Tierney SEPTEMBER 2021 BRIAR II NEWS 3 Manager’s Message Message from the Board President As we head into fall which officially begins on September 22, I want to take some time to reflect on the different activities and events we have enjoyed this summer. Once the clubhouse and pool area were able to be opened, we had our first party, our annual July 4th celebration, sponsored by the R&A Committee. 170 people attended and a fun time was had by all even though this year’s party was different from previous ones. Then in August was our Annual Hawaiian Pig Roast, an event that all residents were able to enjoy. As I looked around the pool area and heard the music, it looked and felt like the “good ol’ days”. Bocce on Tuesday mornings began while another group added horseshoes as a night activity to keep that back area busy. Residents came to the clubhouse throughout the day and at night to play cards, shoot pool, play dominoes or Mahjong. More residents could enjoy the exercise room and the library with the change in rules and hours. Exercise classes were able to expand so that more residents could participate. I am looking forward to the fall as we add more activities to our list of things to do here at GB II. This month we are anticipating the start-up of BINGO again, bowling at Ocean Lanes and pottery classes. Let’s not forget the knitting and crocheting group, the quilters and any other group activity I may have neglected to mention. Try one, you might enjoy it! When I enter our community, I see the two new signs which signal one is entering GB II. Then, at the club- house, I notice the building with its more open concept since trees were removed for the solar panels which really highlights our clubhouse area. All is looking good - our clubhouse, our grounds and our unique adult community. Your Board is looking forward to the day and time when we will be fully back to what had been normal for so long. We miss it too! Remember - When some things go wrong, take a moment to be thankful for the many things that are going right. I am thankful to be a part of this great adult community!! Being part of a community based organic market is a wonderful place to offer clean organic foods. Since 1981, I have, personally, been committed to organic foods. And have since added to that commitment a belief of no GMO ingredients in our foods. Back then, I traveled one hour—one way to a beautiful market on Long Island; where I could purchase a limited variety of organic produce and grocery. I believe I am one of the pioneers in the vision of a world of organic foods. I have been catering since I am 16 years old and after 25 years, I have created a catering menu. The foods and menus are a compilation of my career as a Chef. I have prepared meat and potatoes to vegan entrées as far as the Middle East and home again. I can not possibly include all the foods that I have prepared over the years. Here you will find some of my favorites. When it comes to catering, I believe that every event is a personal one. There is no “plug-in” menus; or cookie-cutter ideas.

  • 4JG07PB: International Foods Project
4JG-07PB Revised and adapted for use in Kentucky by Sue Burrier, former Extension Food and Nutrition Specialist, and Anna Lucas, former Extension Program Specialist for 4-H ow much do you know about the lands that have given us so many of our favorite foods and customs? After you’ve completed this 4-H project, Hyou’ll know a lot. We’ll take fascinating “tours” of four countries—Mexico, Germany, Italy, and Japan—sampling their foods and sharing their traditions. With the help of neighbors, friends, and relatives of different nationalities, you can bring each of these lands right into your meeting room. You can also learn a great deal from foreign restaurants, magazines, newspapers, radio, television, travel folders, films or slides from airlines, and your local schools. Most embassies, consulates, and travel bureaus will send information free or for a small charge. Enhance your project with authentic music and decorations, which are often easy to come by. Many supermarkets carry a wide choice of international foods. Plan to have at least two meetings devoted to each country. You’ll find the meetings so interesting you may even want to plan more! Mexico these foods, brought them back to Spain. Their popularity spread across Europe and, eventually, throughout the world. The Spaniards, in turn, brought some of their favorite foods to Mexico, including rice, olives, and wine. Many people believe that all Mexican foods are hot and spicy. In reality, foods and meals in Mexico vary as much as they do in the United States. Favorite Foods Corn, dried beans, and chiles (CHI-lays) are traditional and basic in the Mexican diet.
