INSIDE TRACK PAUL TINGEN n his fifth decade as a top-level engineer, mixer and producer, Mark I Needham could be forgiven for being a bit of a traditionalist. Instead he’s an early adopter, who has eagerly embraced digital innovation. For example, he was not only one of the first to get Slate Digital’s Raven MTX touchscreen DAW controller, but he even asked the company to build him a custom dual-screen version. Acquiring the Dual Raven was the culmination of Needham’s gradual move from working in analogue to working entirely in the box, which began in 2004. He recalls: “As the sound of digital and of plug-ins got better and better, I had to ask myself: this UAD EQP1A plug-in sounds just as good as the two EQP1As I have in my rack, so why am I paying for maintenance on those and trying to do recalls on them? The maintenance of a large format console and outboard, and the AC to keep everything cool, is a big expense. “I initially got pushback from some labels because I was switching to in-the-box, but to me it seemed like everything was heading that way. I was fully in the box by 2010, because, with bands and labels expecting six or seven recalls, the instant recall capacity became paramount. For decades I used an SSL G console, and I can count on my hands the Secrets Of The Mix Engineers: amount of times a recall sounded exactly the same. Dear John – the Sebastian Collection Now I know a little about the Everly Brothers, a little about Gordon Lightfoot, and even less about a whole host of other great singer/songwriters. But I don’t know a lot about John Sebastian other than he played guitar and harmonica for Tim Hardin and Fred Neil back in the mid-60s; he was featured strongly in Creeque Alley, John Phillips’ ode to California Dreaming; he made good time music a reality with the Lovin’ Spoonful; he provided the opening (acoustic) act at Woodstock when everyone’s electrics were flooded out; he inspired no less than John and June to pay homage to him; he allowed the Everly Brothers into his lounge to close off their RCA debut with long-time collaborator Paul Rothschild; oh and he gave John Travolta a pretty big kick up the ladder by writing a very simple theme tune called ‘Welcome Back’ in the mid-70s. But what I do know about John Sebastian is that he is just about one of the most talented musicians, songwriters, and performers of a generation. And this collection is the living proof. I’ve been doing this job for a few years now but have Fred Neil, partly under the only just achieved my ambition of starting a tutelage of producer Paul compilation with a ‘Finale’. I Rothschild. PART IX: 1960s Musiciansi The Hotel Albert became home to any number of rock musicians in the 1960s. This is the only part of the Albert‟s history that has been written about to any extent, chronicled in May 1968 an article in The Eye magazine by Lillian Roxon, author of Lillian Roxon’s Rock Encyclopedia. Roxon, a music journalist of the 1960s, has been called the “Mother of Rock.” Her article about the Hotel Albert called it the “New York home to rock‟s greatest.” It opens: It is the best of hotels, it is the worst of hotels; its prices are ridiculously high, its prices are astonishingly low; its corridors are filled to the brim with life, its corridors are perpetual reminders of death; staying there is the wildest, most exhilarating, dizzying, around-the-clock trip of all time; staying there is the most wretched, lonely terrifying, around-the-clock bummer of all eternity. So much for New York‟s Hotel Albert, whose distinction is not that it has housed some of the most influential rock personalities of our time (after all, so has Holiday Inn), but that it has affected them so deeply (in a way no impersonal Holiday Inn could ever hope to) that American popular music would probably never have been what it is today without it. Roxon lists dozens of musicians who stayed at the Albert: …the Paul Butterfield Blues Band got itself together under its roof;… Steve Gillette wrote his Sunshine Company hit there (“Back on the Street Again”), but was able to finish his other songs only after he moved out, which, in itself, is influence of a sort.

Blues, soul, rock'n'roll, jazz, and folk are recorded in the Bay Area throughout the 1940s and 1950s, without establishing a strong regional identity for San Francisco popular music. Key artists include: Lowell Fulson, Jimmy McCracklin, Vince Guaraldi, Bobby Freeman, Barbara Dane, and the Kingston Trio. B. San Francisco radio DJ Tom Donahue helps establish a rock label, Autumn Records, that gets one of the first Beatles-styled national hits by an American group with the Beau Brummels. Key artists: The Beau Brummels, the Mojo Men, the Vejtables. C. Kingston Trio manager Frank Werber handles We Five, who have one of the first folk-rock hits with "You Were on My Mind" in 1965. Meanwhile, the Beau Brummels mature from British Invasion imitators into a folk-rock sound of their own. Key artists: We Five, the Beau Brummels. Other themes: the growth of independent record labels and studios in the Bay Area; the power of local radio DJs and AM radio stations. II. The Birth of Underground San Francisco Rock A. Most of the info in the book was familiar to me via various Goldmine, Hit Parader, Fusion articles read collected over the past 50 years, but it is nice to have in one place, even if it is Kindle. Since it is Kindle, are allowances made for misinformation (minor, but a proof reader would've helped), lack of sources, etc? Minor points, Warm Baby is on the 2nd lp Daydream, not their 1st and the Sammy Davis reference is from Hullabloo not Hollywood Palace, again minor but if some things I know are wrong, what about other items I'm am less familiar with.I learned the band was like any other, individuals complaining of lack of acknowledgement of contributions, others rewriting history, in- group jealousies, personality clashes and surprise, surprise.....Money!I knew Sebastian was whipped, but I had no idea.
