Temperance in the Modern World Temperance in the modern world In Pope Francis’ continuing diagnosis of the world’s ills, elaborated on thoroughly in his most recent encyclical Laudato Si‘ (On Care for Our Common Home), consumerism — excess consumption of material goods — ranks consistently at or near the top of the list. Consumerism is one face of the maldistribution of wealth, the other face of which is poverty. The pope calls it a “poison” that reflects “emptiness of meaning and values.” Collective consumerism is among the symptoms of what Pope St. John Paul II called “superdevelopment.” This aberration, he explained, arises from “excessive availability of every kind of material goods, for the benefit of certain social groups” and is expressed in an obsessive quest to own and consume more and more (Sollicitudo Rei Socialis, No. 28). The cure for this disease of the spirit, considered as a social problem, is the practice of social justice in economic policies, practices and laws. On the individual level, too, each of us is tempted to consumerism and has social justice responsibilities. But how are ordinary people to practice social justice? The answer is temperance. Cumulatively, temperance can make a real contribution to social justice. One person living temperately gives a good example. A multitude living temperately can change a nation, or even the world, for the better. Pope Francis makes much the same point in his encyclical, Laudato Si‘, where he uses the word “sobriety” to describe an attitude equivalent to temperance. Living this way, he writes, means “living life to the full … learning familiarity with the simplest things and how to enjoy them” (No. 223). Examples By long tradition, temperance has been understood as the virtue of moderation in food, drink and sex. And so it is. But temperance should also be seen in broader terms — an insight dating to Aristotle. 3 ways to practice temperance Practicing temperance doesn’t have to be complicated, and you can grow a lot from simple self-discipline. While LifeTeen suggested many of these practices for Lent, temperance is a great virtue to practice any time of the year. Consider: • Limiting screen time, especially apps, websites or programs that promote unnecessary advertisements • Waking up the first time your alarm clock goes off. • Donating extra clothes in your wardrobe to charity. Source: LifeTeen Writing about “detachment” in a little book called “The Forge,” St. Josemaria Escriva, founder of Opus Dei, remarks: “Whoever really lives his faith knows that the goods of the world are means, and uses them generously, heroically.” What this means is that temperance, along with closely allied virtues such as detachment and chastity, isn’t just about avoiding this or that. Temperance, detachment and chastity serve a fundamentally positive purpose. They tell us something of great importance about using the goods of this world — as St. Josemaria says — generously and even “heroically.” Temperance is about growing in freedom. It’s about making us, through our acquisition and use of worldly goods, increasingly more able to choose the right thing in the right way for the right reason, and to act accordingly. Certainly temperance does involve moderation in regard to food, drink and sex. But it also functions in regard to other things as well. Here some examples might help. For starters, then, how about something like using money well? What about seeking power and prestige not for their own sakes but only for the opportunities they provide to be of service to others? Or avoiding workaholism — giving too much time and attention to the job at the expense of other important things like family life? Maybe making a place for recreation and hobbies in your life but not allowing them to dominate it? One of the best dramatizations I’ve ever seen of what intemperance looks like is the famous American movie “Citizen Kane,” directed by Orson Welles and starring Welles himself in the title role. “Citizen Kane” tells the story of a man with exceptional vision and leadership gifts, together with the intention — at least at the start of his career — of making good use of them. Over the course of a lifetime, though, he is corrupted and in the end morally destroyed by his intemperance that takes the form of a towering, insatiable lust for power. The film is a memorable character study — and a frightening one. Societal pressure Movies and literature aside, it’s easy to find illustrations of intemperance in everyday life. Here is one instance drawn from personal observation. I live in a pleasant neighborhood of attractive old houses. In recent years, it’s become a routine thing for a developer to buy one of these houses, tear it down and replace it with a new house that’s too large for the lot, too large in relation to the houses around it and too large for the neighborhood as a whole. And, of course, carrying a too-large price tag as well. Here is what might be called architectural intemperance, driven by vanity and the profit motive. It hardly needs saying that our secular culture does a lot to create the insidious pressure that’s constantly brought to bear against the practice of temperance. Advertising has a big role here. Some years ago, I was invited to draft a statement on advertising for one of