The Big Year was directed by and written by Howard Franklin. It was based on the 2004 non-fiction book The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and The Bird Obsession of Mark Obmascik. The book followed three men on a quest for a big year - a competition among birders to see and identify the largest number of bird species in North America (northern Mexico) in a calendar year. The actual men were Sandy Comito, Al Levantine and Greg Miller, who pursued The Previous Comito Record. The film uses the same premise with fictional characters. The film was released in the on October 14, 2011. Filming took place from May to July 2010. It was released in the UK on 2 December 2011. The plot of the film follows three experienced poultry, each of which intended to achieve the Big Year. This is Brad Harris (), a 36-year-old programmer from Baltimore; Stu Preissler (Steve Martin), founder and CEO of a New York company bearing his name; and a blood contractor named Kenny Bostick (Owen Wilson), who holds the current big year record of 732 birds. Bostic is obsessed with his record, but his third wife Jessica (Rosamund Pike) is concerned; it was supposed to be the year when they focused on conceiving a child. She also believes that Bostick's obsession with birds is something that destroyed his two previous marriages. He is so competitive that others use his name as a kind of profanity: Bostic! Brad is an experienced birder who can identify almost any species solely by sound. He hates his job of maintaining the software of a nuclear power plant in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. Living with his parents after a failed marriage, aborted career at Dell and dropping out of graduate school, he hopes the big year will give him a sense of purpose and perhaps even make his father proud of him. After decades of corporate success, he is ready to retire to Colorado with his architect wife. Fear of an empty schedule led him to return from the previous resignation, but now he wants his company is in the hands of two of his lieutenants (Kevin Pollack and Joel McHall). The company is in the middle of complex merger talks with a competitor, so its two anointed successors continue to call it back to New York for important meetings; to some extent he is a prisoner of his own success. A big year has been his dream for life, and he spends it with the full support of his wife. The film depicts the various incidents that occur during the big event of the year, while the trio compete with each other and many other poultry farmers to achieve the world record sighting of the greatest number of birds. Brad and Stu become friends and help each other in the competition, and Brad is attracted to fellow birders Ellie (Rashida Jones). Meanwhile, the highly competitive Bostick resorts to dirty tricks to increase his own score by undermining others. As the year draws to a close, Stu is happily retired and enjoying his newborn grandson; Brad develops a relationship with Ellie; and Bostic alone, since his wife had left him. Stu and Brad, now close friends, congratulate each other on a very big year, after each sighting of 700 bird species this year. When the results of the Big Year are published, Bostick won the competition with 755, a new record; Brad finished second; Stu was fourth. Brad thinks he (Bostick) got more birdies, but we got the most as he looks at Ellie, who came on a weekend visit. Stu smiles as he looks at his wife. The film ends with Brad and Ellie birds together on the rocky coast, while Brad admits that the bird is no longer the biggest part of his life. Stu hiking with his baby grandson (already in love with birds) in the Rocky Mountains. Bostick is on a bird adventure in China, alone and wistfully looking at a happy couple walking with their newborn baby.
