In keeping with the spirit of the Christmas season, each group reflected on what they should be thankful for at County, putting their gratitude onto stars that the Council put onto the tree.

We thank Mrs Middleditch and the School Council members for the initiative and for making us remember how much we have to be grateful for. Well done, Holly! Work Experience 2019 Local employers all stress the importance of students undertaking work experience and, nationally, it is being promoted strongly that all schools should give every student a fortnight in the world of work. This gives students the chance to demonstrate the important qualities of punctuality, reliability, willingness to try new activities, interaction with new people and confidence in unfamiliar situations. At County, we have always ensured that every member of year eleven spends two weeks on work experience and this year’s fortnight went extremely well. Almost without exception, the reports from employers and the feedback to those staff who visited the placements were outstanding. As a result, a huge number of year eleven students gained ‘highly commended’ certificates and it was very difficult to select this year’s prizewinners. In a special assembly this month, we awarded the prizes to: J Molly Hughes Harley Turner O Bobbie-Rae Durant Jordon Denny K Damien Page Bethan Abberley P Aimee Francis Jack Varney L Lily Cummings William Holton R Wahida Hasan Jack Nichols M Charlotte Rice William Chapman S Daisy Alfred-Allen Oliver Moss N Amy Scopes Rhys Smith T Lily-Beau Burgess Toby Brown

The overall work experience prize was awarded to James Merrett and the Runners-Up were Tom Setchell and Kieran Rolph

We continue to be extremely grateful to all the local businesses, schools and public sector employers who gave our students placements. We also particularly thank Mrs Jolly and Mrs Whitehead who organised work experience 2019 supported by Mrs Thomas, the year eleven team and all the staff who made the visits. A very musical Christmas We are very fortunate to still enjoy a wide variety of extra-curricular music and we produced two very contrasting examples this month. Our sacred carol service complemented the more light-hearted concert in celebration of the season. As the term ends we thank Miss Green, Mr Jermy, Mr Moore, our peripatetic team and our sixth form Captains of Music.

The Carol Service Our traditional service of lessons and carols in St Mary’s Church is always one of the highlights of our musical year and, for many of the congregation, the start of Christmas. Our full choir, chamber choir, girls’ choir, barbershop singers, sixth form choir and staff choir provided sacred pieces from across the centuries. They were accompanied by our brass ensemble for the congregational carols. We especially congratulate: Rebecca Young who sang the solo in ‘Once in Royal David’s City’.

We also congratulate the student readers:

Year 9: Anika Cox Year 10: Matthew Waller Year 11: Jacob White Head Student Team: Hannah Pamplin and Luca Beadle

We thank the Reverend Simon Harvey for conducting the service and, County Upper parent, James Thomas for playing the organ. The Christmas Concert Our concert provided a contrast to our Carol Service and enabled a further ten of our ensembles to perform includ- ing the Orchestra, Wind Band, and Swing Band. The audience enjoyed seasonal pieces from Tchaikovsky to highlights from ‘Frozen’. The Gala Pantomime Performance Once again we were pleased to provide the live music at this annual special performance at The Theatre Royal. Ben Foreman and Joey Turner were extremely well received and we were delighted to receive this from the theatre’s Development Manager, Emma Suckling:

“I wanted to write and thank you hugely for everything you did to make Sunday’s gala here at the theatre such a huge success. Your playing was sublime and really added enormously to the atmosphere of the Greene Room, to offer such talented musicianship is a real bonus for us, so thank you.

Thank you both for giving up your time, everyone here is very grateful.”

By giving to others, we have helped many lives, especially young lives, so much more in need of support than we can imagine. We have also demonstrated the true message of Christmas whilst also having fun. We congratulate our sixth form students who have done an excellent job of leading the school in a wide range of events incorporating new activities and old favourites. Above all, that very special spirit for which we are renowned has been evident throughout Charity 2019 and has confirmed the unique atmosphere which underpins all our success. We thank everyone and particularly acknowledge: • The entire staff, who have given their whole-hearted support at this busy time. • The non-teaching staff for all their cake sales. • Our music department for the retiring collections at our Christmas Concert and Carol Service; • Miss Holton for organising the visit to Jump Street for students from years nine through to year thirteen; and the staff triathlon ‘1000 mile challenge’; • Mr Staples for producing a calendar from which all the profit was donated (£671); • Mr McClean for all the technical support; • Mr Fisher, Mrs Stevens and Miss Lacey for guiding the sixth form through Charity 2019; • The revue team Megan Clutterham, Katie Drayton, Ben Foreman, Freddie Green, Nancy Griffith, Betty Hoggar, Tilly Leighton, Nicky Lucchi, Suzie Reid and Joey Turner.
