Jónsdóttir Marine and Freshwater Research Institute Iceland [email protected] [email protected] ABSTRACT Seabob (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri) is the most exploited shrimp species in Guyana and the largest seafood export. This species is mostly caught by seabob trawlers, sometimes with large quantities of bycatch. The goal of this paper is to promote the long-term sustainability of marine stocks impacted by this fishery, by analysing 1) shrimp stock status, 2) the current state of knowledge regarding bycatch impacts, and 3) spatial fishing patterns of seabob trawlers. To address the first, the paper discusses a stock assessment on Guyana`s seabob stock using the Stochastic Surplus Production Model in Continuous-Time (SPiCT). The model output suggests that the stock is currently in an overfished state, i.e., that the predicted Absolute Stock Biomass (Bt) for 2018 is four times smaller than the Biomass which yields Maximum Sustainable Yield at equilibrium (BMSY) and the current fishing mortality (Ft) is six times above the required to achieve Fishing Mortality which results in Maximum Sustainable Yield at equilibrium (FMSY). These results indicate a more overfished state than was generated by the previous stock assessment which concluded that the stock was fully exploited but not overfished (Medley, 2013).To address the second goal, the study linked catch and effort data with spatial Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data to analyse the mixture of target and non-target species within the seabob fishery.

Laguna de Tamiahua is ecologically and economically important as a nursery area that favours the recruitment of species that sustain traditional fisheries. It has been studied previously, though not throughout its whole area, and considering the variety of habitats that sustain these fisheries, as well as an increase in population growth that impacts the system. The objectives of this study were to present an updated list of fish species, data on special status, new records, commercial importance, dominance, density, ecotic position, and the spatial and temporal distribution of species in the lagoon, together with a comparison of Tamiahua with 14 other Gulf of Mexico lagoons. Materials and methods. Fish were collected in August and December 1996 with a Renfro beam net and an otter trawl from different habitats throughout the lagoon. The species were identified, classified in relation to special status, new records, commercial importance, density, dominance, ecotic position, and spatial distribution patterns.

RESUMEN Se estudiaron algunos aspectos de la biología y ecología de la curvinata Plagioscion squamosissimus, en los llanos inundables del Estado Apure, Venezuela, durante dos años de muestreo. Mediante el uso de los métodos de frecuencia de aparición y volumen total o volumétrico, se determinó que P. squamosissimus es un pez carnívoro, con predo- minio de peces y camarones en su dieta. Se observaron cambios ontogenéticos en la dieta, especialización alimentaria y canibalismo. La curvinata presenta una reproducción continua con mayor intensidad a principios y mediados de la época seca y mediados de la lluviosa. Se obtuvo una fecundidad absoluta máxima de 371.025 ovocitos y una talla mínima reproductiva de 205 mm de LE. Se evidencia un tipo de desove parcial y continuo. Las capturas fueron más importantes en términos de abundancia y biomasa relativas en las áreas inundables periféricas que en el río.

It is endemic to West Java, Indonesia, specifically around Mount Gede, Mount Pangaro and south of Sukabumi. The Bleeding Toad’s scientific name, cruentata, is from the Latin word meaning “bleeding” because of the frog’s overall reddish-purple appearance and blood-red and yellow marbling on its back. Geographical range The population declined drastically after the eruption of Mount Galunggung in 1987. It is Knowledge believed that other declining factors may be habitat alteration, loss, and fragmentation. Experts Although the lethal chytrid fungus, responsible for devastating declines (and possible Get Involved extinctions) in amphibian populations globally, has not been recorded in this area, the sudden decline in a creekside population is reminiscent of declines in similar amphibian species due to the presence of this pathogen. Only one individual Bleeding Toad was sighted from 1990 to 2003. Part of the range of Bleeding Toad is located in Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park. Future conservation actions should include population surveys and possible captive breeding plans. E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT We recorded 31 species in the stomachs of 146 coastal bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatu) from North Carolina, U.S.A. Sciaenid fishes were the most common prey (frequency of occurrence = 95%). By mass, Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) dominated the diet of dolphins that stranded inside estuaries, whereas weakfish (Cynosicon regalis) was most important for dolphins in the ocean. Inshore squid (Loligo sp.) was eaten commonly by dolphins in the ocean, but not by those in the estuaries. There was no significant pattern in prey size associated with dolphin demography, but the proportion of the diet represented by croaker was higher for males than for females, and mature dolphins ate more croaker than did juveniles. Dietary differences between dolphins that stranded in the estuaries and those that stranded on ocean beaches support the hypothesis that some members of the population inhabit the ocean primarily while others reside principally in estuaries. The overwhelming majority of prey were soniferous species (75% of numerical abundance), which is consistent with the hypothesis that bottlenose dolphins use passive listening to locate noise-making fishes. However, spatiotemporal patterns in consumption of Sciaenid fishes did not coincide with their spawning, which is when peak sound production is thought to occur.
