Syllabus for BSS (Honours) programme in Journalism and Media Studies (2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2013-2014, 2014-2015, First year new 2015-2016)

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies of Jahangirnagar University is an outstanding and vibrant department started with a view to fostering the media and communication education in the country. Since its inception in 2011 the Department of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) is committed to bring the level of excellence in journalism and media education that will create human resources capable of leading media world home and abroad. It is aspired that the erudition passed to the learners from this department will usher the political, economic, and social development of the country. It is also expected that knowledge generated here would create an information-society in the country. Apart from following BSS (Hons) course in due course of time the Department will offer MSS, M. Phil and Ph. D degree for enhancing the knowledge of graduates and facilitating higher education in journalism and media studies.

Objective The courses of the syllabus for BSS (Honours) in Journalism and Media Studies put emphasis on interrelationship among media, society culture and technological advancement that impinge in the development process of the country. History, structure and organization of mass communication, techniques of media reporting, art of editing, new media and information technology, communication research and the political, social culture and economic contemporary issues of home and abroad are given considerable emphasis in the courses.

About the Programme 1. Courses of study for an Honours degree will extend over a period of four academic years and examinations will be held after completion of each year. Students will take a total of 35 courses over the four academic years of the BSS (Honours) programme. 2. The total marks for the four-year programme is 3100. The courses contain a total of 2900 marks, and for Viva- voce 200 marks (50 x 4 years). The year wise distribution of marks for the courses is as follows: First year-700; Second year-700; Third year-900 and Final year- 800.

Grading System In grading system marks will be distributed for each full unit (100 marks) 10 for attendance + 20 for tutorial + 70 for written examinations and for each half unit (50 marks) 5 for attendance + 10 for tutorial + 35 for written. The distribution of marks will be as shown in the details. Total marks will be 3100 including course work, tutorial, viva-voce and comprehensive examination. Results of the students will be decided on the performance of the students in the four years taken together. Comprehensive course is designed in such a way so that after the completion of the Bachelor degree students are able to express inclusive ideas on the subjects taught.

JMS 101: Concepts of Communication (Theoretical) Course Objectives: This course is designed to help students understand the basic concepts, processes, and issues of communication. It is expected that after completion of the course, students will be able to make use of the different aspects and processes of communication for efficient communication.

Course Content: Brief history of communication; concepts and definitions of communication; scopes and purposes of communication; natures of human communication; models of communication process; functions of communication; types of communication; roles and levels of communication; language and verbal communication; nonverbal communication; perception; listening; and self in communication.

JMS 102: Concepts of Journalism (Theoretical & Practical) Course Objectives: This course is designed to give the students basic understanding of journalism as a distinct practice and profession along with its core concepts and issues.

Course Content: Definitions, scopes and forms of journalism; functions of journalism; social responsibilities of journalists; definitions and characteristics of news; news values and elements; classification of news and news sources; news flow into media houses; content of newspapers (news, editorial, post-editorial, standing material, feature, article, advertisement); ethics of journalism; the press and the law; pressure on the press; terminology; citizen journalism; and freedom of expression. JMS 105: Bangla for Media (Theoretical) Course Objectives: This course helps the students develop Bangla writing skills. Emphasis is given on learning different forms of Bangla, used in writing news, feature, and article for the print, online, and electronic media.

Course Content: Appropriate use of Bangla grammar; principles of Bangla spelling; techniques of Bangla language composition; essay writing; book review; and translation.

JMS 106: English for Media (Theoretical) Course Objectives: This course is designed to help the students learn the basics of English writing skills, which will help them master the art of writing news reports, articles and features for the print, online, and electronic media.

Course Content: Introduction to English language and writing skills; fundamentals of English grammar; techniques of writing correct sentences; appropriate use of words and phrases; paragraph writing; techniques of sentence corrections; English composition and comprehension; essential elements of writing; developing writing style; techniques of vocabulary build-up; and techniques of speaking and listening.

JMS 107: Computer Skills (Theoretical & Practical) Course Objectives: This course aims to introduce the students to basic computing skills, use of different computer applications and efficient internet browsing. The students will also be given ideas about the basic hardware formation of a computer and networking.

Course Content: Techniques of using the primary applications of programmes like MS Word, MS Excel, MS Power Point; internet browsing; techniques of changing file formats (i.e. MS Word files into PDF format); using a web-browser, opening emails; techniques of uploading and downloading files; using elementary level software; and formation of CPU. Alongside giving the students theoretical knowledge, they will be oriented with the practical applications of computer and networking.

Practical: Practical work will be done on the basis of the content taught under this course.

*Marks Distribution: The total 35 marks of the year-final examination will be distributed into two separate examinations -- 25 paper-based and 10 computer-based.

Course objective: This course is designed to teach students the concepts and fundamentals of economics, and principal of economic institutions. Alongside the fundamentals of economics, the students will learn about the key financial institutions and issues often cover by the news media.

Course Code and Title JMS 304: Broadcast Journalism

Course objective: The course focuses on the theory and practice of radio and television journalism. It covers the techniques of reporting and editing news for radio and television. It sheds light on the growth and development of the electronic media, programme, commercial and newscasting.

Course contents: Growth and development of radio and television; basics of TV and radio reporting; differences between print and broadcast journalism; types of bulletin; techniques of broadcast news writing; spot coverage; interviewing; presentation: qualities of a presenter; programmes, commercials and news-casting, TV/radio news production, terminology. Course objective: This course aims to provide to the students the in depth perspectives on development journalism and provides the knowledge, skills and techniques for building strong relationship between communication and development. It also takes a critical look at the field of Development Communication in national and international contexts.
