They are portrayed as never so happy as when they are preaching, and so it is not sUrprising that a centUry later in 1853 W. J. Conybeare caricatUred the evangelical clergyman as being ‘oUt of his element in a parish … what he likes is, not a parish, bUt a congregation. The possession of a chapel in a large town, which he may fill with his disciples, is his idea of clerical UsefUlness’. 2 This statement may reflect the fact that at that time the rise of Anglo- Catholicism and introdUction of the trappings of the Unreformed ChUrch of Rome had caUsed many evangelical lay people to petition for a chUrch where the style of worship woUld continUe to reflect the simplicity of the Book of Common Prayer. In many cases bishops were relUctant to allow new parishes to be carved oUt of the existing ones, and so if we take the case of Jesmond Parish ChUrch in Newcastle it was initially proposed that the new chUrch shoUld be foUnded as a proprietary chapel. Similarly, at the other end of the coUntry, when an evangelical philanthropist desired to endow a chUrch, vicarage and school in the parish of Ware becaUse the incUmbent had adopted Anglo-Catholic practices, the diocesan aUthorities initially sUggested that a proprietary chapel woUld be preferable. -

RUNAWAY WIVES: HUSBAND DESERTION IN MEDIEVAL ENGLAND By Sara Butler Loyola University New Orleans Scholars of the medieval family would generally agree that the lot of the me- dieval wife was not an easy one. Medieval husbands held the upper hand in the power relationship, both legally and socially. Although Lawrence Stone's view of niarried life in the Middle Ages as "brutal and often hostile, with little communication, [and] much wife-beating" has since been called into question, more recent historians have still painted a somewhat unflattering picture.' Ju- dith Bennett writes that "[m]edieval people thought of conjugality as a hierar- chy headed by a husband who not only controlled his wife's financial assets and public behavior, but also freely enforced his will through physical violence."^ Indeed, she argues that wife-beating was "a normal part of marriage."^ Even Bar- bara Hanawalt, who has optimistically described peasant marriage in medieval England as a partnership, still concedes that occasional violence was acceptable and expected in marriage.'' What is more, the rules of coverture, which adhered to the biblical principal of husband and wife as one flesh represented at law by the husband, left a wife economically vulnerable. Because all real and movable property legally belonged to the husband as head of the household, a wife who fell out of favor with her husband might well find herself expelled from the family home, without any resources to fall back on.^ From a modern perspective, mari- tal practices hardly provided any sense of reassurance. At a time when families, more often than individuals, took the lead in spousal selection, and inheritance and status were the chief criteria, strong bonds of affection were not guaranteed. -

Notice of Broken Rites 37Th Annual General Meeting
1 Foreword from The Honourable Mr Frank Field MP Once again it gives me great pleasure to write the foreword for the Broken Rites’ Annual Report. This has been a busy year for Broken Rites with important issues under consideration by the church as a whole, but many have also continued the important work of providing support for individual clergy spouses and partners both at times of crisis but also in the longer term, because the effects of a relationship breakdown are deep and long lasting. We all await the results of consultations about clergy well-being across several denominations, the current focus on the Church of England Clergy Discipline Measure, and the C of E Living in Love and Faith project. It is to be hoped that these will lead to real appreciation of the issues that Broken Rites seeks to highlight, and that conversations will continue which will lead to real action. The wheels of institutions grind exceeding slow, and it is disappointing that we still have not seen the revised Bishops’ Visitors’ guidelines nor any progress on obtaining statistics about clergy marriage breakdown in the C of E. It is a real problem that there is no overview or overall policy on help available to clergy spouses or partners after a relationship breakdown. One of the great values of Broken Rites is that it offers unconditional one- to-one support for those who are experiencing relationship breakdown or difficulty. Each member has something to contribute at some stage along the journey, and I encourage you all to continue. -