the Vatican departments. Trying to be as positive as I could, I concluded that advertising does serve some very useful purposes — disseminating information, keeping the economy humming and even providing entertainment (often, the ads really are better than the shows). I also found that the fundamental purpose of advertising is to get people to feel a need for something they didn’t need before — a product or a candidate for office, as the case may be. Now, there’s nothing wrong with that approach if the product or the candidate is truly beneficial. But if not, the advertising is harmful. Consider the army of ads for luxury automobiles and high-priced electronic stuff. It is possible that somebody actually needs these things and will benefit from having them. But most of us would derive few if any real benefits from acquiring such items. In which case, it’s wrong for advertisers to attempt to manipulate us into feeling that we somehow need things that are so inconsequential. Acquiring the virtue In the face of all the inducements against the practice of temperance that the world throws at us today, how can people hope to acquire this indispensable virtue? The first step is introspection. Getting to know ourselves better — in this case, getting a realistic understanding of the species of intemperance that’s a problem for each of us. Almost certainly it’s something, and to fight it we have to find out what it is. Eating or drinking too much? At least those are fairly obvious faults. But if it’s something more subtle, it may require some serious effort to bring it out into the light. In that case, we may benefit from an experienced adviser who knows us well. That’s what spiritual direction is all about. Not that a spiritual director will tell you flat-out what your problem is and what you should do about it. But a good one can help guide you to finding those things out for yourself. Bear in mind, too, that regular, repeated acts of voluntary self- denial are classic means for acquiring the habit of temperance. And among them is fasting. In recent times, the Church has greatly reduced its laws on fasting. That leaves it up to us to take up the slack for ourselves. Here it may be useful to recall something the Catholic philosopher Josef Pieper says in the chapter on temperance in his wonderful book “The Four Cardinal Virtues.” (Pieper wrote the book before the Church relaxed its fasting laws, but what he says is still eminently sound.) Fasting, he remarks, is often thought to be “something extraordinary,” something only for ascetics and saints, but St. Thomas Aquinas calls it “a commandment of the natural law … intended for the average Christian.” Pieper goes on: “Whoever has not reached the maturity of perfection — that is, all of us ordinary Christians — could not preserve, without recourse to the medicine, the discipline, of fasting, that inner order by virtue of which the turbulence of sensuality is kept in check and the spirit liberated. … “Our natural duty obliges us to pay dearly so that we may become what we are by essence: the free moral person in full possession of himself.” Temperance, supported by a tried and true practice like fasting, is the key to doing that. And the reward is great. As Pope Francis says in praising sobriety, “Happiness means knowing how to limit some needs which only diminish us, and being open to the many different possibilities which life can offer” (Laudato Si‘, No. 223). Monasticism is the heart of the Christian Church. It is radical discipleship to Christ, taking the Lord at His word in the Scriptures, and striving to live by it in an integral way. Monasticism is not about being all dressed up. It is not about doing all the church services. It is not about being involved in church politics, or even knowing about them. Monasticism is not about religion—all the practices, beliefs, rituals and traditions. It is not about ascetic acts. It is not about a solitary life of pursuing one’s own religious path. Monasticism is about living the Gospel without compromise. It is about living in Christ by the Holy Spirit, and growing by grace to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Monasticism is about life lived in obedience to Christ, in self-denial and bearing the cross of whatever suffering God sends us to help us work out our salvation. Monasticism is about working out our salvation in a community of like- minded men, by learning to love our brother “who is our life” (St Silouan). A monastery is a single body, a sacramental community of the Church, like a marriage. It is a community in which each is present to help the other work out his salvation. We are not saved alone. We are saved as the Body of Christ.

If behind the terminologies there is a construct, a path, a trace was left in the production’s trajectory whereby knowledge could be reached and the interests of research cleared up. Once exposed to reasoning and academic curiosity it may provoke a lively discussion about such an important theme and incite an opening to an issue poorly argued in universities. In the modern regime of historicity, man and woman can now be analysed based on their subjectivities and in the place they belong in the world and not only by "the tests of reason", opening new ways to the researcher to understand them.

