Money’s invisible prisons 10. The hidden side of the oligarchs New media empires are emerging in Turkey, China, Russia and India, often with the blessing of the political authorities. Their owners exercise strict control over news and opinion, putting them in the service of their governments. 16. Oligarchs who came in from the cold During Russian capitalism’s crazy initial years, a select few were able to take advantage of privatization, including the privatization of news media. But only media empires that are completely loyal to the Kremlin have been able to survive since Vladimir Putin took over. 22. Can a politician be a regular media owner? In public life, how can you be both an actor and an objective observer at the same time? Obviously you cannot, not without conflicts of interest. Nonetheless, politicians who are also media owners are to be found eve- rywhere, even in leading western democracies such as Canada, Brazil and in Europe. And they seem to think that these conflicts of interests are not a problem. 28. The royal whim In the Arab world and India, royal families and industrial dynasties have created or acquired enormous media empires with the sole aim of magnifying their glory and prestige. -

The Rubberbandits' Guide to Satire
Estudios Irlandeses, Issue 16, 2021, pp. 79-94. https://doi.org/10.24162/EI2021-9984 ____________________________________________________________________________________________ AEDEI The Rubberbandits’ Guide to Satire: Absurdism and Social Commentary in a Cross-Media Environment Faye Mercier University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands Copyright (c) 2021 by Faye Mercier. This text may be archived and redistributed both in electronic form and in hard copy, provided that the author and journal are properly cited and no fee is charged for access. Abstract. This paper argues that through an engagement with cross-media hybridity, Irish comedy duo The Rubberbandits have established a dynamic cross-media forum that aims to restore the Irish public’s capacity for critical social and political engagement. Central to this process is The Rubberbandits’ ability to use their absurdist satire as a foundational tool that can serve as the basis of this cultural forum, while also facilitating the negotiation of social and political issues across a variety of media. Given that this cultural forum exists across different media, platforms, and formats, this paper sets out to analyse the various ways in which the duo have adapted their satirical style to suit the demands of these different media forms, and what implications this process of adaption has had on their work. Beginning with an analysis of the social and critical functions of satirical comedy more broadly, this paper will then focus on the specific brand of satirical social commentary employed by The Rubberbandits, paying particular attention to the role of absurdity in their critical engagement with prominent issues facing Irish society. As this paper will demonstrate, by embracing the hybridity of the cross- media environment, all the while maintaining their absurdist satirical style, The Rubberbandits have established a dynamic and carnivalesque cross-media forum that aims to restore the Irish public’s capacity for critical social and political engagement. -

Expatriate Voting: the Shifting Approach of Italian Policy Makers Since 2001
Expatriate voting: the shifting approach of Italian policy makers since 2001 Chiara De Lazzari This thesis is submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Health, Arts and Design Swinburne University of Technology 2017 ! ! Abstract Since 2001 Italian citizens living permanently in foreign countries can cast their vote and elect their overseas representatives for the Italian parliament. The inclusion of the Italian transnational community in Italian elections has over time created major concerns in the political arena since the elections in 2006 when votes from abroad determined the political outcome of the elections in Italy. This event generated a new debate amongst political parties and members of the institutions on the legitimacy of the expatriate voting system. This study explores the motivations that guided policy makers to introduce the expatriate voting policy in Italy to ascertain whether and how Italian policy makers have shifted their perspective in regard to the political participation of the Italian transnational community. This research also analyses the issues identified by policy makers in relation to the current expatriate voting policy since 2006 and to make predictions about the future of this policy in Italy. The study used a qualitative approach with 24 semi-structured in-depth interviews with policy makers. These included members of political parties, members of institutions, academics and experts in the field. Moreover, this research includes the document analysis of proposals submitted by MPs and Senators to review the expatriate voting policy since 2006 and the analysis of electoral turnout and electoral preferences in the foreign constituency. -

The Le Gorafi Satirical News Website: the Legacy of 'L'humour Canal+'
The Le Gorafi satirical news website: the legacy of 'l’humour Canal+' Laurence Leveneur Toulouse Capitole University In this presentation today I will talk about The Gorafi, a site of humorous information created on the model of the Onion in May 2012, during the French presidential campaign. At first a discussion thread on Twitter, Gorafi progressively became a blog, then a Web site. From 2014 until June 2015, it came in the form of a humorous clip in Le Grand Journal, a French television program broadcast on Canal+. Most of the articles on the Web site, largely leveraged on the socio-digital networks, comment on the current facts, real or imagined, in an offbeat way, mimicking and twisting press and Web codes. Embodied on television by Pablo Mira, Gorafi presents an offbeat chronicle, which parodies the continuous news channels. As such, Gorafi offers a remarkable example of Canal+ humour, using a wide range of media, but also developing a political satire, as Groland or Les Guignols also broadcast on Canal+. However, I would like to demonstrate it is also a good example to illustrate what one calls “l’esprit Canal” and its specific humour codes. I’ll start with a short analysis of Gorafi’s humour on its website and in its television chronicle. Then I will try to define “Canal+ humour style” and compare it to The Gorafi’s one. I’ll finish with an observation of Canal+ humour’s legacy on French television. 1. Le Gorafi’s website humour. “Le Gorafi” is a play on words, a reference to the French national newspaper Le Figaro, known for its conservative editorial line. -
