We publish twice a year online (once at the end of each term) and compile both online issues into a single end-of-year print edition. The journal began as the idea of a group of writers, artists, and musicians from a second year English honours class and has published 18 issues since September 2011. As film critic after film critic stumbled over Screenwriter’s Monthly can be found themselves to call his performance everything from "original" to at the following fine locations: "eccentric," they forgot one thing: the screenwriters, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who did one heck of a job creating Sparrow on paper first. Sure, some critics mentioned the writers when they declared the film "cliché" and attacked it. Since the previous Walt Disney Los Angeles film based on one of its theme park attractions was the unbear- able The Country Bears, Pirates of the Caribbean is surprisingly Above The Fold 370 N. Fairfax Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90036 entertaining. But let’s face it. This wasn't intended to be serious (323) 935-8525 filmmaking. Not much is anymore in Hollywood. Notes Introduction 1. The English translation is that provided in the subtitles to the UK Region 2 DVD release of the film. 2. The rewarding of Christoph Waltz for his polyglot performance as Hans Landa at the 2010 Academy Awards recalls other Oscar- winning multilin- gual performances such as those by Robert de Niro in The Godfather Part II (Coppola, 1974) and Meryl Streep in Sophie’s Choice (Pakula, 1982). 3. T h is u nder st a nd i ng of f i l m go es bac k to t he era of si lent f i l m, to D.W. Gr i f f it h’s famous affirmation of film as the universal language. For a useful account of the semiotic understanding of film as language, see Monaco (2000: 152–227). 4. I speak here of film and not of television for the sake of convenience only. This is not to undervalue the relevance of these questions to television, and indeed vice versa. The large volume of studies in existence on the audiovisual translation of television texts attests to the applicability of these issues to television too. From a mimetic standpoint, television addresses many of the same issues of language representation. Although the bulk of the exempli- fication in this study will be drawn from the cinema, reference will also be made where applicable to television usage. 1 Mimesis and Film Languages 1. There are, of course, examples of ‘intralingual’ translation where films are post-synchronised with more easily comprehensible accents (e.g. Mad Max for the American market). -

Workplace FACT SHEET Death and Mourning Rituals This document lays out basic information about the death, funeral rites, and post-death practices of eight major religious traditions, drawing from Tanenbaum’s online resource, Religion at Work. Addi- tionally, this resource has been updated to include anticipated adjustments due to social distancing on death and mourning rituals and their impact on the workplace. This is by no means an exhaus- tive resource, but is intended to offer an introductory overview to this information. Please keep in mind that there is great diversity within and among religious communities, so colleagues may prac- tice and believe in ways that are not covered in this resource. MOURNING & COVID-19 Adjusted Rules: Burials and Cremations Around the world adjustments are being made to centuries old traditions around burial and crematoria practices, across religions. Depending on the country, burials and cremations are required to be conducted within 12 hours of a loved ones’ passing or delayed to a much later date. Some countries are specifying the location of the burial or requiring that remains be picked up only at scheduled times. Practices such as loved ones cleaning the recently deceased body, sharing a shovel to put dirt on the de- ceased’s coffin, and funeral pyres are no longer doable as they used to be. Furthermore, burial or crema- tion options may be even more limited for those already facing economic hardships to then have to man- age and take on an unexpected death and associated costs. Time Off: Delayed Mourning Rituals For many, traditional group gatherings, whether in a home, house of worship, or within the town, are strongly discouraged, both for funerals and mourning practices. -

Some stories are bizarre. The title piece, “Beasts of Flight,” explores systemic hatred and fear through the eyes of a talking parrot.
