Biography 2002
THE BLACK SORROWS Biography 2002 Joe Camilleri is an Australian legend who has given his life to music. In the mid 80s following the success of his first band, Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons, Joe Camilleri gathered together a group of musician friends and dubbed them The Black Sorrows. The band began playing for the fun of it, recording independent albums and selling them out of the boot of his car. When radio picked up the classic track, 'Mystified',The Black Sorrows really took flight. They signed to CBS and proceeded to release some of Australia's most successful albums including the multi-platinum sellers Hold On To Me, Harley & Rose and The Chosen Ones. Over the past fifteen years, The Black Sorrows have toured Australia more times than anyone can remember, played sell out shows across Europe, won the ARIA for 'Best Band' and sold more than a million albums world-wide. Joe Camilleri's songs have become part of our lives. The Sorrows' string of hits is seemingly endless: Dear Children, Country Girls, Snake Skin Shoes, Harley & Rose, The Chosen Ones, Mystified, Ain't Love The Strangest Thing, Better Times, Never Let Me Go, Chained To The Wheel, Daughters of Glory, Stir It Up, New Craze... and he's certainly not done yet. Look around the world and you have to put Joe in the same company as people like Eric Clapton and Van Morrison - legends, performers whose careers span decades, transcending all styles and fads, performers who are loved for the fact that they're obviously in it for the music. -

A BOOKLET BECAME A BOOK Most songs were recorded live between 2004 and 2010 at various places during the A to Z shows. These usually ran over four nights – each night a different song list as I worked my way alphabetically through around a hundred songs. The idea was to present the songs undressed, in many cases close to how they sounded when they were first written, before being arranged with a band. I imagined a nice chunky booklet to accompany the recordings – some storytelling, notes on the songs and influences, and so on. I started writing a few things down and didn’t stop. Two years later I had a book. To replace the booklet that became a book, I decided to assemble pictures that would tell stories another way. I hope you enjoy them. The text on the following pages comes from How to Make Gravy, published by Penguin. PK, May 2010 I spilled my wine at the bottom of the statue of Colonel Light After Don Dunstan you could drink wine at tables on the pavement, just like they did in Europe Michael, Pedro, Paul, Jon and Steve with Exile on Main Street, 1987 ‘Beautiful Dreamer’, the last song Stephen Foster completed, was published the year of his death. It’s still going strong Steve Connolly came from a line of vaudevillians, writers and communists Behind the bowler’s arm Catherine Kelly, big fine girl. No-one on a mobile phone ever snapped her with her head thrown back and laughing The minor key and falsetto were borrowed from Skip James They always came for Bradman ’cause fortune used to hide in the palm of his hand Fads and fashions came and went but Slim stayed Slim for sixty years I saw Died Pretty a number of times after I moved to Sydney…. -
Burke CV2018
Associate Professor Robert Burke Curriculum vitae 2018 Personal Details Full name: Associate Professor Robert Louis Burke Current position: Convenor of Jazz and Popular Music Department/ Monash University School/ Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music Faculty/Division: Faculty of Arts Correspondence address: 14 Albert St Caulfield North 3161 Email address: [email protected] ABOUT In 2002, Rob Burke instigated, launched and is currently the Convenor of Jazz and Popular Studies at Monash University (Melbourne Australia). Rob recognised an unfulfilled need in Melbourne's jazz academic landscape, established its course curriculum and provided a clear pathway for musicians to develop their proficiency and aptitude for their academic and performance outcomes. His background as a classically educated musician also enables him to traverse many musical genres and he is in a unique position to speak to students and colleagues about their requirements/concerns and provide balanced outcomes. His ongoing research focuses on issues relating to how we respond to improvised jazz: artistically, critically and personally. His work includes studying the processes and outcomes of music participation and music listening. An internationally acclaimed performer and composer, Rob has released 12 CD's under his own name and has composed and performed on a further 300 CD's. His sensitive and balanced perspective has allowed Rob to traverse many different styles and this has, in part, been expressed as collaborative performances with international leaders in classical, jazz and experimental music. His embrace of many genres of music and the clear expression of his diversity in his role as an educator, researcher and performer, has given rise to a vibrant dialect that resonates through his students and also his performances. -
