It has a strong impact among the audience as the appeal of Bengali folk-drama is undeniable. ‘Bolan’ is a traditional folk drama of Bengal which is mainly celebrated in the month of ‘Chaitra’ (march-april). Geographically, it is prevalent in the mid- northern rural and semi-urban regions of Bengal (Rar Banga area) – mainly in Murshidabad district and some parts of Nadia, Birbhum and Bardwan districts. Although it follows the theatrical procedures, yet it is different from the same because it has no female artists. The male actors impersonate as females and play the part. Like other folk drama ‘Bolan’ is in direct contact with the audience and is often interacted and modified by them. Primarily it narrates mythological themes but now-a-days it narrates contemporary socio-politico-economical and natural issues. As it is performed different contemporary issues of immense interest audiences is deeply integrated with it and try to assimilate the messages of social importance from it. And in this way Mass (traditional) media plays an important role in shaping public opinion and forming a platform of exchange between the administration and the people they serve. -

SETTING THE STAGE: A MATERIALIST SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF CONTEMPORARY BENGALI GROUP THEATRE FROM KOLKATA, INDIA by ARNAB BANERJI (Under the Direction of Farley Richmond) ABSTRACT This dissertation studies select performance examples from various group theatre companies in Kolkata, India during a fieldwork conducted in Kolkata between August 2012 and July 2013 using the materialist semiotic performance analysis. Research into Bengali group theatre has overlooked the effect of the conditions of production and reception on meaning making in theatre. Extant research focuses on the history of the group theatre, individuals, groups, and the socially conscious and political nature of this theatre. The unique nature of this theatre culture (or any other theatre culture) can only be understood fully if the conditions within which such theatre is produced and received studied along with the performance event itself. This dissertation is an attempt to fill this lacuna in Bengali group theatre scholarship. Materialist semiotic performance analysis serves as the theoretical framework for this study. The materialist semiotic performance analysis is a theoretical tool that examines the theatre event by locating it within definite material conditions of production and reception like organization, funding, training, availability of spaces and the public discourse on theatre. The data presented in this dissertation was gathered in Kolkata using: auto-ethnography, participant observation, sample survey, and archival research. The conditions of production and reception are each examined and presented in isolation followed by case studies. The case studies bring the elements studied in the preceding section together to demonstrate how they function together in a performance event. The studies represent the vast array of theatre in Kolkata and allow the findings from the second part of the dissertation to be tested across a variety of conditions of production and reception. -

SYLLABUS British rule in India Establishment of British rule in India: Factors behind British success against Indian powers:- ● The British had firmly established their position by the middle of the nineteenth century and a large part of India came under their direct rule. ● The areas that remained independent were indirectly under British influence. There are various reasons for the success of the British rule against Indian rulers and some of them are listed as follows: Vacuum of power:- ● There was a vacuum of power in India after the Mughal Empire got fractured falling under its own weight. ● Its various governors and rebel commanders established their superiority at different places and started fighting against each other. This gave the British the opportunity to establish their trading posts in India. Flag followed the trade:- ● These trading posts were used to store the goods and for that British built many warehouses, which gave them an excuse to build forts and to build up armies to "protect" them. ● The East India Company made treaties with most of the kings to keep them satisfied so that they would not try and fight against the British. Lack of unity among Indian states:- ● Even though there were powerful Indian states like Punjab, Mysore and the Marathas that ruled Indian subcontinent during the mid-19th century, many of them were fighting with each other for different reasons. -

Media is very powerful that plays a significant role in shaping public opinions and beliefs. Manufacturing consent by mass media for its own sake by using selective or propaganda news is a dormant question in present world especially in Bangladesh where massive media boom occurred after post millennium period. Political influence and pressure from the Government, self censorship by journalists due to stress from upper hierarchy are just some of the factors that affects viewer’s perception. Media is now playing a role for a change agent or a mediator of setting agenda. In this paper, the present problems underlying these facts in Bangladesh and the rest of the world are analyzed and compared with the similar case studies as it is essential to know how media shape the public opinion and setting agenda and manufacture consent. Nanyang Technological University Library The rural press in Bangladesh hay the tradicion and historical background of one hundred years. The area that now comprises Bangladesh was once the rural hinterland of the capital of undivided Bengal. Even present capital Dhaka was then rural town. A number of weekly and fortnightly newspapers were published from Dhaka and other towns. In the struggle for independence the rural press w as the only media through which political aspirations of the people were reflected. Hence weekly newspapers, mostly as tabloid sheets of two pages were published from the district towns. Notable p olitical leaders were the editors and publishers of these news sheets. But these publications were short-lived. The editor of the publisher were often jailed or the publication would be banned. -

Vol. II. 37-47 (2008) Hundred and Fifty years of the Revolt of 1857: A Historiographical Construction Ratna Roy Sanyal Professor Department of History North Bengal University In the 150th years of the revolt of 1857, a good number of seminars have been organized at different parts of the country to commemorate the great event through the lens ofhundr ed and fifty years. Voluminous literature, articles, monographs have been published on the various aspects ofthe Revolt. A project has been taken by the Indian Council ofHistorical Research to prepare an exhaustive bibliography ofthe works on the Revolt of 1857. In the year 2006, the number of collections had exceeded eight hundred. No doubt, the Great Revolt of 1857 is 1 a much discussed event in our history • Even after 150 years, scholars are not unanimous with regard to the nature of the Revolt. There is scarcity of singularity in the interpretation and characterization of the uprising. This is partly because of the hypothetical proverb that "All history is contemporary history" and partly for the information mostly documented in the official records and also for the historian's analysis ofthe matter from their own paradigmatic outlook. After Independence, archival documents, letters, especially Rebel's Proclamations, newspaper accounts have been published and are now accessible to scholars. Taken all the projections (as far as possible) on the subject, the present discourse will try to make a historiographical construction ofthe Great Revolt ofl 857 in hundred and fifty years perspective.
