METHODIST PIONEERS IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC By Rev. Dr F. Baker The first chaplain appointed to New South Wales in 1786 was a Methodist in the secondary sense of being a devout evangelical clergyman, and was deliberately sponsored as such by William Wilberforce, friend and admirer of the Wesleys. The second who arrived under Wilberforce's auspices, Samuel Marsden (1765-1838),1 was similar in spirituality, but much tougher both in spirit and in body. His Methodism was even nearer to that of Wesley, for he had been born into a Yorkshire Wesleyan family. and apparently became one of their lay preachers.2 He was educated for the Anglican ministry at the expense of the Elland Clerical Society, an evangelical group founded in 1767 by Wesley's friend the Rev. Henry Venn, vicar of Huddersfield.3 By them he was sent to Hull Grammar School (aged 23!) and then on to Magdalene College. Cambridge, where he was befriended by Rev. Charles Simeon, after whom he named one of his children.4 The dire straits of the Chaplain in New South Wales, however, undoubtedly stressed by Governor Phillip in person as well as by Johnson himself in letters, made Wilberforce and his friends extremely anxious to secure another evangelical candidate as quickly as possible. Therefore they exerted pressure on Marsden, even to the extent of persuading him to leave Cambridge without graduating. His agreement was a measure of his Christian dedication, and also proof that they had indeed chosen the right man, eminently qualified by spiritual gifts, by robust strength, and by practical training. -

I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. -

This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture. -

Paoe•• DUCOI FIFTY YEARS OF STUDIES IN 1'\ ETHOD1ST HISTORY The Wesley Historical Society was established in 1893 and therefore celebrates its Jubilee this year. The early issues of the Proceedings were full of useful articles and studies for students of Methodist history. New letters of Wesley were constantly being found and corrections in the existing editions of Wesley's Journals and Letters were constantly being made. Indeed it can be safely said that we should never have had such admirable Standard Editions of both Letters and Journal but for the work of the Society. It was in the Proceedings that the suggestion was first made for the publication of these standard editions. These fifty years have seen notable achievements in the field of Methodist history. The most important of these have been the publication of the Standard Editions of Wesley's Journal (8 vols.) and Wesley's Letters. (8 vols.) and what has come to be regarded as the standard Life of John Wesley, that by Dr. J. S. Simon, in 5 vols. There is no man in English history of whose life the details are 80 fully known not only from year to year but for a great part of it from hour to hour as John Wesley; The Rev. W. B. Brash in the Didsbury College Centenary volume says "Apart from Birk beck Hill's editing of Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson, it is the most carefully and fully edited book known to us in the field of English Literature." The Editor, Rev. Nehemiah Curnock, like so many other specialists in this period, was a Didsbury man. -
Language Reform in the Late Seventeenth Century
chapter 3 Language Reform in the Late Seventeenth Century Ryan J. Stark In the opening chapter [Rhetoric, Science, and Magic in Seventeenth-Century England], I focused upon the rise of the new plain style, emphasizing how modern experimentalists rejected both the tropes of magic and mystery and, in the opposite direction, the discourses of materialism and skepticism (e.g., sadducism, deism, and atheism). In this chapter, I concentrate on the culmina- tion of rhetorical reform in early modern England: the Royal Society’s plain language program. I show in particular how members of the organization and other like-minded writers used the new plain style in order to counteract bewitching idioms, which most intellectuals of the period saw as the primary linguistic cause of England’s religious and social strife. My overarching argu- ment is that a group of experimental philosophers—by creating a new under- standing of style, and of language in general—brought about a paradigm shift in the English rhetorical tradition. Of course, significant changes in the world require many different participants in many different capacities, and the seventeenth-century reformation in style is no exception. A small circle of scientific writers did not alter the linguistic cosmos by themselves. To appreciate how plainness emerged on a large scale requires at minimum a non-linear model of how ideas influence societies, not to mention an intuition about the workings of Zeitgeists. James Sutherland is a bit hyperbolic when he suggests that after 1660 English prose gets a fresh start.1 He would have been more accurate to say that English philosophy of rhetoric begins anew around 1665, give or take several years, building upon Francis Bacon’s key formulation of the split between words and things in The Advancement of Learning, and also drawing upon many other criticisms of enchanted rhetoric in the late Renaissance, including those offered by philosophers, orators, poets, and, most notably, preachers and theologians. -

Puritans and the Royal Society THE official programme of the recent tercentenary celebrations of the founding of the Royal Society included a single religious service. This was held at 10.30 a.m. at St Paul's Cathedral when the Dean, the Very Rev. W. R. Matthews, D.D., D.LITT., preached a sermon related to the building's architect, Sir Christopher Wren. Otherwise there seems to be little reference to the religious background of the Society's pioneers and a noticeable omission of appreciation of the considerable Puritan participation in its institution. The events connected with the Royal Society's foundation range over the period 1645 to 1663, but there were also earlier influences. One of these was Sir Francis Bacon, Lord Verulam, 1561-1626. Douglas McKie, Professor of the History and Philosophy of Science, University College, London, in The Times Special Number, 19 July 1960, states that Bacon's suggested academy called Solomon's House described in New Atlantis (1627) was too often assumed to be influential in the founding of the Royal Society, much in the same way as Bacon's method of induction, expounded in his Novum Organum of 1620, has been erroneously regarded as a factor in the rise of modern science. But this may be disputed, for Bacon enjoyed considerable prestige as a learned man and his works were widely read. -

Some Ancient Suffolk Parochial Libraries J. A. Fitch
SOME ANCIENT SUFFOLK PAROCHIAL LIBRARIES By THE REVD. J. A. FITCH, M.A. The purpose of this article is to give an account of such ancient 'parochial' libraries as have survived in this county, together with those which have been lost, dispersed, sold or destroyed. An attempt will also be made to indicate the steps which have been, are being, and will be, or ought to be taken in order to ensure the preservation of the surviving libraries for posterity. The method in the first part will be chronological, taking the libraries in the order of their foundation, so far as this is known, and I shall en- deavour to relate the Suffolk story to developments in the country as a whole, apart from which it is scarcely intelligible. There has, in the last few years' both nationally and locally, been a revival of interest in these old libraries, of which Suffolk has, or had, a good representative share. This interest was stimulated a few years ago by the notoriety attending the sale and dispersal by their local trustees of certain valuable libraries (notably that of Shipdham, Norfolk) and the wholesale and wanton destruction and loss of others. This resulted in the appointment in 1949 of a Com- mittee of the Central Council for the Care of Churches to enquire into the matter, make a survey of existing libraries and a record of those lost, sold or destroyed, and finally, to make recommendations for their better conservation in future. So much valuable informa- tion came to light in the course of this enquiry, that it was decided to publish a detailed Report under the direction of Mr.
