Rejecting the orthodoxies of British modernism, Nyman had abandoned composition in 1964, working instead as a musicologist, editing Purcell and Handel, and collecting folk music in Romania. Later he became a music critic, in which capacity he was the first to apply the word "minimalism" to music, in a 1968 review for the Spectator of Cornelius Cardew's The Great Digest. But soon a route back to composition was emerging. He wrote the libretto for Harrison Birtwistle's 1969 "dramatic pastoral" Down by the Greenwood Side. In 1977, Birtwistle commissioned him to provide arrangements of 18th-century Venetian songs for the production of Carlo Goldoni's play Il Campiello. Thrilled by the results, Nyman kept the Campiello Band together, now propelled by his own piano-playing. Soon the band's line-up mutated. The Campiello Band became the amplified Michael Nyman Band with a string quartet, three saxophones, bass trombone, bass guitar and piano.

‘Just the job for that lazy Sunday afternoon’: British Readymades and Systems Music An amplification of a paper given at the First International Conference on Minimalism, University of Wales, Bangor, 31 August–2 September 2007 Virginia Anderson, University of Nottingham THIS PAPER is concerned with definitions and their change and application over time and space. Take the term ‘systems music’, or its associated terms, ‘systems’ and ‘sys- temic music’, also ‘systematic’ music. Nobody seems to know exactly what these terms mean. In fact, the use of the term ‘systems’ became so vague that although it had appeared in the first New Grove of 1980, ‘systems’ disappeared as a definition in New Grove II in 2001. This would imply that ‘system’ is not only an old term, but a meaningless one. Is the term ‘system’ just another synonym for ‘process’, a way of structuring minimal music? Is the term ‘system’ is just outdated slang for repetitive minimalism? ‘System’ has been considered to be either a synonym or an archaism for repetitive music, sometimes both, at different times and to different scholars. However, there is a reason for bringing back the term ‘systems music’, with a clear definition. If we return ‘systems music’ to the group of British experimental com- posers who first used it, we find that it is also of use as applied to some music by this group today. Even so, we must clarify the use of the term ‘system’ within British experimental composition, because the way that each composer uses it depends on the time and situation in which it is used.

Procuramos, desde sua concepção, dedicar esta coletânea de artigos à poética da composição musical em seu sentido mais amplo, buscando dar espaço e visibilidade ao ato e pensamento criativos da composição dos dias de hoje. Interessa- va-nos colocar em perspectiva as diversas faces desse fazer, enfatizando a pluralidade, a riqueza e a profundidade com que essa esfera da cultura tem se manifestado no Bra- sil. Os processos, técnicas, métodos e procedimentos da composição até o contexto poiético mais amplo dos compositores – suas estéticas e filosofias, que, em muitos casos, se tornam interdisciplinares –, são os campos de estudo desse dossiê. Il cinquantaseienne compositore inglese è stato dagli Anni Settanta un magnifico trasvolatore, attento a sfiorare e ad attraversare con il tocco sottile e sapiente del Maestro campi diversi, persino alternativi tra loro, coniugando le ipotesi dell’avanguardia e quelle della nuova musica classica, del minimalismo e della sperimenta- zione: il tutto con ritmi serrati, per una scrittura fertile, lungo un impegno che ha attinto e ha contagiato anche il teatro, la danza e in particolare il cinema, per il quale Nyman ha siglato pagine rimaste indelebili. Qui, grazie al lungo matrimonio con il regista Peter Greenaway e agli incontri più estemporanei con altri cineasti di vaglia (Jane Campion, Volker Schlondorff, Neil Jordan) o al formazione: servizio di film di culto (“Carrington”, “Gattaca”, “Wonderland”), Michael Nyman piano, direttore Nyman ha saputo marchiare il suo cammino di autore di qualità e di successo. Sua più recente colonna sonora è quella per il film Ian Humphries violino “The Claim” di Michael Winterbotton, con Milla Jovovich Ann Morfee e Nastassja Kinski.