318 THE MONTH. 'THE second reading of the Burials Bill was carried, as we expected, by a decisive majority. The Bishop of Lincoln, in -0pposing the Bill, was supported by Viscount Cranbrook in an eloquent speech; but the Archbishops, followed by eight Bishops,1 voted for the second reading. In introducing the Bill in the Upper House, the Government showed a wise discretion. Lord Chancellor Selborne is greatly respected among loyal Church men, particularly, perhaps, among the majority of the clergy ; and his conciliatory speech smoothed the way for a consideration of the Bill, which as it stood was by no means a mere reprint of the Liberationist programme. The clerical relief provisions were welcomed by many Church Reformers as at the least a step in the right direction. In Committee, on the 1 5th, several amendments were proposed. ·The Earl of Mount-Edgcumbe proposed the insertion in line 13, after " place," of the words " where there is no unconsecrated burial-ground or cemetery in which the parishioners or inhabitants have rights of burial." The Lord Chancellor objected that this amendment would draw a line between parish and parish through out the kingdom. In one parish a Nonconformist would be able to avail himself of the provisions of the Act; in an adjoining parish a Nonconformist would not be able to do so. The Archbishop of York, in supporting the amendment, remarked that a line be tween parish and parish already existed. On a division there appeared-Contents, 130; Non-contents, ro6; by a majority of 24, therefore, this important amendment was carried. -

GRANT FUNDING SOURCES for Clergy & their families SOURCES OF GRANT FUNDING WITHIN THE DIOCESE Within the Diocese of Exeter there are a number of trusts available predominantly for the support and relief of clergy and their dependents. These can all be found on the Diocesan website: https://exeter.anglican.org/ministry/ordained-ministry/sources-grant-funding/ The trusts and a brief description of the terms under which they are able to support grant applications are listed below: The Bishop of Exeter’s Clergy Fund For the advancement of religion through the support of licensed clergy and others employed and/or actively engaged in the ministry of the Church of England in Devon. Application forms can be obtained from your Suffragan Bishop, Archdeacon, Rural Dean or directly from the Bishop of Exeter’s office. There are a number of Minor Trusts administered by Exeter Cathedral listed below. Applications are invited from clergy once a year. God’s love is mediated to people at key moments in their lives, the Gospel is spoken, taught and lived, and communities are helped to find their identity. As a Church it is right that we should value highly the commitment of faithful clergy and express our indebtedness to those who, in retirement, exercise a continuing ministry on which at times many parishes depend as well as providing invaluable support for parish clergy not least with cover and support when needed. I am grateful for the work of the Clergy Retirement Officer and Area Clergy Retirement Officers through which we seek to affirm and care for those who have served the Church for many years. I therefore welcome the publication of this Handbook, which contains the kind of practical and financial information, conveniently brought together, which will, I trust, be of real use to retired clergy and those making the transition into retirement. Christmas www.rcacoe.org Newsletter 2020 Registered Charity No. 1172186 from the chair • Advent/Christmas 2020 Dear Friends, One of the problems that the recent lockdown has brought for me is that I have found it increasingly difficult to gain some sort of perspective for the future. All national effort seems, as I write to you now in late November, to be focussed on allowing Christmas celebrations in a few weeks in as much a normal way as possible. Whatever normal might mean! Without wanting to appear too Scrooge-, might not a pared down Christmas be such a bad thing? There is so much materialism and secular celebration of our “Midwinter Fest” that has its entire focus on 25th December as the end of the celebration. For us as Christians it is just the beginning. What will the New Year bring? A country trying to come to terms with a Brexit that no one seems to know what will happen. A promise of mass vaccination at some point over the spring and summer. Well yes, and thank God for the marvellous work that has been done so quickly to find an effective vaccine. But I believe that the nations of the world, our own country, our Church, will surely need to take stock and try to learn from what has happened. There seem to me to be some profound theological questions that should be visited: What does it mean to be human and live in community? What does it mean to ask God to “deliver us from this plague”? Is it possible for governments to be genuinely caring and compassionate towards the people they serve? Which in turn raises the questions of allocation of resources, taxation and priorities… All rather heavy I hear you say. -
