Voices of Eternal Spring: A study of the Hingcun diau Song Family and Other Folk Songs of the Hingcun Area, Taiwan Submitted for PhD By Chien Shang-Jen Department of Music University of Sheffield January 2009 Chapter Four The Developmental Process and Historical Background of Hingcun Diau and Its Song Family Introduction The previous three chapters of this thesis detailed the three major systems of Taiwanese folksongs - Aboriginal, Holo and Hakka. Concentrating on the area of Hingcun, one of the primary cradles of Holo folksongs, these three chapters also explored how the geographical conditions, natural landscape, and historical and cultural background of the area influence local folksongs and what the mutual relations between these factors and the local folksongs are. Furthermore, the three chapters studied in depth not only the background, characteristics and cultural influences of each of the Hingcun folk songs but also local prominent folksong figures, major accompanying musical instruments, musical activities and so on. Chapter Four narrows the focus specifically to Hingcun diau and its song family. In this chapter, on the one hand, I examine carefully the changes in Hingcun diau and its song family activated from within a culture; on the other hand, I also pay attention to the changes in these songs caused by their contact with other cultures.1 In other words, in addition to a careful study of the origin, developmental process and historical background of Hingcun diau and its song family, I shall also dissect how the interaction of different ethnic groups, languages used in the area, political and economic factors, and various local cultures influence Hingcun diau and its song family, and what the mutual relations between the former factors and Hingcun diau and its song family are.

“Home” can be defined as a place where we want to connect with our true self, share priceless moments with near and dear ones; find eternal peace and discover the joys of living. In the rat race that we have all jumped into, we have forgotten the true meaning of the word “living”. We have created commitments, routines & complicated lifestyles that we have stitched around our already mundane existence. As “bread earners”, we have to take care our work/business, our children’s needs, wife’s demands, and aging parents. Wonder where one can find one’s “Me Time”? We merely exist for others. The “Lady” of the home is multitasking as an ideal housewife, a perfect mother, a career woman and a modern socialite. She is totally fatigued, juggling between her housework, workplace, husband’s demands, children’s tuitions and doctor’s appointments, and yet keeps her aging and demanding in-laws happy! I have a dream ...........that you would love to call home “Children”, the life of every home, are already feeling the pressure An environment that enables you to fulfill all your roles in a of the pseudo world that they have arrived in. • 4 Seven Bible Studies 2017 Poetry-Song of Solomon
Seven Bible Studies 2017 Poetry December 7: Song of Solomon 1-2 (Kevin Crittenden) SONG OF SOLOMON Week 49 Poetry Reading for 12/07/17 Song of Solomon 1-2. Alternative reading, Song of Songs 1-2. INTRODUCTION Hello and welcome to the reading of Song of Solomon! So please turn to page 358 in the grey songbook. In my vast experience, (and by “vast”, I mean from here to my front door), this book isn’t taught very often in church. Is this because there isn’t much to be gleaned from it? Let’s see. For my comments, I am leaning on the wisdom in the book by Douglas Sean O’Donnell, entitled “The Song of Solomon: An Invitation to Intimacy.” Genesis chapter 2 talks about the creation of Adam and Eve, as well as the planting of the garden in the east, in Eden. Certainly, there is an account of the trees of the garden, good to eat (except one!), and the wild animals and birds. All these things were good. We will see that Songs also has a wealth of imagery related to gardens and animals. Thus, we might say that Songs is a poetic reimagining of Genesis chapter 2. Our reading seems to have two names, either “Song of Solomon” or “Song of Songs.” The very first verse says something about this: Song 1:1 The Song of Songs, which is Solomon's. Solomon wrote this, (although some would argue that this is not certain, nor is the earth round), and, just as the Holy of Holies describes the Most Holy Place, then the Song of Songs is the best of all songs.

Box 945 Oxford, NC 27565 The Silver Lining Winter 2004 Dear Members, Our newsletter is back in printing after a year due to lack of funding. The past 2 years have been very hard on the economy and hard on CHERUBS. Voluntary membership fees are paid by less than 5% of our 1400 families, we still do not have grant funding, and we are subsisting solely on donations, which have greatly decreased. Donations and membership fees pay for our newsletter printing, mailing costs, new member info packets, web site fees, and phone costs. We have no paid employees and we have moved the office back to my home to greatly reduce overhead. I am asking all of you to please make tax-deductible holiday donations if you can so that we can continue our work. Because of lack of donations and membership fees, for the first time in our history we regretfully are implementing a new Silver Lining subscription for all those who wish to receive the newsletter by postal mail. It will still be available to download for free on our web site but we are now requiring a $20.00 annual subscription fee for printed copies. If you are not on-line and cannot afford to subscribe to the newsletter, please fill in the appropriate box on the form found in the back of this newsletter and we will try our best to make sure that you continue to receive a copy of our newsletter.
