A life-long Bluebirds fan, he attended the match with a group of friends and had felt fine all day. At half-time he stood up to get a drink and the next thing he remembers is waking up in hospital 10 days later. Phillip collapsed having suffered a cardiac arrest. Thankfully two St John Wales volunteers were on call to attend to Mr Gold. “When we got the call over the radio that someone was having a suspected heart attack, we immediately rushed to investigate. We made it to Mr Gold within three minutes, despite having to travel up four levels of the stadium – battling through the crowds of spectators queuing at the bars. As we arrived we could see Mr Gold was unconscious and wasn’t breathing. Luckily some of the nearby spectators were off-duty doctors and had been giving him CPR to keep him alive. I opened his shirt and attached the defibrillator I was carrying. He needed three shocks, but by the time the ambulance arrived his heart was beating again.” St John Cymru Wales volunteer “On the day in question I had no inkling that there was anything wrong. I owe my life to the volunteers and doctors at the scene. I have no doubt that without St John Wales’ swift response; I would not be here today. I will always refer to that day as a miracle.” Philip Gold £12 Equips and trains a volunteer first aider a month www.stjohnwales.org.uk Charity number: 250523 About St John Cymru Wales volunteers: We currently have over 4,000 volunteers across Wales Volunteers cover over 3,000 duties each year including Six Nations rugby games, football matches, village fetes & TV recordings Around 50% of our members are under 18 Common injuries the most common complaints treated are cuts, bruises, headaches and drink-related injuries www.stjohnwales.org.uk Charity number: 250523 Katelyn saves the day Seven-year-old girl saves her younger sister when she was having a fit Tasha Lloyd, was driving home one Sunday evening when her three- year-old daughter Sky became seriously unwell. Her seven-year-old daughter Katelyn was also sitting in the back seat and shouted, “Mum, Sky’s not well!” Sky was having a fit and vomiting violently. Tasha pulled over to the side of the road and got Sky out of her car seat. Luckily Katelyn had recently joined her local division of St John Cymru Wales and knew what to do. “Katelyn made sure that Sky’s airways were open and she wasn’t choking on her vomit and then continued pressing on her fingernail to keep her awake as she kept slipping in and out of consciousness. Meanwhile I was panicking and crying as I quickly called for an ambulance. Thank goodness Katelyn was there. She knew exactly how to look after Sky, but not only that, she kept us both calm and reassured us until the ambulance arrived. The paramedics were astounded at how calmly Katelyn reacted.” Katelyn and Sky’s mum Tasha, 24 from Ebbw Vale Sky was taken to hospital where it turned out she’d had a febrile convulsion, due to a high temperature from an ear infection. She made a full recovery. Katelyn had only been volunteering with St John for two weeks when Sky fell ill, but it just shows how quickly the information sinks in. This incident shows that knowing what to do in those vital first minutes of an emergency situation could dramatically increase your chance of survival. www.stjohnwales.org.uk Charity number: 250523 Contributes towards weekly activities £20 for 2,500 children and young people a month in Wales About St John Wales youth groups: Going overseas We run over 200 weekly youth groups providing fun activities for over St John Wales youth members have 2,500 young people in Wales participated in overseas Kids aged 5-10 join our Badger groups and those aged 11-18 join Cadetstrips to countries such We teach young people important first aid and life skills as India and Zambia Our young members pick up first aid training very quickly Young members can develop their skills through the SuperBadger or Grand Prior awards www.stjohnwales.org.uk Charity number: 250523 Babysafe course helped me save my daughter’s life A Welsh mother is urging parents and carers to learn first aid, after her skills helped save her daughter’s life. Louise took part in a BabySafe course while training to be a childminder. She knew it was a legally required skill for looking after children, but didn’t realise quite how quickly she would need to use it on her own child. “Just two days after finishing the course my daughter Aimee, who was two at the time, and my eight-year-old son Morgan were eating fruit. I turned my back for a moment and Morgan starting shouting, ‘Mum, quick, Aimee’s choking! Aimee was red in the face, unable to breathe and was getting very distressed, but thanks to the training I knew exactly what to do.
