Based on a misidentified type species; McCulloch's D. jaculiferus (not of Cuvier 1818) = Allomycterus pilatus Whitley 1931. •Synonym of Dicotylichthys Kaup 1855, but a valid subgenus Allomycterus -- (Fraser-Brunner 1943:17 [ref. 1495]). •Valid as Allomycterus McCulloch 1921 -- (Leis 1984:448 [ref. 13659], Gomon et al. 1994:913 [ref. 22532], Leis 2006:86 [ref. 28932], Bray et al. 2006:1931 [ref. 29091], Gomon 2008:857 [ref. 30616], Leis 2015:1742 [ref. 34323]). Diodon atringa Linnaeus 1758. Type by monotypy; one species but four subspecies; type is the nominate subspecies. Le Danois apparently misspelled Linnaeus' species as atinga.
