Biostratigraphical limits are sited in accordance with PAVIA (1973, 1983). The relationships of nannofossil biohorizons to ammonoid biozones are those of ERBA (1990), who has studied three sections in the Digne area. Note that large Watznaueria contracta and small W. manivitiae sensu MATTIOLI & ERBA (1999) correspond respectively to Watznaueria sp. 4 and Watznaueria sp. 5 of ERBA (1990). The lower part of the section is made up of an alternation of limestones and shaly marls dated as the Humphresianum ammo- nite Zone. After a clear break in the topographic profile (Fig. 1.3), the marl-limestone alternations become richer in clays, especially in the upper part of the section. This interval corresponds to the Niortense (42 m) and Garantiana ammonite zones, and to the Tetragona Subzone (43 m), where a slump of 8 metres is clearly visible (Fig. 1.4). The upper part of the section (Par- kinsoni ammonite Zone) is char- acterized by thin calcareous beds in alternation with thick marls. In time terms this interval corres- ponds roughly to the base of the "Terres Noires" Formation. A hiatus followed by a flooding surface (Ferry, 1990) separates the Bajocian from the Bathonian stage. The basal Bathonian is represented by the Zigzag ammonite Zone (Convergens Subzone) in a "Terres Noires" facies. 5 Carnets de Géologie / Notebooks on Geology - Book 2008/01 (CG2008_BOOK_01) S Figure 1.5. The cephalopod fauna from the marly limestones to marls here indicates Late Valanginian to Early Aptian age. The deposition of the marly limestones and marls of this interval occurred during depositional- ly unstable conditions. The underlying Biancone Formation (Maiolica Formation) is of Early Valanginian, whereas the lowermost Rosso Ammonitico is of Jurassic to Berriasian age. The ammonoid fauna consists of 27 different genera, each represented by 1-2 species. The assemblage at the Puez section is dominated by the Phylloceratina (30%) and the Ammonitina (34%). Phyllopachyceras (17%) and Phylloceras (13%) (both Phylloceratina) are the most frequent components, followed by Lytoceras (12%) (Lytoceratina), and Barremites (10%) and Melchiorites (8%) (both Ammonitina). The cephalopod fauna is purely of Mediterranean origin.

Xh ieuican%Mllisdllm 1Soxftates PUBLISHED BY THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY CENTRAL PARK WEST AT 79TH STREET, NEW YORK 24, N.Y. NUMBER 2005 JUNE 15, 1960 Lower Cretaceous Ammonites from Colombia, South America BY OTTO HAAS INTRODUCTION The present paper attempts to summarize the paleontological re- sults of an investigation carried out early in 1956, under the sponsor- ship of International Petroleum (Colombia), Ltd., in the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia for the purpose of clarifying and refining the lower Cretaceous stratigraphy of that region. I am indebted to the company for permission to publish this paper and to utilize photo- graphs made at the company's expense, and to Prof. Gerardo Botero Arango of the Facultad Nacional de Minas of Medellin, Colombia, for permission to describe specimens collected on a field trip of that institution and now deposited in its collections. For the repositories of illustrated specimens, reference is made to the legends of the figures accompanying the present report; there "I.P." indicates the collec- tions of International Petroleum (Colombia), Ltd., in Bogota and "F.N.M." those of the Facultad Nacional de Minas in Medellin. In addition to most of the forms recognized among the abundant ammonites collected in the course of the above investigation, some interesting specimens that had been in the company's collections earlier are also included in the present report. Unfortunately most of the ammonites here described, especially those preserved in shales, are crushed and flattened or otherwise dis- torted; venters can be examined only exceptionally and even more rarely can suture lines be observed.

TAXONOMY, STRATIGRAPHY, AND PALEOCEANOGRAPHIC IMPLICATIONS OF PALEOCENE DIATOMS1 Juliane M. Fenner2 ABSTRACT The taxonomy and stratigraphy of pelagic Paleocene diatoms from ODP Sites 698, 700, and 702 and DSDP Site 524 in the South Atlantic and DSDP Site 214 in the Indian Ocean are presented, as well as paleogeographic and paleoecologic implications. Eleven new species and one new variety are described and one new combination is proposed: Coscinodiscus cruxii sp. nov. Grunowiella palaeocaenica var. alternans var. nov. Hemiaulusl beatus sp. nov. Hemiaulusl ciesielskii sp. nov. Hemiaulusl conicus sp. nov. Hemiaulus kristoffersenii sp. nov. Hemiaulus nocchiae sp. nov. Hemiaulusl oonkii sp. nov. Hemiaulusl velatus sp. nov. Triceratium gombosii sp. nov. Trochosira gracillima comb. nov. Trochosira marginata sp. nov. Trochosira radiata sp. nov. Hole 700B provides one of the most continuous diatomaceous Paleocene profiles known. Stratigraphic ranges of diatom species from this and other Southern Hemisphere sites are calibrated against calcareous microfossil zones. The first-appearance datums of Triceratium gombosii, Hemiaulus incurvus, and Triceratium mirabile in Paleocene deep-sea sediments are useful for regional stratigraphic correlations. Quantitative analysis of the biosiliceous microfossil groups (diatoms, silicoflagellates, radiolarians, and archae- omonadaceae) shows that preservation of diatoms is confined primarily to the upper Paleocene (planktonic foraminifer Zones P3 and P4 and calcareous nannofossil Zones upper NP5 to lower NP9). In the lower Paleocene only short intervals in Hole 700B are diatomaceous. A correlation between the degree of silica diagenesis and the calcium carbonate content of the sediment is not obvious.

The Working Group proposes only one modification to its current zonation of the Mediterranean Region, the addition of a cristatum Subzone in the lower part of the inflatum Zone (upper Albian). But in the light of newly published research it highlights levels/areas where further work is required, especially to resolve conflicting zonal schemes. It also proposes a 'Tethyan Province' zonation for the middle Albian. Alternative correlations for the Boreal/Tethyan Valanginian to Barremian stages are tabulated, one based on ammonite evidence alone, the other with additional biostratigraphical data coupled with sequence stratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy. Contents Introduction .3 Zonation of the Mediterranean Region .4 Tethy an/Boreal correlation ,.7 Aptian/Albian correlations ,8 References 12 Introduction The Lower Cretaceous Cephalopod Team originated as a group of specialists col laborating to establish an ammonite zonation for the Mediterranean Region of Tethys on behalf of IGCP Project 262 (Tethyan Correlation).
