Bhairo, Malhar, Sorath, Bilawal, Bilawal Mangal, Bilawal Dakhni, Sarang, Vadhans Dakhani, Aasa, Dhanasri, Maajh, Gaurhi Cheti, Kedara, Jaijaawanti, Soohi, Todi 3. Ability to perform any one of the following with proper Gayaki : a. Gazal, Thumri, Tappa 4. Ability to recognize ragas asked by the examiner 5.     Raga of the month July 2020 Raga Sorath Raga Sorath has become a rare melody today. It is believed that Raga Sorath has its roots in Folk songs of Sourashtra which is part of Kathiawar region of the state of Gujarat. Close companion of Raga Sorath, Des, being a dhun-raga is more popular. Both the Ragas share the same scale, but Gandhar is very weak, practically omitted, in Sorath and is only subtly used in meend from Madhyam to Rishabh in Avaroha. Inclusion of Gandhar in Des and its chanchal prakriti makes it suitable for light forms of music such as, thumri, dadra, hori, ghazal etc. Ragas of Khamaj Thata are classified in 2 types- Rishabh prominent; that is, Sorathanga and Gandhar prominent- Khamajanga. Raga Des belongs to Sorathanga. The Raga is classified in Khamaj Thata (Harikambhoji Melakarta no. 28). Ragas Surati and Andolika from Carnatic music are similar to Raga Sorath. This is written in simple Punjabi language with mixture of Hindi words which were in circulation at that time among spiritual seekers. This is called "sant bhasha" or the lingua franca of the saints of Northern India. It has words from Punjabi, Sindhi in the West to Bengali in the East. Since the saints moved freely from place to place, they had developed a language of their own called "sant bhasha". The time of composition is 1601-1602 AD at Sri Amritsar where Gurdwara Ram Sar is located. This composition is divided into 24 "Ashtpadis" or groups of eight stanzas. Each stanza is having 10 lines. Before each ashtpadi, there is a "sloka" which gives the gist of the next eight stanzas. In the first ashtpadi, after the first stanza, Guru Arjan Dev has given two lines with "Rahau" mark at their end. This word 'rahau' means "pause here and think" i.e.

While writing this book on Ego, I experienced great difficulty in proceeding further because of the scanty material available on the subject.     Chapter 5 Damaging Punjabi: 1947 and After Master Tara Singh and Pundit Nehru As far as I have studied, observed, and experienced, it is apparently very difficult to be hopeful about the future of the Punjabi language. It is good as well as not good news that the patient will not die soon, but the question is where ultimately a long and protracted illness leads to? History has disoriented all Punjabis – Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims. Muslim Punjabis have yet to discover the heritage of their language. Sikhs since 1947 are in a perpetual quarrel with Delhi and Hindus. And this is not without a background. And Hindu Punjabis, to what extent I am not sure, very unfortunately, have disowned their mother-tongue. And this had happened under the nose of Pundit Nehru. If not before Partition, had he understood the implications and had the capabilities, he would have cornered the Punjabi Hindus on abandoning Punjabi language and forced them back to their ‘homes’. How an enlightened leader can let his people disown their heritage due to some transitory and superficial issues? This was a Himalayan blunder of Punjabi Hindus and they belonged to Congress party! On the other hand, it is impossible to find any wisdom on the part of Sikhs to embark on such political agitation immediately after Partition what ultimately materialized into the Punjabi Suba demand. Before we take up Punjab, let us go to South India and see Pundit Nehru’s working there with an eye on the historical process. It will help us in Punjab. Pundit Nehru and Andhra State Earlier in 1920, the members of the Indian National Congress had agreed on the linguistic reorganization of the Indian states as one of the party's political goals.
