Dear John – the Sebastian Collection Dear John – the Sebastian Collection Now I know a little about the Everly Brothers, a little about Gordon Lightfoot, and even less about a whole host of other great singer/songwriters. But I don’t know a lot about John Sebastian other than he played guitar and harmonica for Tim Hardin and Fred Neil back in the mid-60s; he was featured strongly in Creeque Alley, John Phillips’ ode to California Dreaming; he made good time music a reality with the Lovin’ Spoonful; he provided the opening (acoustic) act at Woodstock when everyone’s electrics were flooded out; he inspired no less than John and June to pay homage to him; he allowed the Everly Brothers into his lounge to close off their RCA debut with long-time collaborator Paul Rothschild; oh and he gave John Travolta a pretty big kick up the ladder by writing a very simple theme tune called ‘Welcome Back’ in the mid-70s. But what I do know about John Sebastian is that he is just about one of the most talented musicians, songwriters, and performers of a generation. And this collection is the living proof. I’ve been doing this job for a few years now but have Fred Neil, partly under the only just achieved my ambition of starting a tutelage of producer Paul compilation with a ‘Finale’. I Rothschild. • Mark Needham
INSIDE TRACK PAUL TINGEN n his fifth decade as a top-level engineer, mixer and producer, Mark I Needham could be forgiven for being a bit of a traditionalist. Instead he’s an early adopter, who has eagerly embraced digital innovation. For example, he was not only one of the first to get Slate Digital’s Raven MTX touchscreen DAW controller, but he even asked the company to build him a custom dual-screen version. Acquiring the Dual Raven was the culmination of Needham’s gradual move from working in analogue to working entirely in the box, which began in 2004. He recalls: “As the sound of digital and of plug-ins got better and better, I had to ask myself: this UAD EQP1A plug-in sounds just as good as the two EQP1As I have in my rack, so why am I paying for maintenance on those and trying to do recalls on them? The maintenance of a large format console and outboard, and the AC to keep everything cool, is a big expense. “I initially got pushback from some labels because I was switching to in-the-box, but to me it seemed like everything was heading that way. I was fully in the box by 2010, because, with bands and labels expecting six or seven recalls, the instant recall capacity became paramount. For decades I used an SSL G console, and I can count on my hands the Secrets Of The Mix Engineers: amount of times a recall sounded exactly the same. Instead, it usually needed an Mark Needham hour and a half of re-patching, and then another hour of tweaking, to get everything Fleetwood Mac stalwarts Lindsey Buckingham sounding exactly the same as before.” Today Needham mixes about 400 songs and Christine McVie have enjoyed long musical a year, and frequently works on 10 projects in a single day — sessions that may contain careers — as has their engineer, mixer and 200-plus tracks with 10 plug-ins per track.

  • FRED NEIL LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
FRED NEIL LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. Fred Neil (16 th March 1936 –7th July 2001) was one of the most compelling folk singer-songwriters in the 1960s and early 1970s. His marvellously deep, rich and impossibly low baritone enchanted everyone who has ever heard a Fred Neil song - and continues to do so. Surely one of the most beautiful voices in music. Bob Dylan said, “Fred had a strong, powerful voice, almost a bass voice, and a powerful sense of rhythm. He used to play mostly the type of songs that Josh White might sing. I used to sing and play harmonica for him, and then once in a while get to sing a song.” Yet as performer success eluded Fred, mainly because it was the last thing he pursued. A reluctance to tour didn’t help much either (a trait he shared with Bobby Charles and Harry Nilsson). According to his producer, Nik Venet, Fred was “probably the most famous and financially successful ‘cult artist’ in the history of the world...and could have been even bigger if he’d wanted to be....but he just didn’t!” Fred Neil showed up unexpectedly and was gone before you knew it. A loner and somewhat of a recluse, he was exceedingly hard to get to know and thus remained an enigma to most. John Sebastian, who played on his two Elektra albums, describes his background as “sketchy”. He is best known to the world through other people’s recordings of his material, such as ‘Everybody’s Talkin’’, made famous by Harry Nilsson as the theme to the movie Midnight Cowboy (and earned a Grammy) and ‘Other Side of This Life’, recorded by several but most notably by Jefferson Airplane.

Guess what? We have just celebrated our 18th anniversary. Those who try things we recommend are rewarded. We have stayed in business for one reason and that is we have never attempted to appeal to the lowest common denominator as mainstream outlets do. At the same time we recognise that people do have different tastes and to some CMT is actually good. We also appeal to those people and offer many mainstream items in our bargain bin. But the legends and true country music are our bread butter and will always be. If you see something you think you may like but are worried let us know. If you pass our inquisition we may be able to send it on a sale or return basis. I say inquisition because if your favourite artists are SheDaisy and Rascal Flatts we certainly aren’t going to risk something as precious as Justin Trevino. By the same token we believe great music is timeless and knows no bounds. People may think chuck steak is good until they try the best rump! Recently I had the pleasure of seeing Dale Watson. Before hand I had the added pleasure of sitting in with my compatriot Eddie White (a.k.a. “The Cosmic Cowboy”) for an interview at the 2RRR Studios. Dale is a humble, engaging and extremely likeable man with a passion for tradition.
