Wilhelm Weitling Und Die Deutsche Politische Handwerkerlyrik Im Vormarz WOLFGANG SCHIEDER WILHELM WEITLING UND DIE DEUTSCHE POLITISCHE HANDWERKERLYRIK IM VORMARZ Vergessene politische Lieder aus der Friihzeit des deutschen Friihsozialisten. Im Juliheft 18 51 der Zeitschrift ,,Die Republik der Arbeiter", die Wilhelm Weitling 1850-1855 in New York herausgab, machte der deutsche Frtihsozialist eine selbstbiographische Angabe, der die For- schung bisher noch nicht nachgegangen ist. Um sich gegen verschie- dene Angriffe zu verteidigen, veroffentlichte Weitling dort under dem Titel ,,t)bersicht der Erfolge einer zwolfjahrigen Propaganda mit bezug auf die Geldpunkte" eine Art von literarischem Rechenschaf ts- bericht, in dem er u.a. folgendes schrieb: ,,Im Jahre 1838 wurde mir in Paris von der Zentralbehorde unserer Verbindung, der ich seit kurzem mit angehorte, der Auftrag: die Moglichkeit der Giitergemeinschaft durch eine Schrift zu veranschaulichen, weil die Mitglieder eine solche Schrift verlangten. Ich hatte einen Mitbewerber, aber die Mitglieder der Zentralbehorde entschieden sich einstimmig fiir meine Schrift: 'Die Menschheit, wie sie ist und wie sie sein sollte' Ich verfaBte die Schrift zu einer Zeit, in welcher ich jeden Abend bis 10 und 11 Uhr und jeden Sonntag bis 12 Uhr mittags als Schneidergeselle arbeiten muBte. Ich uberset^te Lamennais' 'Buch des Volkes' und gab das Manuskript einem Agenten unserer Verbindung fiir die Verbindung in Deutschland gratis mit. Ich lieferte 12 Lieder %u den ' Volksklangen', versteht sich gleichfalls gratis. Das waren meine ersten literarischen Produktionen... "1 Mit Ausnahme der ,,Menschheit", Weitlings Erstlingsschrift, sind sie bis heute unbekannt geblieben. Hinsichtlich der Ubersetzung von Lamennais' ,,Livre du peuple" ist das verstandlich; denn das Manuskript Weitlings diirfte aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach niemals gedruckt worden sein. Die beiden einzigen deutschen Ubersetzungen des ,,Livre du peuple" aus der Zeit des Vormarz, die 1838 in der Schweiz erschienen (in Liestal bei 1 Zitiert bei Hermann Schliiter, Die Anfange der deutschen Arbeiterbewegung in Amerika, Stuttgart 1907, S. 58 f. Bei der Liestaler tjbersetzung ist im iibrigen auch der Fluent- ling Rauschenplat als Ubersetzer angegeben. Ware seine Obersetzung gedruckt worden, ha'tte das Weitling auBerdem in seinem oben zitierten Rechenschaftsbericht sicherlich erwahnt. Anders verhalt es sich aber mit den ,,Volksklangen". Dieses Liederbuch ist tat- sachlich erschienen und hat sich auch in je einem Exemplar an zwei verschiedenen Stellen erhalten: in der Bayrischen Staatsbibliothek Miinchen und in der Bibliotheque Nationale et Universitaire in StraBburg. DaB es sich in StraBburg befindet, ist nicht weiter verwunder- lich, da dort vor 1848 fast standig geheime oder offentliche Klubs deutscher Fluchtlinge und Handwerker bestanden, in denen Lieder- biicher dieser Art zirkulierten.1 Erstaunlich ist jedoch der Miinchner Fund. Vermutlich stammt das dortige Exemplar, wie auch sonst Schriften dieser Art, aus dem Material der vormarzlichen Zensur- polizei in Bayern, die beschlagnahmte ,,revolutionare Schriften" offenbar gelegentlich an die heutige Staatsbibliothek abgegeben hat. Die ,,Volksklange" werden jedenfalls neben der ,,Menschheit" und den beiden Schweizer Zeitschriften Weitlings, dem ,,Hiilferuf der deutschen Jugend" und der „ Jungen Generation", von denen auch jeweils ein vollsta'ndiges Exemplar in der Staatsbibliothek vorhanden ist2, sowie anderen Flugschriften in einer Fahndungsanweisung des Bayerischen Ministeriums des Innern an das des AuBern vom 24.11. 