Tierney SEPTEMBER 2021 BRIAR II NEWS 3 Manager’s Message

Message from the Board President As we head into fall which officially begins on September 22, I want to take some time to reflect on the different activities and events we have enjoyed this summer. Once the clubhouse and pool area were able to be opened, we had our first party, our annual July 4th celebration, sponsored by the R&A Committee. 170 people attended and a fun time was had by all even though this year’s party was different from previous ones. Then in August was our Annual Hawaiian Pig Roast, an event that all residents were able to enjoy. As I looked around the pool area and heard the music, it looked and felt like the “good ol’ days”. Bocce on Tuesday mornings began while another group added horseshoes as a night activity to keep that back area busy. Residents came to the clubhouse throughout the day and at night to play cards, shoot pool, play dominoes or Mahjong. More residents could enjoy the exercise room and the library with the change in rules and hours. Exercise classes were able to expand so that more residents could participate. I am looking forward to the fall as we add more activities to our list of things to do here at GB II. This month we are anticipating the start-up of BINGO again, bowling at Ocean Lanes and pottery classes. Let’s not forget the knitting and crocheting group, the quilters and any other group activity I may have neglected to mention. Try one, you might enjoy it! When I enter our community, I see the two new signs which signal one is entering GB II. Then, at the club- house, I notice the building with its more open concept since trees were removed for the solar panels which really highlights our clubhouse area. All is looking good - our clubhouse, our grounds and our unique adult community. Your Board is looking forward to the day and time when we will be fully back to what had been normal for so long. We miss it too! Remember - When some things go wrong, take a moment to be thankful for the many things that are going right. I am thankful to be a part of this great adult community!! Ann Marie Willcox

And it didn’t have to be. Long gone is that Sunday drive we did with the kids in the roadster with the top down. Earlier still, those classic cars we met on the drive doing the same thing. As a kid I enjoyed identifying the Packards, LaSalles, Hudsons, Studebakers, sometimes a Duisenberg or a Boat-tailed Au- burn as we rode in my father’s old Nash with the wooden spokes. To drive to a park for a picnic was a really big event. Life was simpler then. Those big classics had eight and 12 cylinders and got maybe five miles to a gallon. They were beautiful. And gas was cheap. At least it has come down to choices; I’ve owned big cars and small cars depending on my own desire and need. Be it expensive or cheap, again my choice. We are being led into a situation where the choices are severely limited. Like the incandescent light bulb, we are manipulated into thinking that those funny-looking spaghetti tubes will be better for the environment. Or change your entire air conditioning system that uses a different cooling agent instead of the cheaper Freon. To pursue my own bliss means choices, a car that fits my own life. I can’t see where a battery and electric mo- tor or a windmill will ever drive the pulpwood truck I’m always behind, up a hill; at least not in my lifetime. The world isn’t level, or is it perpetually downhill? I want my high octane to pass that pulpwood truck. I want to take that Sunday drive and explore the other side of the hill. And I shouldn’t have to go broke to do it. That replacement car will probably have all those navi- gational things and a ten-speaker surround sound system, hot and cold seats, robotic steering. Lovely. Hopefully we should be able to take it out of the garage once in a while. Maybe even on a Sunday. (Originally appeared in July 2011)

30 BRIAR II NEWS SEPTEMBER 2021 Restaurant Review SEBASTIAN’S SCHNITZEL HAUS, Wrightstown, NJ By Judy Muldoon Schnitzel Haus is expensive, but the food is delicious. Portions are generous and the service is great! The decor is...well...unique. The bathrooms are goofy. Imagine my surprise when I entered the stall (walls were covered with various artwork) and was greeted by a large life-like doll sitting in a highchair! Note: That large party of 20 or so was a sweet group of family and friends who were gathered for a repast fol- lowing a funeral. While speaking to them we learned that one of the gentlemen was from Winding River and knew some folks in Greenbriar 2!

38 BRIAR II NEWS SEPTEMBER 2021 Travel Photography

This month I’d like to talk a little about travel photography. I ran this column a few years ago, but, with COVID restrictions lifting, we’re starting to travel again, so I thought it was a good time to run it again. It’s great to bring back wonderful images of the trip; and a camera that is easy to carry, and takes quality images, is important. Carrying a bulky camera bag or heavy camera will not make your vacation more pleasurable. Photographing the buildings, scenery, and people is nice, but images that capture mood or culture are the best. It’s good to include yourself, family, and friends in some of the images, but photographing the local people in their environment will add culture and fl avor. I’ve included some of my Bermuda images. If you’re familiar with your camera, try some shots on aperture priority and shoot at F8 or F11 to add depth and sharpness. Make certain you don’t center your subjects and try to fi ll the frame. When you return home, you may want to print a coff ee table book of the trip. It’s a great way to show off your images. There are many online services that publish nice photo books. That’s it for this month. As always you can send me an email at [email protected]. Visit my web site at www.kirmsphotography.com if you’d like to see more of my images. Keep shooting and trying to improve your images, but always have fun with your camera.
