A History of the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania Kristie Bosko Mertz, Ph.D. “…the more I study the history of the Orthodox Church in this land, the more convinced I become that our task here is God’s task, that God Himself helps us.” 1 — St. Patriarch Tikhon, Farewell Address, March 7, 1907 Introduction The history of our archdiocese is inextricably bound to the larger history of Orthodoxy in America. What is now known as the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania began in 1916 with the tonsuring and consecration of Fr. Alexander Dzubay as Bishop Stephen, within the former North American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. His situation, in terms of being an immigrant of Carpatho-Russian ethnicity and a convert to Orthodoxy from the Byzantine Catholic (Greek Catholic) faith, was in no way unique at that time. However, it provides us with a glimpse of the evolving religious landscape and the foundation that was laid for the creation of the archdiocese and for its subsequent development. The Beginning of Orthodoxy in America Orthodoxy in America began in 1794, when Russian missionaries from Valaam Monastery arrived at Kodiak Island in the Aleutian Islands.1 The beginning of Orthodoxy in this country was found mainly in the future state of Alaska (which was a part of Russia) and in California, but very quickly grew up in the industrial areas of the United States such as Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, and West Virginia. The entirety of North America and Canada was one large diocese with very scattered Orthodox communities. -

The student of theology must hear and obey the Lord’s words: Whoever would be first among you must be your slave (Matthew 20:27). Faithful service as a choir director, teacher, deacon, priest, or bishop requires emulation of the Lord and study of His Word. The life of the sn Church through history provides many lessons for Christians of the twenty-first century.To faithfully serve Christ today requires that we study the lives of our fathers in the faith, the per- secutions the Church has endured in the name of Christ, and the triumphs of the truth of the Gospel in the face of great resistance. Martin Paluch The Dean of St Vladimir’s Seminary has been guiding our seminarians through the study of the Church’s his- tory as a lay professor for many years. I am grateful to the Lord that I was able to ordain John Erickson to the Holy Diaconate on the feast of the Three Holy Hierarchs, the patrons of the seminary’s chapel, and to the Holy Priesthood on May 7, 2006. Father John is now called to renewed service to God’s people at the Holy Table. Titus 2:7 "…who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works." Titus 2:14 "Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work." Titus 3:1 "The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works." Titus 3:8 "And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful." Titus 3:14 "One of the problems in the Cretan church is that they had assimilated their ideas about Jesus, the Christian God, to their ideas about their Greek gods…specifically Zeus, their chief god. Cretan people claimed that Zeus was born on their island and they loved to tell stories and mythologies about Zeus's underhanded character. He would seduce women and lie to get his way. So, Paul wants to very clear: the God revealed through Jesus is totally different than Zeus. His basic character are faithfulness and truth. Which means the Christian way of life will be about truth also." Jim Doukas Now that Thanksgiving is here, I would like to share a wonderful article : “One detail that is never mentioned is that in Washington D.C. there can never be a building of greater height than the Washington Monument. ON the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument are displayed two words: Laus Deo. No one can see these words. In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there, and for that matter, probably couldn’t care less. These words have been there for many years; they are 555 feet, 5.125 inches high, perched atop the monument, facing skyward to the Father of our nation., overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of Columbia. Laus Deo! Two seemingly insignificant, unnoticed words. Out of sight and, one might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highest point over what is the most powerful city in the most successful nation in the world. These two Latin words composed of just four syllables and only seven letters mean, very simply “Praise be to God!” In 1888, the monument was inaugurated and opened to the public. It took 25 years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the Father of our nation: Laus Deo “Praise be to God.” From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city, with its division into four major segments. -

Monasticism Session 1 High School Level Ages 13-17 (45-50 minutes) Theme: Who: Monastics Identify monastics Sub-Theme: Monastics are those chosen by God to live a life of prayer, work and community. God calls all of us to serve others. Some of us are called to pray and serve in a special setting. As monasteries are vital and important centers of prayer and service to others, we find people who have chosen to live this life, in closer communion with God. Note: Teachers will need to look over the materials and become familiar with them. Objectives: By the end of this session students should be able to: • Identify a monastic and his or her role in the Church • Define a monk as being a man or woman called to live a Christian life in a special way of prayer, community and service to others • Recognize the attributes of monastics as the foundations of Orthodox Christianity • Write a reaction paragraph about monastics Materials: KWL Chart (attached) • This is a reading strategy used to anticipate about a subject, before reading and/or studying it. Students will use this to set their motivation for reading (also known as anticipatory set). The first 2 columns are labeled KNOW and WANT TO KNOW. These stand for what a student may already know about the subject, and what they would like to know about it. The teacher will have students fill in these first 2 columns about what they know and would like to know about monks and monasteries. Then, as they research and study about them, they may fill in the third column, LEARNED, with what they have learned about monks and monasteries. -

The Typicon of New Skete, first approved by the Lesser Synod on February 1, 1979, and published in 1980 (1st edition, reprinted 1988), is being revised to reflect the new circumstances of the communities. Each of our three monastic houses is equal in voice and governance, and each house has its own prior. Currently the community numbers 19 members in all. The monks have nine members, the nuns have seven members, while the companions number three (a married couple and a widow). Currently there is one novice with the nuns. New Skete lives in the conviction that an authentic and vibrant monasticism is an essential ingredient of healthy Church life. -