1842 genannt.3 In Paris sowie auch in der Schweiz, dem Haupttatig- keitsfeld Weitlings, sind die ,,Volksklange" in keiner Bibliothek nach- zuweisen, sodaB die beiden genannten Exemplare als einzige erhalten geblieben sein diirften, falls nicht durch Archivfunde noch weitere zutage gefordert werden. EinschlieBlich eines Inhaltsverzeichnisses hat es 190 Seiten im Oktavformat und enthalt insgesamt 100 Lieder - teils mit, teils ohne Verfasserangabe — in einer Reihenfolge, deren Ordnungsprinzip nicht erkennbar ist. Wer die Volks- klange" herausgegeben hat, ist ihnen nicht zu entnehmen. Audi finden sich sonstwo keine eindeutigen Hinweise dazu; doch kommt wohl am ehesten der aus Bensberg bei Koln kommende Jour- nalist und Literat Friedrich Wilhelm German Maurer dafiir in Frage, der seit 1833 in Paris als Hauslehrer tatig war.1 Von diesem stammt namlich der das Liederbuch einleitende ,,Zuspruch an die groBen Kampfer fur die heilige Sache des Vaterlandes und der Menschheit", der in groBeren Lettern als alle iibrigen Lieder gesetzt ist.2 Maurer kommt auch am ehesten als Herausgeber oder Redakteur der „ Volksklange" in Betracht, wenn man das Publikum in Rechnung stellt, fiir das das Liederbuch zusammengestellt worden ist. Wie sich aus der Uber- priifung der Verfasser der in den ,,Volksklangen" gesammelten Lieder ergibt,j scheint dieses Liederbuch namlich mit allergroBter Wahr- scheinlichkeit innerhalb des ,,Bundes der Gerechten", dem seit etwa 1837/38 in Paris neben dem alteren ,,Bund der Geachteten" bestehen- den Geheimbund deutscher Handwerksgesellen und Fliichtlinge, entstanden zu sein.3 Neben Maurer, der nachweislich zu den fiihren- den Mitgliedern des ,,Bundes der Gerechten" gehorte4 fer soil Weitling erst so weit gebracht haben, ordentliches Hochdeutsch zu sprechen und zu schreiben5 und wurde von diesem in einem spateren 1 Zu Maurer vgl. Aus einem im August 1833 erschienenen Flugblatt des ,,Deutschen Volksvereins" (erhalten im Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv Wien als Beilage zu Stuck 368 von Faszikel 197 der Deutschen Akten) geht hervor, daC Maurer kurz vor Erscheinen dieses Flugblattes in den ,,Volksverein" eingetreten ist. Das Flugblatt enthalt namlich ein anonymes Gedicht mit dem Titel ,,GruC eines neuaufgenommenen Patrioten", das in den „Volksklangen" unter Maurers Namen abgedruckt ist. Nach Hermann Ewerbecks (allerdings nicht unbedingt zuverlassigem) Bericht soil Maurer zu den Redakteuren der Flugblatter des ,,Deutschen Volksvereins" gehort haben. (Vgl. Karl Schapper, der spatere Londoner Bundesfuhrer, von dem ein Lied in die ,,Volksklange" gekommen ist,3 wurde in Paris in die Untersuchungen nach dem Putsch Blanquis und Barbes vom 12. /13.     Marx and Engels and the Communist Movement The following article is a chapter from The Idea: Anarchist Communism, Past, Present and Future by Nick Heath. We should point out that whilst we regard Marx's analysis of capitalism and class society as a very important contribution to revolutionary ideas, we are critical of his attitudes and behaviour within both the Communist League and the First International. Marx was to re-iterate his ideas and to put them into practice in all his time in the working class movement. “Without parties no development, without division no progress” he was to write (polemic with the Kölnische Zeitung newspaper, 1842). In a much later letter to Bebel written in 1873, Engels sums up this approach: “For the rest, old Hegel has already said it; a party proves itself a victorious party by the fact that it splits and can stand the split. The movement of the proletariat necessarily passes through stages of development; at every stage one section of the people lags behind and does not join in the further advance; and this alone explains why it is that actually the “solidarity of the proletariat” is everywhere realised in different party groupings which carry on life and death feuds with one another”. The mythology of Marxism implies that the theory of communism was perfected by Marx and Engels without really taking into consideration all that had gone before and that communism, organised more or less into a loose movement, was created by artisans and workers as a result of their practical experiences in the French Revolution and the events of the 1830s, as well as their continuing theoretical labours.

