republic National Team, which finished fourth at the FIBA Americas Championship to qualify for the 2014 FIBA World Championships for the first time since 1978.

Sanchez and his wife, Tara, have a son, Raelon, and a daughter, Rose Marie.

Coaching Staff

Aaron Fearne Assistant Coach First Season Aaron Fearne is in his first season on the Charlotte 49ers coaching staff. Fearne joins the 49ers coaching staff after spending the last nine years as head coach of the National Basketball League’s Cairns Taipans, which plays in Australia’s top professional league. In his nine seasons at the helm of the Taipans, he coached in 264 games and guided them to three appearances in the NBL playoffs. In 2011, he led the team to an appearance in the NBL Finals. In 2015, he coached the Taipans to a record 21 wins and another ap- pearance in the league finals while garnering NBL Coach of the Year honors. In 2017, he guided the Taipans to a second place finish in the regular-season and a trip to the NBL semifinals. Prior to becoming head coach, Fearne spent seven seasons (2001-08) as an assistant coach for the Taipans. During that time, he also served as the head coach of the Cairns Taipans Academy, which is a junior development academy which he created. Boston Celtics center Aron Baynes and former NBA player Nathan Jawai came out of the Academy. For four seasons, he was head coach of the Cairns Marlins (2006-09) which plays in the Queensland Basketball League. In 2006 and 2007, he earned Queensland Basketball League Coach of the Year honors. In 2007 and 2009, he helped the Marlins capture the league title. In 2007, he guided the Marlins to the Australian Basketball Association National Championship. Fearne also enjoyed a successful playing career in Australia. From 1998-2005, he played for the Marlins. As a player, he helped the Marlins capture two national championships. From 1999-2001, he played for the Taipans. Fearne, who is from Cairns, Queensland, Australia, played college basketball in the United States. He played the 1993-94 season at Western Wisconsin Technical College. Then, he played the 1994-95 season at Mid-State Technical College where he earned an associate’s degree. He played his final two seasons at Mayville State University in Mayville, North Dakota. In 1997, he graduated from Mayville State with a degree in Business Administration. Fearne and his wife Amy have a son, Tyler and a daughter, Jasmine. Kotie Kimble Assistant Coach Kotie Kimble is in his first season on the Charlotte 49ers coaching staff. Kimble joins the 49ers coaching staff after spending the last seven years as an assistant coach at William & Mary. During his time on the coaching staff at William & Mary, the Tribe posted three of the program’s eight 20-win seasons while cap- turing the Colonial Athletic Association’s regular-season title in 2015 and reaching the CAA Tournament Championship game in 2014 and 2015. During that stretch, William & Mary averaged 16 wins per season. Kimble helped the Tribe to three-straight 20-win seasons in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16, a first at W&M since 1949-51. The Tribe offense has ranked among the best in the country during Kimble’s tenure. Over the last six years, W&M is one of only two schools (along with Gonzaga) to rank among the top 30 nationally in field goal percentage. Before joining the coaching staff at William & Mary, Kimble spent three seasons as an assistant coach at UNC Asheville on Eddie Biedenbach’s coaching staff. Vic Sfera Assistant Coach First Season Vic Sfera is in his first season at Charlotte after spending the last two seasons as assistant coach at Liberty University. During his time on the coaching staff at Liberty, the Flames won 43 games, reached the 2018 Big South Conference Tournament Championship game and advanced to at least the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2017 and 2018. Prior to joining the coaching staff at Liberty, Sfera spent four seasons on the coaching staff at the University of Virginia. He spent two season as technology assistant from 2010-12. He returned to the Virginia coaching staff in 2014 where he spent two seasons as the director of scouting/recruiting. During his time at Virginia, the Cavaliers made three NCAA Tournament appearances and one trip to the Elite Eight and won an ACC regular-season championship. Between his two stints at Virginia, he spent two seasons (2012-14) as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona. During his time at Northern Arizona, he helped the Lumberjacks advance to the Big Sky Conference Tournament each year and saw one of the biggest turnarounds in program history. He was primarily responsible for coaching the perimeter players, opponent scouting and recruiting. In 2016, he was a member of the technical staff for the U16 Romanian national team and worked with the team during the 2016 FIBA European Championships. Sfera’s responsibilities included preparation, assisting the coaching staff with scouting and player development. In 2010, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Memphis in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in behavioral sciences and sport studies. He earned his master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University in 2013. During his senior year at Memphis, he served as head team manager during the 2009-10 season. The Southern California native began his collegiate coaching career as a student assistant coach and video coordinator under NAIA Hall of Fame coach Dr. Dave Holmquist at Biola University in La Mirada, California. He was involved in the Eagles’ game preparation, player development and recruiting efforts, and helped Biola advance to the 2009 NAIA National Tournament. In 2006-07, he served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Capistrano Valley Christian School under San Diego High School Hall of Champions coach Randy Wright. Sfera also served as a head coach with the North Orange County Stars AAU program and assisted with the California Summer Pro League. Sfera played collegiately at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, Calif., after prepping at Capistrano Valley Christian School where he was an All-Academy League selection and one of the top three-point shooters in the CIF-Southern Section.
