  • Refashioning the Male Body SLIDE There Is a Long and Ignoble History
Refashioning the Male Body SLIDE There is a long and ignoble history, from the Classical thought of Plato to the Enlightenment philosophy of René Descartes, of associating man with rationality and woman with the body and nature. But, of course, it would be quite wrong to assume that the male body has been somehow insignificant in the visual language of modernity. The male body is conspicuous in the iconography of the 1930s and early 1940s. In the decades running up to the Second World War, powerful male figures—stripped to the waist—rend chains, wield hammers, clasp bayonets, or brandish flags. Shifting ideologies of gender have written and rewritten themselves onto the male body throughout the twentieth century and into our own. As Klaus Theweleit describes, the masculine body of the early twentieth century is frequently transformed into a steely carapace, or sublimated into a mass of uniformed soldiers. By becoming a machine, it denies its own corporeality becoming: “a physical type devoid of drives and psyche whose instinctual energies have been smoothly and frictionlessly transformed into functions of his steel body [...] Each and every feeling tightly locked in steel armour.” The mechanized man so vividly evoked by Theweleit is a figure who could only have emerged from the processes of modernity: the “rational” systems of organization, control, and scrutiny that – as Michel Foucault describes – came to govern male-dominated institutions such as factories, prisons, the military, and asylums from the enlightenment onwards. SLIDE But in the new millennium, as the economic, gendered and ideological structures governing our lives have shifted and evolved, this modernist mode of masculine embodiment and the associated values of hegemonic masculinity have been increasingly challenged.

It’s too easy to make fun of the Met’s new “Punk: Chaos to Couture” show. There was the chipper press preview at 10 a.m. on a Monday morning bustling with well-groomed junior fashion editors in leather pants and Walter Steiger heels, the facsimile of CBGB’s bathroom circa 1975, complete with graffitied urinals and cigarette butts, and Anne Hathaway and Miley Cyrus playing platinum punk Barbies at the Costume Institute gala— mockable incongruities served up on a silver platter. It’s not that the Met team was unaware of the disparity between the show’s subject and its venue or poorly versed on its material. Richard Hell and Johnny Rotten contributed catalog essays. Andrew Bolton, curator of the Institute, assembled its dramatic Alexander Installation view of D.I.Y.: Hardware section. (© Metropolitan Museum of Art) McQueen retrospective, and he argues clear- sightedly and with verve here that punk’s defining characteristic was “customization,” a precursor to contemporary Internet culture, in which consumption and creation are closely linked. However, the work in the show only occasionally bears out this argument. It starts loudly, with the CBGB bathroom and bursts of music from the Ramones, and quickly moves to a recreation of Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s London boutique, Seditionaries, whose clothes smack of bondage gear, S&M, military uniforms and cozy red and black mohair sweaters. Ms. Westwood’s shirts, like Tits (1976-80), have their eponymous items printed on white cotton muslin. They are terrific, crude objects, undressing the wearer and violating the viewer simultaneously: as Dada as clothing can be.

  • Hedi Slimane Gets Creative at Celine
Hedi Slimane gets Creative at Celine Written by Alex Needham September 27, 2019 Not content with shocking the fashion industry with his radical takeover of Celine, Hedi Slimane is tearing up retail – turning the French house’s stores into intriguing brutalist salons. It’s midnight on Sunday in Paris, in a basement club called Le Dandy, and the team from French fashion house Celine are celebrating. The third band of the night are playing – Brooklyn punk- funkers Bodega, who provided the soundtrack for the menswear show earlier that evening. The artist David Kramer is here with his wife – Kramer’s nostalgic, witty, Technicolor paintings featured on the show’s invitation, and slogans from his work such as, “I have nostalgia for things I probably have never known,” were transposed on to the clothes and floppy straw baskets in the spring/summer 2020 collection. Dressed in jeans, boots and a white T-shirt speckled with holes, Hedi Slimane, Celine’s creative director, takes photographs of the crowd, a collection of models, friends and co-workers, who are all enjoying the chance to cut loose into Monday morning as Bodega tear into last year’s excellent single How Did This Happen? While his aesthetic is instantly recognisable – lean, sharp, rock’n’roll – Slimane has always relished the chance to open up his vision to other contributors and points of view. “He has developed a very distinct visual vocabulary,” says LA-based sculptor Oscar Tuazon, “and I think it thrives in contrast or an unexpected juxtaposition of elements.” For two decades, both as a photographer and fashion designer for Dior Homme, Saint Laurent and now Celine, Slimane has collaborated with emerging musicians.
