Approve Meeting Minutes • Barbara Westercamp made a motion to approve the minutes from September 18, 2014. Tim Oberbroeckling seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Todd McNall arrived at 4:34 p.m. 2. Action Items a. DEMOLITION Applications i. 2816 Fruitland Boulevard SW – Private Property • Jeff Hintz stated the property was built in 1925 and is not eligible for the National Register. The property is out of character with the adjacent properties and is in poor condition. The owner would like to build a new house on the property. Pat Cargin arrived at 4:36 p.m. 1 • Tim Oberbroeckling made a motion to approve demolition of 2816 Fruitland Boulevard SW. Todd McNall seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. ii. 1533 Ellis Boulevard NW – Private Property • Mr. Hintz stated the property was built in 1900 and was flooded in 2008. The property was not gutted after the flood and is not eligible for the National Register. • Todd McNall made a motion to approve the demolition of 1533 Ellis Boulevard NW. Tim Oberbroeckling seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. 3. New Business a) 2015 Work Plan • Anne Russett identified the current goals and tasks of the HPC work plan and also identified new tasks to be incorporated into the 2015 Work Plan. • Barbara Westercamp made a motion to approve the 2015 HPC Work Plan. Tim Oberbroeckling seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. b) 2015 Preservation Showcase i. Develop sub-committee • Ms. McKnight-Grafton stated the showcase will be held in May. The location hasn’t been determined but the Vets Memorial Building has been offered as a location. • Discussion included logos, budget, outreach options, etc. Members of the commission volunteered to serve on various sub-committees. c) Industrial Building Nomination • Ms. Russett stated the Industrial Building nomination is part of a MOA. The Smulekoff’s warehouse building has been identified and the owner is interested. The 2nd choice for nomination is the City’s Water Building. d) LOA Update • Ms. Russett stated in order to mitigate the impact of 82 historic property demolitions and LOA was identified to nominate 12 properties to the National Register. Due to 14 of the 82 properties opting out of the buyout program, the LOA will be removed. 4. Old Business a) Local Landmarks • Mr. Hintz stated two nominations were sent to SHPO and comments should be received in October. The nominations will then go to City Planning Commission and City Council for recommendation. b) Demolition Applications UNDER REVIEW i. 1257 3rd Avenue SE – Private Property – November 17, 2014 • Mark Stoffer Hunter stated he is still completely intensive research on the property. Bob Grafton stated a consultant is looking into funding for relocation of the property. 5. Adjournment • Barbara Westercamp made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 5:54 p.m. Todd McNall seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Front yard fence would be picket in nature and the fence would have gates which would NOT be attached to the house. The finished side of the fence would face out; materials proposed include pressure treated wood, which would not be painted. Information from Historic Surveys on property: The 1995 Site Inventory Form from the District Nomination survey lists the property as “good” and “moderately well preserved” for integrity. This thesis examines the broad range of influences that thermal qualities have on architectural space and peoples' response to it. It begins with the observation that proper thermal conditions are necessary for all life forms, and examines the various strategies used by plants and animals to survive in spite of adverse thermal conditions. Human beings have available to them the widest range of thermal strategies. These include the skillful use of building technologies to create favorable microclimates, and the use of ar- tificial power to maintain a comfortable thermal environment. Survival strategies and the provision of thermal comfort are only the most basic levels of our relationship to the thermal en- vironment. Our experience of the world is through our senses, in- cluding the thermal sense. Many examples demonstrate the relation- ship of the thermal sense to the other senses. The more sensory input we experience, and the more varied the contrasts, the richer is the experience and its associated feelings of delight.

Its central figure is the theologian and print entrepreneur Mehmed Džemaludin Čaušević (1870-1938), who returned to his Austro-Hungarian-occupied home province from extended studies in the Ottoman lands at the start of this period with an ambitious agenda of communal reform. Čaušević’s project centered on tying his native land and its Muslim inhabitants to the wider “Islamic World”—a novel geo-cultural construct he portrayed as a viable model for communal modernization. Over the subsequent decade, he and his followers founded a printing press, standardized the writing of Bosnian in a modified Arabic script, organized the country’s Ulema, and linked these initiatives together in a string of successful Arabic-script, Ulema-led, and theologically modernist print publications. By 1914, Čaušević’s supporters even brought him to a position of institutional power as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Reis-ul-Ulema (A: raʾīs al-ʿulamāʾ), the country’s highest Islamic religious authority and a figure of regional influence between two empires.

    Lustron Corporation steel houses Peter Lobner, 15 June 2020 The Lustron Corporation was formed in 1947 by Carl Strandlund, in collaboration with Chicago Vitreous Enamel Corporation, to mass- produce steel-constructed housing after World War II (WW II). The name “Lustron” refers to the factory-applied, lustrous, permanent porcelain enamel finish on all steel components. Lustron received an initial $15,500,000 loan from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) to mass-produce steel pre-fabricated houses in a former Curtiss-Wright aircraft factory in Columbus, OH, with more than 1,000,000 square feet of manufacturing floor space. After WW II, steel was a rationed material controlled by the Department of Commerce. There was only a limited allocation for “non-essential” use, such as manufacturing pre-fabricated homes, and Lustron received a large share of that allocation.     Portrait of Cedar Rapids One of the oldest mosques in America, and the first Muslim cemetery in the U.S., can be found in a surprising place: Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Cedar Rapids is one of the least ethnically diverse cities in the U.S.,1 and Iowa, a largely agricultural state, has more cows than people.2 Here, the “heartland” of America, is home to five generations of Muslim Americans. In the late 1800s, immigrants from Syria and Lebanon made their way across the U.S. Their main business was selling goods to the farmers as pacK-peddlers; they later established small stores, and many settled in Cedar Rapids. These early Syrian-Lebanese immigrants, both Christian and Muslim, slowly grew in number; once they began having families, they recognized the need for places of worship in Cedar Rapids. The earlyPost Muslim and Christian immigrant families were close-knit and supportive of each other: after the completion of St. George’s Orthodox Church, the Muslim community purchased a cross for the new building; shortly after, the two communities would celebrate the establishment of the mosque in 1934. Today, the “Mother Mosque of America” is on the National Register of Historic Places. The small, simple structure is an unassuming landmark, surrounded by a chain linK fence and tucKedOr into a modest neighborhood of Cedar Rapids. The green awning, dome, and crescent announce its presence as a mosque, yet the one-story building evokes a prairie schoolhouse. Over the years, the building went by many different names: in the early days, some referred to it as the nadi (“club” in Arabic),“The Rose of Fraternity Lodge,” and “The Moslem Temple”; later, it was Known as “The Islamic Center.”3 The community sold the building in the 1970s in order to build a new center; the original structure later fell into disrepair and was abandoned.
