  • Gandhi As Mahatma: Gorakhpur District, Eastern UP, 1921-2'
Gandhi as Mahatma 289 of time to lead or influence a political movement of the peasantry. Gandhi, the person, was in this particular locality for less than a day, but the 'Mahatma' as an 'idea' was thought out and reworked in Gandhi as Mahatma: popular imagination in subsequent months. Even in the eyes of some local Congressmen this 'deification'—'unofficial canonization' as the Gorakhpur District, Eastern UP, Pioneer put it—assumed dangerously distended proportions by April-May 1921. 1921-2' In following the career of the Mahatma in one limited area Over a short period, this essay seeks to place the relationship between Gandhi and the peasants in a perspective somewhat different from SHAHID AMIN the view usually taken of this grand subject. We are not concerned with analysing the attributes of his charisma but with how this 'Many miracles, were previous to this affair [the riot at Chauri registered in peasant consciousness. We are also constrained by our Chaura], sedulously circulated by the designing crowd, and firmly believed by the ignorant crowd, of the Non-co-operation world of primary documentation from looking at the image of Gandhi in this district'. Gorakhpur historically—at the ideas and beliefs about the Mahatma —M. B. Dixit, Committing Magistrate, that percolated into the region before his visit and the transformations, Chauri Chaura Trials. if any, that image underwent as a result of his visit. Most of the rumours about the Mahatma.'spratap (power/glory) were reported in the local press between February and May 1921. And as our sample I of fifty fairly elaborate 'stories' spans this rather brief period, we cannot fully indicate what happens to the 'deified' image after the Gandhi visited the district of Gorakhpur in eastern UP on 8 February rioting at Chauri Chaura in early 1922 and the subsequent withdrawal 1921, addressed a monster meeting variously estimated at between 1 of the Non-Co-operation movement.

  • Prime Minister of Cambodia Office of the Prime Minister Royal Government of Cambodia Government Peace Building No
His Excellency Samdech Techo Hun Sen Prime Minister of Cambodia Office of the Prime Minister Royal Government of Cambodia Government Peace Building No. 38, Confederation Russia Blvd (110) Phnom Penh Cambodia [email protected] May 22, 2020 Re: The Threat of the Dog Meat Trade to Cambodia Dear Prime Minister Hun Sen, We are writing on behalf of the Asia for Animals Coalition, representing international animal welfare and conservation organizations regarding our concerns about the dog meat trade in Cambodia and its threat to public health, in light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the worsening situation of the pandemic globally and throughout Southeast Asia, with 45,2091 human coronavirus infections in the region to date, the mass trafficking, sale, and slaughter of companion animals often alongside wild animals throughout the Kingdom continues unchallenged. The dog meat trade is rampant in Cambodia, involving the slaughter and consumption of up to 3 million dogs each year, many of them stolen pets, with an unknown number trafficked regularly into neighboring Vietnam. Research suggests that only 12% of Cambodians regularly consume dog meat, and consumption remains a controversial practice among Khmer people.2 The dog meat trade has proven to be a significant threat to public health, facilitating the transmission of deadly diseases including rabies, cholera, and trichinella. The trade also directly undermines Cambodia’s rabies control efforts and disrupts any attempts at achieving herd immunity through mass canine vaccination programs. Despite growing global public health concerns regarding live animal interfaces and wet markets and the potential for the emergence of novel and deadly viruses, the dog meat trade in Cambodia continues to operate - even in the face of mounting calls to end this trade.

BLUE CROSS OF INDIA th 50 ANNUAL REPORT APRIL 1, 2013 to MARCH 31, 2014 www.bluecrossofindia.org BLUE CROSS OF INDIA (Recognised by the Animal Welfare Board of India, Govt. of India) Founders: Capt. V. Sundaram & Mrs. Usha Sundaram The 50th Anniversary of an organisation is not too common an occurrence for most organisations and even rarer for animal welfare groups. This is also an appropriate time to sit down and see what we have really achieved in the last half-century and what we should try to achieve in the next. It is also an even rarer event that five of the original nine founders are still around, with three of them actively involved in the work they began. The other two, in their nineties, are still with us in spirit but even more importantly, the spirit of the four no longer in our presence, guides us in what we do today. Regd. CHAPTER III SELECTED HOSPITALS IN AHMEDNAGAR DISTRICT 3.1 Introduction In this chapter an earnest attempt is made by researcher to compile and present an overview of the private hospitals in Ahmednagar district which have been selected for the present study. The selection of hospitals is already been discussed in the earlier chapter where in it has been deliberated that those private hospitals having bed size of more than 100 beds and which have been operating for more than 10 years are selected. The reason for selecting these hospitals basically lies in the premise that these hospitals have been revered as the best private hospitals in the district. The profile of 10 hospitals in terms of their establishment year, vision, mission, organizational structure, departments, facilities is been discussed. 3.2 Pravara Medical Hospital, Loni Pravara Medical Hospital owing its allegiance to Pravara Medical trust hereafter referred as (PMT) is a comprehensive Medical and Health Care center catering to Primary to Tertiary Care.
