The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications by Helen Patterson A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Helen Patterson 2013 The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications Helen Patterson Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines the hymns of the Antiphonary of Bangor (AB) (Antiphonarium Benchorense, Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana C. 5 inf.) and considers its musical implications in medieval Ireland. Neither an antiphonary in the true sense, with chants and verses for the Office, nor a book with the complete texts for the liturgy, the AB is a unique Irish manuscript. Dated from the late seventh-century, the AB is a collection of Latin hymns, prayers and texts attributed to the monastic community of Bangor in Northern Ireland. Given the scarcity of information pertaining to music in early Ireland, the AB is invaluable for its literary insights. Studied by liturgical, medieval, and Celtic scholars, and acknowledged as one of the few surviving sources of the Irish church, the manuscript reflects the influence of the wider Christian world. The hymns in particular show that this form of poetical expression was significant in early Christian Ireland and have made a contribution to the corpus of Latin literature. Prompted by an earlier hypothesis that the AB was a type of choirbook, the chapters move from these texts to consider the monastery of Bangor and the cultural context from which the manuscript emerges. As the Irish peregrini are known to have had an impact on the continent, and the AB was recovered in ii Bobbio, Italy, it is important to recognize the hymns not only in terms of monastic development, but what they reveal about music. -
Lip-Blown Instruments of Ireland Before the Norman Invasion
DOWNEY 75 LIP-BLOWN INSTRUMENTS OF IRELAND BEFORE THE NORMAN INVASION Peter Downey t is generally assumed that metal lip-blown instruments were introduced into Europe by the Arabs and Moors during the Middle Ages as the result of the Crusades and other Ibelligerent contacts. This assumption requires subscribing to the belief that, with the fall of the Roman Empire, all knowledge of the manufacture and use of lip-blown instruments, such as the Roman tuba and comu or the Gallic carnyx, was lost in the turmoil and destruction of the Dark Ages. Serious doubts have been cast on the concept recently, most notably by Don Smithers.1 The arguments have been presented in a quite persuasive manner. However, what has been missing to date is "test-case" evidence from a part of Europe in which there can be shown a continuity of manufacture and use of lip-blown instruments throughout the period under scrutiny, and whose history shows that: 1) they remained outside the Roman Empire; 2) they were cushioned from the events of the Dark Ages that followed the fall of that empire in the west; 3) they did not participate in the early confrontations between Christian and Muslim. One such example is actually to be found on the fringe of Western Europe, namely, Ireland. Aspects of Ireland's testimony have been mentioned briefly in various texts, but much misunderstanding and misrepresentation has accompanied and clouded the clarity of that evidence. What follows is the first stage of an attempt to dispel some of those clouds by bringing into clearer focus the material riches preserved in Ireland from its long-lasting cultural independence.2 Because many readers may be unfamiliar with Ireland's prehistory and early history, short overviews of the historical situation are also included as appropriate to provide a contact for the instruments described. -

Henry Tudor had marched with his force from Milford Haven in Wales where he had landed with about 2000 men. The Battle of Bosworth is one of England’s defining battles as it ended the reign of Richard III and led to Henry Tudor becoming Henry VII, the first of the Tudor monarchs, a dynasty that lasted to 1603 and included the reign of two of England’s most famous monarchs – Henry VIII and his daughter Elizabeth I. To launch his campaign against Richard III, Henry needed money. This he got from Charles VIII of France who hoped that a conflict in England would suitably distract any attention away from his wish to take Brittany. Henry sailed from Harfleur on August 1st with a force of between 400 and 500 loyal followers and about 1500 French soldiers. The force landed at Milford Haven on August 7th and marched north along the Cardigan coastline before turning inland towards the Cambrian Mountains and then the River Severn which he followed to the English border. -

Abstract The trumpet from the 5th century BC in ancient Greece, the salpinx, has been largely ignored in modern scholarship. My thesis begins with the origins and physical characteristics of the Greek trumpet, comparing trumpets from other ancient cultures. I then analyse the sounds made by the trumpet, and the emotions caused by these sounds, noting the growing sophistication of the language used by Greek authors. In particular, I highlight its distinctively Greek association with the human voice. I discuss the range of signals and instructions given by the trumpet on the battlefield, demonstrating a developing technical vocabulary in Greek historiography. In my final chapter, I examine the role of the trumpet in peacetime, playing its part in athletic competitions, sacrifice, ceremonies, entertainment and ritual. Characterization and' Taxonomy of Historic Brass Musical Instruments from ae Acoustical Standpoint Arnold Myers Ph.D. The University of Edinburgh 1998 I" V *\- Abstract The conceptual bases of existing classification schemes for brasswind are examined. The requirements of a taxonomy relating to the character of brass musical instruments as experienced by players and listeners are discussed. Various directly and indirectly measurable physical parameters are defined. The utility of these parameters in classification is assessed in a number of case studies on instruments in museums and collections. The evolution of instrument design since 1750 in terms of these characterization criteria is outlined. Memory in Early Modern England
Part II Special Subject C Memory in Early Modern England Prof. Alex Walsham ([email protected]) Overview Without memory, we could not write History. But memory itself has a history. This Special Subject investigates one segment of that history in the context of sixteenth- and seventeenth- century England. By contrast with medievalists and modernists, early modernists have been slow to investigate how the arts of remembering and forgetting were implicated in and affected by the profound religious, political, intellectual, cultural, and social upheavals of the period. However, there is now a growing surge of exciting and stimulating research on this topic. Its relevance and centrality to key historiographical debates and its capacity to shed fresh light on classic questions regarding one of the most tumultuous eras in English history are increasingly being recognised. Set against the backdrop of the profound ruptures of the Reformation, Civil Wars, and the constitutional revolution of 1688, this Paper seeks to explore how individuals and communities understood and practised memory alongside the ways in which it was exploited and harnessed, divided and fractured, by the unsettling developments through which contemporaries lived and in which they actively participated. It assesses the role played by amnesia and oblivion, nostalgia and commemoration, in facilitating change and in negotiating the legacies it left. Students will be exposed to a wide range of primary sources – from chronicles, diaries, histories, memoirs and compilations of folklore to legal depositions, pictures, maps, buildings, funeral monuments and material objects – that afford insight into the culture and transmutations of early modern memory. Sessions in the Michaelmas Term will explore contemporary perceptions and practices of memory.