THE CONCEPT OF DHARMA The Sanskrit word for ethics is dharma (“to hold”). It signifies that which upholds or embodies law, custom, and religion, and is analogous to the concept of ‘Natural Law’ in Christian ethics, though the idea of ‘law’ should not detract from its dynamic character. Dharma is activity, mobil- ity, and is possessed of catalytic qualities. By contrast, a-dharma is stasis, stoppage, and therefore unnatural. From the beginning of Indian civilization, the Indian mind has chiefly been preoccupied with the notion of dharma. K. N. Upadhyaya notes that “the persistence and intensity with which the inquiry into dharma has been pursued is mainly on account of the firm conviction of the Indian people that dharma constitutes the differentia of man,” just as in Western philosophy, following Aristotle, rationality has been upheld as the mark that distinguishes humans from all other creatures.1 Notwithstanding this historic preoccupation with dharma, the Hindu scriptures do not have systematic discussions of moral doctrines, fash- ioned in the manner of Aristotelian or Thomistic models. At the same time Hindu scriptures are rich repositories of certain theoretical state- ments that define the shape of reality and the nature of things, along with prescriptive and practical sayings, aimed at the cultivation of moral be- havior. The terminology in which these ideas and ideals are expressed is richly suggestive, making it possible to reconstruct these fertile fragments into models of systematic ethics. This imaginative device, found in both his early and late works, is often dismissed because it is misunderstood as an exercise in moral geometry. This essay discusses in more detail the subjective mechanics of the original position; while sympathetic of Rawls’ application of the veil of ignorance, I distinguish between a thick and thin veil, whereby I promote the latter. The final section makes a connection between the simulation of the original position and the religious practice of asceticism. Introduction The eruption of theoretical works on identity in the last decade constitutes nothing less than an ascending trend in political philosophy and cultural studies.1 My text, Political Theology and Pluralism,2 contributes to the cascade of monographs that make the topic of identity of central importance to the messy and complex exchange of reasons concerning policy and morality that unfolds in public life. The book, more precisely, touches on identity in the form of religious self-expression (and more specifically, Christian self-expression). While I explore the practical strategy of “public dialogue” in the vocabulary of ascetic mindfulness, and while I elect to exploit a certain key category in John Rawls (the vocabulary of “overlapping consensus”), I do not discuss in that book the subjective dynamics of the practice of employing the veil of ignorance, a stance adopted in the original position, a device of representation made so famous by Rawls.

(USA) Online ISSN: 2249-460x & Print ISSN: 0975-587X Detachment and Faith By Susan Visvanathan Introduction - The two, detachment and faith, seem contradictory, and yet theologians know that every one of us lives parallel existences, contributing not to the dilemma of compulsory choice, but engaging with co-existence as a principle of rationality. This relativism is something that sociologists have accepte as compartment alisation. The debate goes back in Indian Sociology, at least to the work of M.N. Srinivas (1996) and Milton Singer (1972), and fore grounded by Robert Redfield and his classic work on Mexico (1973). In the 60s of the last century, it was understood that when scientists went to the laboratory, they took off their traditional identities and put on their scientific roles, and nothing was lost. Renny Thomas, in a recent work, has argued that the scientists in India see no disjunction between their acceptance of religious beliefs and the practice of them, as these are cultural idioms of the society in which they live (Thomas 2015). Existentially, how do human beings live in disparate worlds, and come to terms with the many different codes of culture without creating schism in themselves? In the early medieval period, certain followers of western Christianity concerned themselves with living ascetically ideal lives in order to reach redemption. This type of lifestyle included a withdrawal from society. To many, solitude could lead to the eventual obtainment of the ascetic goal. Solitude, however, was not the only requirement for those who desired a spiritual lifestyle. Individuals who longed for purity of heart and Christian reward would only yield results by keeping several other aspects of Christianity in mind, “Key notions…are…the importance of scripture, both as a source of ideas and, through recitation, as a means to tranquility and self-control; the value ascribed to individual freedom…and the awareness of God’s presence as both the context and the focus of work and prayer.”1 Together, a solitary lifestyle and the freedom that accompanies it, the importance of scripture, and the everlasting presence of God came to characterize the existence of those who strove to work towards complete austerity. In this thesis, I hope to explore one fork of the ascetic path – monasticism. Communal monastic living proved to be popular in the late antique and early medieval periods.

Based on extensive ethnographic research in Ethiopia between 2015 and 2017, this project examines the ways in which repatriated Rastafari use music to transform their Promised Land into a reality amidst various challenges. Since they are denied legal citizenship, Rastafari deploy reggae in creative and strategic ways to gain cultural citizenship and recognition in Ethiopia. This research examines how reggae music operates as a productive mechanism, that is, how human actors use music to produce social and tangible phenomena in the world. Combining theories on music’s productive capabilities with Rastafari ideologies on word-sound, this research further seeks to provide deeper insight into the ways Rastafari effect change through performative arts. I examine how Rastafari mobilize particular discourses that both challenge and reproduce hegemonic systems, creating space for themselves in Ethiopia through music. Rastafari use reggae in strategic ways to insert themselves into the contested national narratives of Ethiopia, and participate in the practice of space-making in Addis Ababa and Shashemene through sound projects.
