INTRODUCTION Opening statements in the October 2018 federal trial regarding corruption in men’s college basketball served as a juicy appetizer for what was to come in the rest of the trial. Now former Adidas executive James Gatto, former Adidas consultant Merl Code, and aspiring agent and former runner for NBA agent Andy Miller, Christian Dawkins, faced accusations that they paid money from Adidas to prospective student-athletes and their families to ensure the prospective student-athletes signed with Adidas-sponsored schools, and then with Adidas and certain financial planners and agents once they turned professional.1 In her opening statement, Casey Donnelly, Gatto’s attorney, admitted that Gatto funneled $100,000 to the family of highly recruited prospect Brian Bowen; paid $40,000 to the family of current Dallas Maverick Dennis Smith, Jr.

An In-Depth Look at the Past, Present, and Future Abstract The NCAA began in the early 1900s as a way to regulate the wild west that was intercollegiate athletics. Over time, the organization has grown from its 62 member beginnings to three divisions with 1,281 members. In 2017, for the first time in its history, the NCAA brought in over one billion dollars in total revenue (Kirshner 2018). The NCAA has been able to achieve this feat by its insistence on the "amateurism" of its participants. This business model has allowed the organization to keep the financial benefits associated with the playing of high-level sports on college campuses. Participants in these events deemed "Student-Athletes," are barred from receiving payment for their athletic skills without being faced with the potential of losing their ability to compete at the NCAA level.

  • Using the G League As the Nba's Key Tointernational Expansion
A MUCH NEEDED TRAVEL CALL: USING THE G LEAGUE AS THE NBA’S KEY TO INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION Allison Slusher* INTRODUCTION Larry Bird once said, “Once you are labeled the best you want to stay up there, and you can’t do it by loafing around. If I don’t keep changing, I’m history.”1 Although Larry Bird’s words were directed toward himself and his career as a forward in the National Basketball Association, his words ring true for the NBA as a whole. The NBA is arguably the most profitable and popular professional basketball league in the world, but as the NBA’s success and popularity continue to rise, if it doesn’t keep progressing, it’s future as one of the best leagues in the world is not secure.2 The time is ripe for the NBA to make changes. The NCAA cannot provide a place for all its athletes who want to make money now; therefore, the NBA should take advantage of the NCAA’s rules as they are. The NBA itself, in order to avoid stagnation, needs to expand and grow. The key to expansion and becoming the hero to both players and fans in an arguably tragic tale of collegiate athletics lies in an existing component of the NBA: minor league basketball. The NBA is known primarily for its 30 professional teams; however, the organization also operates the G League, the NBA’s official minor league.3 The G League is designed to give players, * You should write an about the author section here.