Rothbard* Marx as Millennia1 Communist he key to the intricate and massive system of thought created by Karl Marx is at bottom a simple one: Karl Marx was a Tcommunist. A seemingly trite and banal statement set along- side Marxism's myriad of jargon-ridden concepts in philosophy, eco- nomics, and culture, yet Marx's devotion to communism was his crucial focus, far more central than the class struggle, the dialectic, the theory of surplus value, and all the rest. Communism was the great goal, the vision, the desideratum, the ultimate end that would make the sufferings of mankind throughout history worthwhile. History is the history of suffering, of class struggle, of the exploitation of man by man. In the same way as the return of the Messiah, in Christian theology, will put an end to history and establish a new heaven and a new earth, so the establishment of communism would put an end to human history. And just as for post-millennia1 Chris- tians, man, led by God's prophets and saints, will establish a Kingdom of God on Earth (for pre-millennials, Jesus will have many human assistants in setting up such a kingdom), so, for Marx and other schools of communists, mankind, led by a vanguard of secular saints, will establish a secularized Kingdom of Heaven on earth. In messianic religious movements, the millennium is invariably established by a mighty, violent upheaval, an Armageddon, a great apocalyptic war between good and evil. After this titanic conflict, a millennium, a new age, of peace and harmony, of the reign of justice, will be installed upon the earth.

    chapter � The iwma and Its Precursors in London, c. 1830–1860 Fabrice Bensimon The discussion of the origins of the International Working Men's Association (iwma) is as old as the Association itself. Right from its beginnings, the founding members defined what they saw as its origins. Since then, and in particu- lar with the development of a scientific study of the iwma in the twentieth century, several questions have been raised. The first is the militant origins in the various steps to the founding of the association on 28 September 1864. Who were these activists? Did the scheme of an international association of workers originate long before, or just recently? Was it a linear or rather a pro- tracted progress? What were the meanings that were given to “international- ism”? Another question relates to the longer-term assessment of the growth of working-class internationalism: did it exist, and if it did, according to what patterns did it develop? A possible third question is the study of its fortune: why was the iwma so different from previous attempts? Two broad approaches have been used. The “internal” one, best exempli- fied by the work of Arthur Lehning, has been the minute research on indi- viduals, on the small groups of refugees, trade unionists and political activists whose ideas and commitments led to the creation of the iwma.1 A more “ex- ternal” approach has consisted in addressing the issue of why this association in particular was so successful, while others had failed before: were economic circumstances different? Had labour markets changed? Had working-class practices been transformed in Britain and on the continent? And so on.

    chapter � The iwma and Its Precursors in London, c. 1830–1860 Fabrice Bensimon The discussion of the origins of the International Working Men's Association (iwma) is as old as the Association itself. Right from its beginnings, the founding members defined what they saw as its origins. Since then, and in particu- lar with the development of a scientific study of the iwma in the twentieth century, several questions have been raised. The first is the militant origins in the various steps to the founding of the association on 28 September 1864. Who were these activists? Did the scheme of an international association of workers originate long before, or just recently? Was it a linear or rather a pro- tracted progress? What were the meanings that were given to “international- ism”? Another question relates to the longer-term assessment of the growth of working-class internationalism: did it exist, and if it did, according to what patterns did it develop? A possible third question is the study of its fortune: why was the iwma so different from previous attempts? Two broad approaches have been used. The “internal” one, best exempli- fied by the work of Arthur Lehning, has been the minute research on indi- viduals, on the small groups of refugees, trade unionists and political activists whose ideas and commitments led to the creation of the iwma.1 A more “ex- ternal” approach has consisted in addressing the issue of why this association in particular was so successful, while others had failed before: were economic circumstances different? Had labour markets changed? Had working-class practices been transformed in Britain and on the continent? And so on.

    THE PRINCIPLE OF SELF-EMANCIPATION IN MARX AND ENGELS* Hal Draper THERE can be little doubt that Marx and Engels would have agreed with Lenin's nutshell definition of Marxism as "the theory and prac- tice of the proletarian revolution." In this violently compressed formula, the key component is not the unity of theory and practice; unfortunately that has become a platitude. Nor is it "revolution"; unfortunately that has become an ambiguity. The key is the word "proletarian"-the class-character component. But "proletarian revolution" too, very early, took on a considerable element of ambivalence, for it could be and was applied to two different patterns. In one pattern, the proletariat carries out its own liberating revolution. In the other, the proletariat is used to carry out a revolution. The first pattern is new; the second is ancient. But Marx and Engels were the first socialist thinkers to be sensitive to the distinction. Naturally so : since they were also the first to propose that, for the first time in the history of the world, the exploited bottom stratum of workers in society was in position to impress its own class character on a new social order.
