Lo que nos propusimos analizar es ver hasta qué punto las distintas iniciativas de la ciencia ciudadana en nuestro país alcanzan a tener un reflejo en las publicaciones científicas “profesionales”, entendiendo por tales aquellas que están recogidas en el Web Of Science (WOS1) de Thomson-Reuters. La elaboración de mecanismos de evaluación de impacto más adecuados al mundo de la ciencia ciudadana es una necesidad reclamada insistentemente por la comunidad, pero mientras no se haya podido consensuar ninguno deberemos restringirnos a la evaluación de la ciencia ciudadana con las mismas herramientas que se emplean para el estudio de la Ciencia “profesional”.

Para ello, en colaboración con la empresa Kampal Data Solutions, se ha empleado un análisis del conjunto de publicaciones en los que el término “citizen science” ha quedado recogido en el título o resumen (abstract) de la publicación. A partir de ese conjunto se han identificado todos los autores, se han ubicado por nacionalidad y se ha creado una red compleja con los autores definiendo los nodos y las publicaciones representando las relaciones entre ellos. El software desarrollado por Kampal permite entonces el análisis de este sistema, el estudio de sus características más importantes, su evolución histórica, etc. Toda la información está disponible en la página web del proyecto, aunque vamos a resumir aquí las conclusiones más importantes:

Desde el punto de vista histórico el origen de la significativa revolución experimentada por la disciplina podemos situarlo en 2005, fecha en la que el número de publicaciones comenzó a crecer de manera imparable.

! En el caso de España, el proceso ha sido similar, pero se ha iniciado bastante más tarde (2008), y a una escala 40 veces inferior.

Observatorio de la ciencia ciudadana en España Estudio de publicaciones científicas 2 La temática de la mayor parte de las publicaciones se enmarca dentro del área de las ciencias ambientales, donde la toma de datos de flora, fauna, sus cambios estacionales, evolución de datos climáticos, etc, son un área donde los científicos no profesionales pueden participar de forma muy eficiente. El uso de la computación voluntaria ha sido otro importante foco de participación ciudadana, en este caso mucho menos activa, pero en el marco del cual se han producido contribuciones en un espectro mucho más amplio de campos: Ciencias del espacio (SETI@home, ZooUniverse), Bioquímica (Fold-It), etc.

El uso de estudios de ciencia ciudadana que tengan un reflejo en publicaciones científicas del WOK están dominadas por autores anglosajones, estadounidenses y británicos principalmente (como ejemplo, consideremos el mapa siguiente, donde se han coloreado los nodos (representan a los investigadores) en función del país de su institución de origen. Se aprecia claramente que el color verde claro -correspondiente con los EEEUU- y el gris plomo -Reino Unido- son los colores dominantes y casi los únicos donde se obtienen comunidades con publicaciones frecuentes (más de una línea de conexión). Históricamente este dominio está justificado en la larguísima tradición de sociedades científicas amateurs dedicadas a problemas medioambientales y geográficos, que se remontan en gran parte de los casos, a finales del siglo XIX.

El resto de países occidentales donde esta tradición no ha existido presenta muy pocos ejemplos de ciencia ciudadana con trascendencia científica de calidad, siendo el caso de España un ejemplo claro, como se puede ver en la siguiente gráfica.

Todas las publicaciones analizadas en colaboración con la empresa Kampal Data Solutions que contenían “citizen sccience” en el título o en el abstract. Cada nodo es un firmante, si existe enlace entre ellos es que han firmado algún paper conjuntamente.
